England stew over Smith match-up at Lord's
Having bewildered bowlers at Edgbaston like a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma, Steve Smith has now entered the minds of England's selectors.
The hosts are under 圧力 to bounce 支援する in the Ashes after Australia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the five-実験(する) series.
That 感情 適用するs to England's batsmen and bowlers but also their selectors, who are 推定する/予想するd to 減少(する) off-spinning allrounder Moeen Ali for the Lord's 実験(する) that starts next Wednesday.
Moeen's 実験(する) 記録,記録的な/記録する with the ball over the past 12 months is sensational, having snared a world-best 48 wickets at 25.27 during that stretch.
But his struggles with the bat against Nathan Lyon in Birmingham, coupled with an underwhelming day-four 成果/努力 with the ball, has left selectors pondering whether to 支援する the 現職の or 促進する left-arm tweaker Jack Leach.
Smith, so 明確に the difference in the series opener, is likely to 影響(力) the final call.
One of the most impressive elements of the batsman's man-of-the-match 業績/成果 was the fashion in which he swung 勢い in the second innings, 得点する/非難する/20ing remarkably 自由に given the match was in the balance.
Moeen failed to create dot-ball 圧力, partly because of his 欠如(する) of 支配(する)/統制する but also Smith's peerless ability to manoeuvre the ball where he wants.
Smith had no obvious 証拠不十分 for England to 的 in the first 実験(する) but there is a school of thought that left-arm 正統派の spinners, like Leach, are his kryptonite.
CricViz 分析 shows Smith's 打率 against left-arm finger spin is 34.9, incredibly modest when compared to his 全体にわたる 実験(する) 普通の/平均(する) of 62.96.
The obvious caveat is that Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath and Indian Ravindra Jadeja have done most of that 損失 on the subcontinent.
But Smith's ill-運命/宿命d 小旅行する of South Africa last year also featured two 解雇/(訴訟の)却下s to Keshav Maharaj and one to part-timer Dean Elgar, both left-arm 正統派の spinners.
The 反対する argument in the 選択 審議 is that Moeen should be better placed to trouble Australia's left-handers, such as Travis 長,率いる.
長,率いる 示唆するd Smith deserved all the credit for getting on 最高の,を越す of Moeen during their 130-run 共同 at Edgbaston.
"I was very lucky to have Steve at the other end. He's one of the best players of spin in the world," 長,率いる said.
"For left-handers it was やめる difficult (直面するing Moeen) throughout the 実験(する).
"I probably didn't have the 計画(する) of going after him.
"Wadey (Matthew Wade) has a 逆転する sweep in the 捕らえる、獲得する and put a lot of 圧力 on him."
長,率いる 賞賛するd Smith's 静めるing 影響(力) at the crease, as much about presence as it is pointers.
"Not a lot was said between us," 長,率いる said.
"Very relaxed ... he's fantastic to bat with. He sucks the 勢い out of the 対立.
"He 明白に takes a bit of 圧力 off myself.
"They are trying to think of some 計画(する)s to him, so I was able to go a little bit under the レーダ."
