Australians think big again on home sizes

Australians are thinking big again when it comes to their home.

An 分析 by 連邦/共和国 安全s shows 11 years ago Australia was building the biggest detached houses in the world.

But over the past seven years homes have become progressively smaller on 普通の/平均(する) and apartments have been embraced, with houses 縮むing to their smallest in 17 years in 2018/19.

But data (売買)手数料,委託(する)/委員会/権限d by CommSec from the Australian Bureau of 統計(学) shows Australia is again building the biggest houses in the world.

The ABS data shows the 普通の/平均(する) new house built in 2019/20 was 235.8 square metres, up 2.9 per cent on the year and the biggest 増加する in 11 years.

In contrast, the 最新の data shows US houses built over 2019 fell for the fourth year, 負かす/撃墜する three per cent to 233.1 square metres.

CommSec 経済学者s Craig James and Ryan Felsman said the 最近の experience with COVID-19 has certainly 原因(となる)d more families to look for bigger homes and 原因(となる)d others to 追加する extra rooms to 存在するing homes.

The pandemic may also lead to greater cohabitation, such as children returning to their family or parents living with their parents.

If more people decide to work from home, this will have 関わりあい/含蓄s for central 商売/仕事 地区s of 資本/首都 cities, 含むing office and 小売 space usage, cafes and restaurants, services such as hairdressers and public 輸送(する) services.

If more 選ぶ for a sea change, this will have 関わりあい/含蓄s for home prices, 住宅 供給(する), and roads, schools and hospitals in outer 郊外s and 地域の areas.

Mr James and Mr Felsman say the 傾向s from COVID-19 are still 現れるing.

"If a ワクチン were to be 設立する in coming days and weeks, then there may be a return to pre-ウイルス 'normalcy'," they said.

"However, it certainly does appear that many いわゆる norms have been challenged and are, or are 存在, 再評価するd."
