When he saw the (人が)群がる of reporters waiting for him at Hong Kong airport, British human 権利s lawyer Michael Vidler knew he had been 権利 to の近くに his 会社/堅い and 逃げる the city.

"Are you afraid of 存在 逮捕(する)d? Are you afraid of Hong Kong's 安全 法律?" 新聞記者/雑誌記者s from プロの/賛成の-Beijing newspapers shouted as they chased him, cameras pointing at his 直面する.

The events that led Vidler to leave the city he had called home for over three 10年間s with just two days' notice are testament to the withering of Hong Kong's once-vibrant civil society -- and the stifling of dissent brought by the 国家の 安全 法律 that Beijing 課すd in 2020.

Vidler decided to shutter his 会社/堅い when it was 選び出す/独身d out in a 国家の 安全 事例/患者 in February.

Two months later, when the 終結 was 発表するd, he was attacked in 明言する/公表する-associated マスコミ and (刑事)被告 of helping デモ参加者/実演宣伝者s who took part in 抱擁する プロの/賛成の-僕主主義 抗議するs that (海,煙などが)飲み込むd Hong Kong three years ago.

Vidler told AFP he never 代表するd any of the 2019 抗議する人s in 法廷,裁判所 and that he was not conta cted by 国家の 安全 police.

Vidler has lived in Hong Kong since 1990, but says the ecosystem for the kind of legal work his firm was famous for no longer exists

But "when I was (刑事)被告 of 存在 an 'anti-中国 黒人/ボイコット 手渡す', I had seen how that had worked out for people", he said. "That's why I left."

He is not the first to make that 計算/見積り.

The scenes at the airport were almost 同一の to those in 早期に March when Paul Harris, another British 権利s lawyer and former chairman of Hong Kong's 妨げる/法廷,弁護士業 協会, 長,率いるd 速く for a night flight just hours after a long conversation with 国家の 安全 police.

Harris too was labelled "anti-中国" and a "favourite lawyer of the 黒人/ボイコット-覆う? 暴力/激しさ" -- a pejorative 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 for the 2019 demonstrations.

"You only need to have a look at the way 権利s lawyers have been dealt with in 本土/大陸 中国 to know where the 勝利,勝つd is blowing and I believe those 冷淡な 勝利,勝つd have arrived in Hong Kong," Vidler said.

In April he boarded a one-way flight out of the city and his 会社/堅い, Vidler & Co. Solicitors, 公式に 中止するd to operate on Friday.

Hong Kong 直面するs scrutiny over whether its 合法的な system can 持続する its independence as 中国 割れ目s 負かす/撃墜する on dissent with the 安全 法律.

In March, two of Britain's most 上級の 裁判官s pulled out of sitting on Hong Kong's 最高の,を越す 法廷,裁判所, 特記する/引用するing the 法律's 衝撃 on freedoms, though nine other foreign 裁判官s said they would stay.

Vidler's 決定/判定勝ち(する) to shut his practice after 19 years was taken as he felt "it was no longer possible for me to 行為/行う the sort of work that I had 始める,決める up the 会社/堅い to do".

The company was known for judicial reviews that skewered 政府 政策s on 憲法の 実験(する)s, 範囲ing from human trafficking and 性の 暴力/激しさ to LGBTQ 権利s and country park 開発.

And some of their 2019 抗議する 事例/患者s attracted the 当局' wrath.

They defended Veby Indah, an Indonesian 新聞記者/雑誌記者 who was 発射 in her 権利 注目する,もくろむ by a police 発射物, and 代表するd "Ms X", a woman 恐らく 強姦d by officers at a police 駅/配置する.

Chris 強い味, then police 長,指導者 and now Hong Kong's 安全 大臣, 率直に (刑事)被告 Ms X of giving a 誤った 声明 and put her 指名する on the 手配中の,お尋ね者 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる).

But Vidler said it was after the 安全 法律 took 影響 that the 会社/堅い's space to operate 崩壊(する)d, with people no longer willing to come 今後, NGOs 解散させるing or 身を引くing, and political 対立 大部分は wiped out.

"Any 批評 of the 政府 appears to be 述べるd as a 国家の 安全 offence or sedition," Vidler said.

"Hong Kong, I've felt over the last two years, is 率直に a place I don't recognise anymore," he 追加するd. "Civil society has all but disappeared."

- '深く,強烈に troubling' -

The last straw for Vidler & Co. (機の)カム when Stanley Chan, a fiery 安全 裁判官, 指名するd the company six times in a 裁判/判断 罪人/有罪を宣告するing four 抗議する人s of unlawful 議会 and 所有/入手 of 不快な/攻撃 武器s.

Chan said the 会社/堅い's phone number was on some "合法的な 援助 資源s" cards 設立する on the 被告s, and that the cards "反映するd a sense of organisation behind the 出来事/事件s".

"I would not comment whether these individuals, 会・原則s or companies... are 伴う/関わるd in accessorial or inchoate 義務/負債," Chan wrote.

The "深く,強烈に troubling" 合法的な 分析 sent a 冷気/寒がらせる 負かす/撃墜する Vidler's spine, who 解釈する/通訳するd it as a "call to 活動/戦闘 for the 国家の 安全 police".

"I thought it was really only a 事柄 of time before I became the 支配する of an 調査," he said.

When the 終結's 告示 誘発するd the 圧力(をかける) attacks, he decided to leave straight away.

Vidler said he had been 圧倒するd by messages of support since he left, 含むing some from former and 現在の members of the city's 司法の.

"I feel 衝突d leaving," he said. "But wiser people than me said I made the 権利 決定/判定勝ち(する)."
