Off the wagon: Vietnam's binge-drinking problem

A scantily 覆う? DJ gyrates to ear-splitting music as the (人が)群がる of drinkers orders more towers of lager: welcome to The Hangover, one of a new 刈る of 'beer clubs' raising 関心s about Vietnam's drinking culture.

Beer goes for as little as 30 US cents a glass in Vietnam, making the 共産主義者 country one of the cheapest places in the world for a tipple. And over the last few years, alcohol 消費 has been rising at one of the fastest 率s anywhere.

Vietnamese used to おもに enjoy their booze perched on the small plastic 議長,司会を務めるs that festoon curbside beer 共同のs.

But 増加するing wealth has brought new drinking 選択s to a country that has no real notion of alcoholism and no 明確な/細部 word for a hangover.

妨げる/法廷,弁護士業s are still おもに the 保存する of 井戸/弁護士席-heeled 国外追放/海外移住s and the Vietnamese エリート. So beer clubs -- with their music and 空気/公表する-条件ing -- have sprung up over 最近の months as funkier 代案/選択肢s for young, 地元の drinkers, many of them committed to the 原因(となる).

"The 目的 of drinking is to get drunk. It will be a waste if you are not drunk," 21-year-old Vo 先頭 Bao told AFP outside The Hangover, where he had come on a 最近の Thursday evening with friends.

"I want my people, my (弁護士の)依頼人s, to come into my club and have a little food, have a little beer, have a little fun and go home," he said.

Vietnam is the third-largest beer 消費者 in Asia, behind Japan and 中国, and the 主要な 消費者 in Southeast Asia, out-drinking even wealthier Thailand, によれば 産業 人物/姿/数字s.

The 率 of beer drinking in Vietnam has 増加するd by more than 200 パーセント over the past 10 years, 明言する/公表する マスコミ recently 報告(する)/憶測d, 予定 in part to rising 使い捨てできる incomes and to demographics -- a million people reach the 合法的な drinking age of 18 each year.

- Trouble brewing -

For now Vietnam barely makes it into the world's 最高の,を越す 100 per capita alcohol 消費者s, によれば World Health Organization 統計(学), far behind big-drinking Russia, Britain and フラン.

But the 統計(学) are skewed because より小数の than two パーセント of Vietnamese women drink alcohol at all, によれば 世界保健機構 technical officer Phuong Nam Nguyen.

That lea ves it to the men, one-4半期/4分の1 of whom drink at "harmful" levels -- defined as six or more drinks per 開会/開廷/会期, 世界保健機構 研究 示すs.

"It is becoming a serious health challenge in Vietnam," Phuong told AFP.

"There are many associated problems -- 肝臓 cirrhosis, road 交通事故s, 国内の 暴力/激しさ."

Sixty パーセント of 国内の 暴力/激しさ 出来事/事件s in Vietnam are linked to alcohol, 政府 研究 shows, and 過度の alcohol 消費 is resulting in rising 出来事/事件s of 病気s such as 癌 and 糖尿病.

成果/努力s to 制限する 消費 -- from a 提案するd 10:00 pm alcohol sales 禁止(する) to 計画(する)s to 限界 beer sales to 空気/公表する-条件d 発生地s -- have been 広範囲にわたって mocked in the 明言する/公表する-run 圧力(をかける) and 速く abandoned.

明言する/公表する マスコミ 報告(する)/憶測s say drinkers in Hanoi alone are 推定する/予想するd to 負かす/撃墜する nearly 200 million litres of alcohol for the 来たるべき Tet lunar new year festival.

It is all part of Vietnam's 強健な drinking culture -- one 地元の 説 宣言するs: 'A man without alcohol is like a 旗 without 勝利,勝つd.'

"This (idea) is 深く,強烈に rooted in our culture and will take a long time to change," said 世界保健機構's Phuong.

- What's your 毒(薬)? -

Beer is 特に big 商売/仕事 in Vietnam, which 消費するs around three billion litres 毎年.

The market is 支配するd by three companies and every major town has its own brew -- from Beer Saigon in southern 売春婦 Chi Minh City, to Beer La Rue in the central areas, to Hanoi beer in the northern 資本/首都.

International drinks 巨大(な)s are hoping to 説得する Vietnam's beer drinkers to move の上に harder アルコール飲料s, にもかかわらず h eavy 税金s and a 禁止(する) on advertising spirits.

With a 全住民 of some 90 million, half of whom are under 30, and a 速く 拡大するing middle class, Vietnam is a 重要な market for companies such as Diageo, which produces Johnnie Walker whisky の中で other brands.

The company says 消費 is not 現実に that high, with Vietnamese drinking いっそう少なく than the French per capita, but the country remains an enticing 商売/仕事 prospect.

"There is a 偽の perception that Vietnam is drinking too much, it isn't true," said Stephane Gripon, general 経営者/支配人 for Diageo in Vietnam.

"They drink in a reasonable way and their 消費 of spirits is... still very low," he 追加するd.

That is not always the 事例/患者 for Vietnam's beer boys.

On a 最近の Wednesday lunchtime in the 資本/首都 Hanoi, 42-year-old construction engineer Nguyen 先頭 Thanh sat with a friend drinking at a bia hoi -- a 道端 restaurant serving fresh-brewed beer. Around 10 empty beer 瓶/封じ込めるs were on the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する.

"I drink every day, beer or spirits. I know it is not good for my health, but it's hard to give up this habit," he told AFP.

"いつかs, I can do 商売/仕事 only if we've drunk together. It's also hard to say no when you're 招待するd to drink -- we say 'no alcohol, no party'."
