'City that never sleeps' wants to dial 負かす／撃墜する the 容積／容量
New York is known as "The City That Never Sleeps"
Car horns, サイレン／魅惑的なs, 演習ing, jet overflights and restaurants where diners have to yell to be heard -- New York is one of the loudest cities in the world.
But America's most populous metropolis, known as "The City That Never Sleeps," has 開始する，打ち上げるd a unique 実験 捜し出すing to 供給する New York with the 科学（工学）技術 to dial 負かす／撃墜する the 容積／容量 and 演説（する）／住所 noise 汚染.
The five-year, $4.6 million 事業／計画（する） -- the brainchild of 研究員s at New York University, working in concert with city 居住（者）s and city hall -- is using machine learning 科学（工学）技術 and sensors to build a sound library.
The idea is to 記録，記録的な／記録する the 十分な panoply of noises in the city of 8.5 million 居住（者）s and use 人工的な 知能 so that machines can 認める sounds automatically, 最終的に giving 当局 a way to mitigate noise levels.
"It is like living in the middle of a サッカー stadium いつかs," says Gregory Orr, a filmmaker from Los Angeles who has lived in New York for 19 years.
"Even the squirrels have to chirp louder in the city ーするために be heard over the din," he jokes.

研究員s 任命する／導入するd the first sensor boxes, which 送信する／伝染させる data through wifi, on New York University buildings in Greenwich Village.
They're now 任命する／導入するing sensors across Manhattan and Brooklyn at 位置／汚点／見つけ出すs selected for their diverse sounds. By the end of the year, there should be 100 in place.
"There are plenty of 熟考する／考慮するs that show that noise has a tremendous 衝撃 on health, both short-称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語 and long-称する，呼ぶ／期間／用語," says Bello, 特記する／引用するing heart 条件s, 審理，公聴会 loss and hypertension, which then have a 重要な 経済的な 衝撃.

In Manhattan, Bello says the 影響s are amplified by 超高層ビルs, which form "canyons of sound" and make everything louder.
"A lot of the sounds that you get in New York would not be so loud in other places, because of the 明確な／細部s of the topology of the city," he tells AFP.

The sensors are programmed to 記録，記録的な／記録する no more than 10 連続した seconds to 避ける eavesdropping on 自然保護s and 提起する／ポーズをとるing confidentiality problems.
研究員s hope to 索引 thousands of sounds which, with the help of New Yorkers, will be carefully annotated and help computers identify the source of nuisance sound すぐに.
It would then be over to the city to do what it can to 限界 it.
The problem is （疑いを）晴らす. But the 解答s might still be some way off.
How, for example, do you を取り引きする something as short-lived and 予測できない as honking?
"We have to get more creative," says Bello.
Today, it can take 当局 five or six days to を取り引きする a noise （民事の）告訴, and 要求するs the 介入 of one of 50 specialist 視察官s, says Bello. After so long, the problem has often disappeared.

Arline Bronzaft, 環境の psychologist and professor emerita at City University of New York, has spent years speaking out about the harmful 影響s of noise and need for better 支配（する）／統制するs.

Delighted that the proje ct is taking place, she says noise levels 影響する／感情 how New Yorkers behave.
"Some of the 推論する／理由 people walk 急速な／放蕩な is to get away from the noise and New Yorkers talk loud because we are competing with sounds," she tells AFP.
For a long time, 公式の／役人s 最小限に減らすd the consequences of noise 汚染, 告発する／非難するing people of 誇張するing -- a bit like how the タバコ 産業 spent １０年間s 辞退するing to 認める the 危険s of smoking on your health.
But today she credits 当局 with 存在 "cognizant of the problem."
The first results gathered by Bello's team tend to 確認する that the problem is under-報告（する）／憶測d, that there are more noise 違反s than the 311 スピードを出す／記録につける seems to 示唆する, at least for sounds linked to construction.
New York may not be the only loud city in the world, but Bello calls it "a perfect 研究室／実験室" to 実験（する） 解答s that can be 可決する・採択するd and transferred "to many other places in the US and around the world."
"That's 最終的に the 客観的な," he says. "We will 生成する a 核心 始める，決める of 科学（工学）技術s that can be 適用するd to this problem anywhere."
