In Damascus, rare glass blowers 捜し出す to keep (手先の)技術 alive

"The pieces we work on have soul," he told AFP inside his modest workshop, 解任するing the machines that have today 取って代わるd the millennia-old (手先の)技術.

"We have to sort through the broken glass, put it in the furnace, take it out, blow into the molten glass, 形態/調整 it up, and decorate it," he said.

Mohammed and his two brothers, Mustafa and Khaled, learnt the secrets of the (手先の)技術 from their father, who 相続するd the 技術s from his own father.

But Mohammed has not managed to pass on the 貿易(する) to his own children.

"They didn't want to learn the profession as it's not financially viable," he said, pausing from 絵 an intricate white pattern on a dark blue glass ornament.

Mohammed says (弁護士の)依頼人s have become rare since war 爆発するd in his country in 2011, keeping tourists away from the covered alleyways and markets of old Damascus.

"Hardly anyone buys handmade glass anymore -- just some 大使館 従業員s, hotels and restaurants," he said.

Fuad Arbash, the 長,率いる of Syria's oriental (手先の)技術 professions 協会, said glass blowing had been around in Syria for centuries.

Phoenicians are believed to have invented the art more than 2,000 years ago on what is today the coast of 隣人ing Lebanon.
