孤児d rhinos find 安全な 避難 in S.Africa 聖域
Four staff and two volunteers work around the clock to care for the rhino calves, いつかs even sleeping next to the youngest in an open 直面するd barn
Rhinoceros calf "Jessie" was just four-months-old when she arrived at a 避難所 in northern South Africa, bleeding from a 削減（する） to the shoulder and 深く，強烈に traumatised.
救助者s 嫌疑者，容疑者／疑う the animal was 負傷させるd by poachers who took out its mother, hitting the calf with a machete to keep it away.
Jessie was lucky to escape alive and land in a unique centre 充てるd to rehabilitating rhino 孤児s.
"It took two days of giving her Valium for her to 静める 負かす／撃墜する," carer Zanre 先頭 Jaarsveld 解任するd.
"She was very dehydrated too."
The Rhino Orphanage is tucked away in the lush forests of South Africa's Limpopo 州, hidden at the end of a red-dirt 跡をつける dotted with potholes.
Mischievous monkeys dart across the road as a tower of giraffe galop away elegantly in the distance.
A large metal gate guards the 入り口 to the centre -- surrounded by several dozen game reserves at an 公表されていない 場所.
"If farm 労働者s give （警察などへの）密告，告訴（状） to poachers... they will make more money than they would make in a year's 給料," said 創立者 Arrie 先頭 Deventer.
安全 and vigilance are therefore 重要な to 保護するing the orphanage, which 生き残るs on 私的な 寄付s.
- 'We're their mothers' -
先頭 Deventer, a former history teacher turned game 子孫を作る人, started the 事業／計画（する） after he was called to help with a poaching 出来事/事件 in 2011.
Two white rhino 女性（の）s had been 設立する dead in the area, 推定では killed for their horns.
One of their two calves was still alive and needed a new home.
先頭 Deventer, 67, made several enquiries to no avail.
The only 選択s for the traumatised calf, he said, were tourist 施設s where it would be pestered by 訪問者s.
"I 設立する out there was nothing, nowhere 倫理的な," 先頭 Deventer 解任するd. "Then I heard myself 説 over the phone: I'll build one."
Today the orphanage is home to a number of rhino calves. Most are of the square-lipped 種類, also known as white rhino, but some of the rarer 批判的に 危うくするd 黒人／ボイコット rhino are also housed there.
The 使節団 is （疑いを）晴らす: 救助（する）, rehabilitation and 解放（する）. No tourists 許すd, very few 訪問者s and 極小の human 接触する.

"If they get too accustomed to people it makes it more difficult to 解放（する） them into the wild," 先頭 Deventer explained, 追加するing that the grounds were also の近くにd to the public for "安全 推論する／理由s".

"We're their mothers," said 経営者／支配人 Yolande 先頭 Der Merwe, 38. "They sleep very の近くに for warmth and 慰安.
"Someone brings (us) food, or if we want to take a dinner or a bathroom break someone comes to stay with them," she told AFP.
"As soon as they are left alone they start 叫び声をあげるing."
Their cries are high-pitched, something like the sound of a イルカ, によれば 先頭 Deventer.

Most of the calves have been 孤児d by poachers.
Rhinos are killed for their horns, 高度に prized across Asia for 伝統的な and medicinal 目的s.

One kilogramme of the keratin, 得るd from their horns, can sell for over $110,000 (90,000 euros) on the 黒人／ボイコット market.
The 貿易（する） is lucrative and thousands of rhinos have been poached in South Africa over the past １０年間 as a result.
At the orphanage, the three youngest 居住（者）s -- two 女性（の）s and a male -- impatiently wait for large baby 瓶／封じ込めるs brimming with a mix of milk and boiled rice.
Rhinos 伸び（る） over 350 kilogrammes in their first year of life and calves need to 料金d every few hours.
"At five or seven days old they are tiny, 膝-high," gestured 先頭 Der Merwe. "They 伸び（る） a キロ a day at least."
By their first birthday, rhinos 一般に 重さを計る の近くに to half a tonne.
As the calves grow restless, 先頭 Jaarsveld, 26, affectionately scratches their 厚い leathery 肌.
"It's の近くに to milk, now they are getting cranky," she chuckled.
の中で them is Jessie, still skittish eight months after her 救助（する）.
"She's very jumpy," said 先頭 Jaarsveld. "She gets 脅すd very easily."
Calves stay at the orphanage until the age of five, when they are みなすd strong enough to defend themselves from predators.
They are then 解放（する）d in a nearby game reserve where a conservationist keeps the orphanage updated on their 進歩.
