Most people in US 好意 Afghan 同盟(する) 難民s: AP-NORC 投票

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most people in the U.S. want to see Afghans who worked with Americans 申し込む/申し出d resettlement in the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs, a new 投票 shows, 確認するing support across political divides for former 軍の 翻訳家s and others struggling to escape Taliban 支配する.

The 調査する from The Associated 圧力(をかける)-NORC 中心 for Public 事件/事情/状勢s 研究 finds 72% of Americans say they 好意 the U.S. 認めるing 難民 status to people who worked with the U.S. or Afghan 政府s during the war in Afghanistan, if they pass 安全 checks.

For 公式の/役人s of 難民 resettlement groups, 退役軍人s and others working to get Afghan 同盟(する)s on 計画(する)s out of Afghanistan, the 投票 findings 耐える out what they are seeing on the ground: Large numbers of Americans regard giving the Afghans a 避難 from any Taliban 報復 as a 義務 and a necessary coda of the nearly 20-year war.

Patrick Raglow, a 地元の カトリック教徒 Charities (n)役員/(a)執行力のある director in Oklahoma City 準備するing for at least 1,800 Afghan 難民s in the 明言する/公表する, said he is fielding hundreds of community 申し込む/申し出s of help and support for the Afghan 移民,移住(する)s.

Oklahoma 農業者s and ranchers have even volunteered to 寄付する a few acres for the Afghan families to homestead, Raglow said.

"I see this very much as a 延長/続編 of the 使節団 of those 勇敢に立ち向かう 13 Americans who gave their lives, 保護するing and 避難所ing and bringing to safety these very people," Raglow said of the resettlement, invoking the U.S. service members killed when a 自殺 爆撃機 的d the U.S.-run 避難/引き上げ at Kabul´s airport on Aug. 26, an attack that also killed 169 Afghans. "It is a way to continue that 使節団."

Matt Zeller, an Afghanistan war 退役軍人 and 創立者 of the 退役軍人s group No One Left Behind, said he has also seen 普及した support for Afghan 難民s.

"I don´t think there´s any more 統一するd 問題/発行する that the American public has had since 9/11," said Zeller, whose group is part of a civil society 成果/努力 encompassing 退役軍人s, 自由主義の suburbanites and hardcore 保守的なs, Democratic and 共和国の/共和党の 国会議員s and others that has 動員するd to get more at-危険 Afghans out of the Taliban-held country.

Zeller and others are 失望させるd that U.S. airlifts and その後の 私的な flights - handicapped by the Taliban and by U.S. 官僚主義 - have 避難させるd only a fraction of the thousands of Afghans 潜在的に 適格の for special 移民,移住(する) ビザs.

In a time of sharp political divide, about three-4半期/4分の1s of both 共和国の/共和党のs and 民主党員s support 認めるing 難民 status to Afghans who worked with the U.S. or Afghan 政府s. 全体にわたる, just 9% of Americans say they are …に反対するd.

"We 借りがある it to them," said Andrew Davis, a 62-year-old 共和国の/共和党の and Army 退役軍人 in Galloway, Ohio. "It´d be dangerous for them to stay there, I think, if they helped us."

More 好意 than …に反対する the U.S. taking in other Afghans if they pass 安全 checks, the 調査する showed. Still, より小数の than half, 42%, support that 部類 of 難民s, while 26% are …に反対するd. An 付加 31% say they're neither in 好意 nor …に反対するd.

More 民主党員s than 共和国の/共和党のs support 難民 status for others who 恐れる living in the Taliban-支配するd country, 57% to 27%. Twenty パーセント of 民主党員s are …に反対するd, while 23% are neither in 好意 nor …に反対するd. の中で 共和国の/共和党のs, 38% are …に反対するd and 35% 持つ/拘留する neither opinion.

Davis said he supported 受託するing former Afghan 従業員s of the U.S. or Afghan 政府s and was open to doing the same for other Afghans who felt in danger from the Taliban. But he 強調する/ストレスd the importance of 安全 vetting for all Afghan 難民s to 審査する out any 安全 危険s.

"If we can do that ... I do think we should take them in," he said. "I mean, they´re 明白に at 脅し."

法案 Cronin, a 74-year-old retiree and 共和国の/共和党の in the San Francisco Bay ar ea, said he supported helping Afghan interpreters and others who went out of their way to 援助(する) American service members and 非軍事のs.

While he spoke with 狼狽 of 移民/移住 across the U.S.-Mexico 国境, he made (疑いを)晴らす he put former Afghan 同僚s of Americans in a special 部類.

"Those people stuck their neck out knowing, or maybe not knowing, that they could be killed by the Taliban," Cronin said. "So why would you not want to take care of those people?"

Lauren Schulman, a 63-year-old bookstore 労働者 and 民主党員 in Florida who said she 堅固に 認可するs of 認めるing the special 移民,移住(する) ビザs, said the knowledge that only a small number of desperate Afghan 同盟(する)s has escaped Taliban 支配する so far makes their 苦境 all the more 説得力のある.

Americans have "been watching them for days and weeks now - trying to get out," Schulman said.
