Support flows to 'changed' Texas synagogue after 引き分け

DALLAS (AP) - The tight-knit congregation at a Texas synagogue where four people were held 人質 by an 武装した captor during a 10-hour 引き分け over the 週末 traces its roots 支援する to a 集会 組織するd over 20 years ago by a handful of families who were new to the area.

"It was a ユダヤ人の holiday and we were just feeling 肉親,親類d of 孤立するd and 自信のない who else was living here that was ユダヤ人の," Anna Salton Eisen, a 創立者 and former 大統領,/社長 of Congregation Beth イスラエル, said Sunday.

Since that start in 1998, the congregation in the Fort 価値(がある) 郊外 of Colleyville has grown to about 140 families, built its own synagogue and 雇うd a rabbi known throughout the area for building 橋(渡しをする)s with other 約束s.

Eisen said she has been bowled over by the intensity of the support the congregants have gotten during the 人質 ordeal, but that she also has gotten a "painful awakening" that "our history is now going to be changed."

Eisen, who 公式文書,認めるd 安全 at their synagogue has been taken "very 本気で, very 本気で" for a long time, said a message of support from a member the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 worshippers were killed in a 2018 attack, made her realize "this is part of who we are and how we move 今後 and 答える/応じる to this is something we have to think about."

Rabbi Jeffrey Myers of Tree of Life, who 生き残るd the 大虐殺 there, America´s deadliest antisemitic attack, said in a 声明 that と一緒に the 救済 that the Texas 人質s were 安全な, "my heart is 激しい."

"While everyone is 肉体的に 安全な, they are also forever changed," Myers said. "My own community knows too 井戸/弁護士席 the 苦痛, 外傷/ショック and lost sense of 安全 that comes when 暴力/激しさ 軍隊s its way in, 特に into our sacred spaces."

The 引き分け in Texas ended around 9 p.m. Saturday when the last three 人質s, who 含むd Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, escaped from the 銃器携帯者/殺しや and an 連邦検察局 SWAT team 急ぐd in. The captor, Malik Faisal Akram, 44, was killed. A fourth 人質 was 解放(する)d earlier.

Cytron-Walker told "CBS Mornings" that he threw a 議長,司会を務める at his captor and they 急ぐd out. He credited past 安全 training for getting them out 安全に.< /p>

Cytron-Walker said returning to the synagogue "won´t やむを得ず be an 平易な thing but it´s a really important thing."

At a service held Monday evening at a nearby Methodist church, Cytron-Walker said the 量 of "井戸/弁護士席-wishes and 親切 and compassion" has been been 圧倒的な.

"While very few of us are doing 承認する 権利 now, we´ll get through this," he said.

Andrew Marc Paley, a Dallas rabbi who was called to the scene to help families and 人質s upon their 解放(する), said that by all accounts, Cytron-Walker was a 静める and 慰安ing presence during the ordeal.

"He made every 成果/努力 to those who were with him to sort of remain 静める and to, you know, diffuse the 状況/情勢 to the best they can," he said.

Jawaid Alam, 大統領,/社長 of the Islamic 中心 of Southlake, told the Fort 価値(がある) 星/主役にする-電報電信 that Cytron-Walker is a personal friend who has 促進するd peace and 協調 across 約束s.

"He is a peace-loving person, a Rabbi and ユダヤ人の leader, but a true friend of the イスラム教徒 community," Alam said.

The rabbi at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the synagogue in East Lansing, Michigan, that Cytron-Walker …に出席するd while growing up said in a message to congregants there that she was with his mother on Saturday as the ordeal 広げるd.

Rabbi Amy Bigman wrote in the message that while it was difficult to see another instance of antisemitism, they have taken 慰安 in the outpouring of "祈りs and good wishes." She wrote that while she knew the events in Texas "raised our sense of alarm," she hoped her congregants would not stay away and 公式文書,認めるd 安全 had been "大いに 増加するd" over the years.

Halie Soifer, CEO of the ユダヤ人の Democratic 会議 of America, also grew up …に出席するing Congregation Shaarey Zedek and remembered Cytron-Walker's leadership as a student in the 青年 group.

"From everything I can tell, he´s very 類似の today to what he was like then, which is someone who is driven by a sense of 深く,強烈に rooted ユダヤ人の values and activism and belief that we´re all equal and 成果/努力s to build 関係 and care for others," Soifer said.

Cytron-Walker has been the Texas synagogue's first 十分な-time rabbi since 2006. The synagogue's website says the married father of two loves welcoming everyone from "interfaith families to LGBT individuals and families to those 捜し出すing to find a spiritual home in Judaism, along with all others."

"We have newcomers, we have people who have been here a longtime and have seen each other´s children grow up and have been together through all the ups and 負かす/撃墜するs - the joys and hardships of life," Eisen said. "We´re tight-knit, we´re not a very large congregation."

Eisen said she knew they were welcome in the community, but didn't やめる realize how much until the outpouring (機の)カム as the ordeal 広げるd.

"Now I really feel welcome here. It was a life-changing thing," she said.

Eisen, who has been 用心深い about going out during the pandemic to 保護する her mother, a 大破壊/大虐殺 生存者 who turns 100 on Saturday, said she started watching the Facebook livestream of the 人質-taking during the services when 警報d by another member.

"It felt impossible to watch and impossible not to watch," she said.

It was 特に hard, she said, to tell her mother what had happened. "It was so difficult for me, because she thought this can´t happen here," Eisen said.
