Trump's 賞賛する of Putin, 'America First' 見解(をとる) 実験(する)d by war

WASHINGTON (AP) - From the earliest days of his first 大統領の (選挙などの)運動をする, Donald Trump 積極性 challenged the 中心存在s of 共和国の/共和党の 外交政策 that defined the party since World War II.

He mocked John McCain's 逮捕(する) during the Vietnam War, 実証するd autocrats with his platitudes, questioned longtime 軍の and 安全 同盟s and embraced an isolationist worldview. And to the horror of many GOP leaders at the time, it worked, resonating with 投票者s who believed, in part, that a bipartisan 設立 in Washington had 仲買人d 貿易(する) 取引,協定s that 傷つける American 労働者s and recklessly つまずくd into いわゆる "forever wars."

But Russia's 残虐な 侵略 of ウクライナ共和国 is 提起する/ポーズをとるing a serious 実験(する) for Trump and his "America First" doctrine at a moment when he is 注目する,もくろむing another 大統領の run and using this year's midterm 選挙s to keep bending the GOP to his will. He's 大部分は alone in his 支えるd 賞賛する of ロシアの 大統領 Vladimir Putin as "smart," an 査定/評価 he 繰り返し言うd last week during speeches to 寄贈者s and 保守的な 行動主義者s. His often deferential 副/悪徳行為 大統領,/社長, マイク Pence, 分裂(する) with him on the 問題/発行する late Friday.

The 多国籍の 共同s that Trump 繰り返して 土台を崩すd, 一方/合間, have 許すd the West to quickly 禁止(する)d together to hobble Russia's economy with 連係させた 許可/制裁s. The 北大西洋条約機構 同盟, which Trump once 解任するd as "obsolete," is flexing its strength as a 失敗させる/負かす to Russia's 侵略.

Perhaps most fundamentally, the war is a fresh 思い出の品, 観察者/傍聴者s say, that the U.S. can't 簡単に ignore the world's problems, even if that's いつかs a 政治上 控訴,上告ing way to connect with 投票者s 直面するing their own daily struggles.

"This is a 残虐な wake-up call to both parties that not only are we not going to be able to do いっそう少なく in the world," said Richard Haass, the 大統領,/社長 of the 会議 on Foreign Relations and a former 外交官. "We are going to have to do more."

While he argued that large elements of both parties have 論証するd a 願望(する) to turn inward, the 現在の 状況/情勢 提起する/ポーズをとるs a "special problem" for R epublicans and the "America firsters" who have 以前 tried to paint Russia has a benign actor.

"The entire thrust of America First, I would argue, was misguided in a world where what happens anywhere can and will 影響する/感情 us," he said.

It's 不明瞭な whether the Western まとまり that has taken 持つ/拘留する against Russia can be 支えるd if the war 増大するs, 拡大するs beyond ウクライナ共和国 or drags on 無期限に/不明確に. And after two 10年間s of U.S. 外交政策 失敗s, 含むing the Iraq War and the botched 撤退 from Afghanistan, many Americans are approaching the moment with 警告を与える.

On the eve of Russia's 侵略, just 26% of Americans said they supported the U.S. playing a major 役割 in the 衝突, によれば a 投票 from The Associated 圧力(をかける)-NORC 中心 for Public 事件/事情/状勢s 研究.

But the challenges to Trump's approach to the world are (疑いを)晴らす.

Sweden and Finland have abandoned their long-held 中立 and warmed to the idea of joining 北大西洋条約機構, 拡大するing an 同盟 Trump continued to 非難する this week. Germany, a country Trump spent years trying to browbeat into spending more on its 弁護, broke its 長年の 地位,任命する-World War II 政策 by sending anti-戦車/タンク 武器s and surface-to-空気/公表する ミサイルs to ウクライナ共和国 and 誓約(する)ing to 劇的な 増加する its 弁護 予算.

Trump and his 同盟(する)s 主張する that Russia would never have 侵略するd ウクライナ共和国 were he still 大統領,/社長. And Russia did not make 積極的な moves on his watch, something former 補佐官s and others credit to his erratic 行為 and direct 脅しs that left world leaders uncertain of how Trump would 答える/応じる to a 誘発.

Roger Zakheim, the Washington director of the Ronald Reagan 大統領の 創立/基礎 and 学校/設ける, credited Trump for deterring Putin, who he said had "実証するd the need for 同盟(する)s to 投資する more in their 安全 and 弁護."

"I think 大統領 Trump, at least at it 関係のある to ウクライナ共和国, was able to 阻止する Vladimir Putin. And that was a 機能(する)/行事 of 予測できなく, which is 価値のある to 阻止する (犯罪の)一味 an autocrat like Vladimir Putin," he said. Still, he argued Putin´s 活動/戦闘s had been "so 積極的な and so brazen and so immoral" that it had "de-強調するd the difference" between さまざまな 外交政策 approaches.

Still, the war 新たにするs 焦点(を合わせる) on the 議論の的になる 役割 ウクライナ共和国 played during Trump's 任期, 特に the way the then-大統領,/社長 used 弁護 of the struggling country as a 取引ing 道具 to 改善する his 国内の political standing.

Trump was 弾こうするd for the first time for trying to 圧力 ウクライナ共和国 to 調査/捜査する his 2020 Democratic 対抗者, Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter Biden. The 成果/努力 含むd 持つ/拘留するing up nearly $400 million in U.S. 安全 援助(する) to ウクライナ共和国 and てこ入れ/借入資本ing an Oval Office visit that Ukrainian 大統領 Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been requesting.

Trump also 押し進めるd discredited (人命などを)奪う,主張するs that ウクライナ共和国, not Russia, had meddled in the 2016 選挙, 繰り返して 味方するing with Putin over his own 国家の 知能 機関s.

"Putin is the 批判的な スパイ/執行官, but certainly Trump 与える/捧げるd to it with his 計画/陰謀 支援する then and continued to 与える/捧げる it by 土台を崩すing 国家の 安全," said retired U.S. Army 中尉/大尉/警部補 陸軍大佐 Alexander Vindman, the former 国家の 安全 会議 whistleblower who raised alarms about Trump's 圧力 策略. "最終的に the 大統領,/社長 土台を崩すd U.S. 外交政策 because he 弱めるd ウクライナ共和国."

As he 目的(とする)s to play a 重要な 役割 in this year´s midterms and 潜在的に run for 大統領,/社長 again in 2024, Trump has shown little 利益/興味 in calibrating his approach to Putin.

Former 国務長官 マイク Pompeo, who has been laying the 基礎 for his own 可能性のある 大統領の run, has 大部分は abandoned the language he was 非難するd for using before the 侵略, when had called Putin "very 有能な" and said he had "enormous 尊敬(する)・点 for him." Even Tucker Carlson, the popular Fox News host who had 率直に questioned why he shouldn´t 味方する with Russia over ウクライナ共和国, has tried to walk 支援する his プロの/賛成の-Russia rhetoric , 説, "We´ve been taken by surprise by the whole thing."

That´s left Trump 比較して 孤立するd, defending his 決定/判定勝ち(する) to label Putin as "smart" and 非難するing the 返答 from Biden and other Western leaders, even as he has 公然と非難するd the 侵略 as "horrific" and a "very sad thing for the world."

"北大西洋条約機構 has the money now, but they´re not doing the 職業 they should be doing," he said this week on Fox 商売/仕事. "It´s almost like they´re staying away."

That has earned rebuke from some in his party.

In a speech to GOP 寄贈者s Friday night, Pence forcefully defended 北大西洋条約機構 and admonished those who have defended Putin as he, too, 重さを計るs a 大統領の run.

"There is no room in this party for apologists for Putin," he said, によれば his 用意が出来ている 発言/述べるs. "There is only room for 支持する/優勝者s of freedom."

上院 共和国の/共和党の Leader Mitch McConnell told Fox News there "should be no 混乱 about Vladimir Putin.

"He´s a 凶漢. He´s a 殺し屋," McConnell said. "He´s been on the rampage and this will not end 井戸/弁護士席 for him."

Chris Stirewalt, a 上級の fellow at the 権利-leaning American 企業 学校/設ける think 戦車/タンク and a 与える/捧げるing editor of The 派遣(する), said Russia's 侵略 of ウクライナ共和国 is fundamentally different from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that turned large 列s of the American public against foreign 介入 and which Trump was able to use to his political advantage.

"Putin," he said, "has undone so much of what Trump and 国家主義者s in the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs had done to change the 全世界の order."
