Powerful French abortion 演劇 `Happening´ lands in US
It´s 1963 in フラン and Anne is an ambitious, 23-year-old college student who becomes 妊娠している. She doesn't want to be. She's not ready to be a mother. But abortion isn´t 合法的な in the country and won´t be for another 12 years. In the new film " Happening," Anne must find a 解答 on her own, though that choice also means 危険ing her life and freedom.
"Happening" is a based on a true story. It belongs to author Annie Ernaux, who published her account of the traumatic experience in 2001. Forty years after the fact, Ernaux´s frank and honest memories of the unwanted pregnancy, the 孤立／分離, the 恐れる and her 決意 struck a chord even though the 手続き had then been 合法的な in フラン for over 25 years.
The film adaptation opens in North American theaters Friday with a 新たにするd 緊急 around 接近 to abortion. A 報告（する）／憶測 Monday night 示唆するd the U.S. 最高裁判所 could be 均衡を保った to overturn the 目印 1973 魚の卵 v. Wade 事例／患者 that 合法化するd abortion in the U.S. The 漏れるd 草案 opinion would 許す individual 明言する／公表するs to more ひどく 規制する or 完全な 禁止（する） the 手続き.
Diwan said that she didn't make the film to give answers but to ask questions. Though it's technically a period piece, she was 熱心に aware that she was also making something that met the moment by putting the audience in the shoes of her working class protagonist.
"When I read the 調書をとる／予約する, I had the feeling that it was a 肉親，親類d of 激しい thriller," said writer-director Audrey Diwan in an interview last week. "I 手配中の，お尋ね者 the movie to be a physical experience - not a political manifesto but a true cinematic experience."
She didn´t want to the camera to show Anne. She 手配中の，お尋ね者 the camera to be Anne. And she needed an actor who could throw herself into the 役割 肉体的に and emotionally, who could 伝える a world of feelings with just a look and who would be an 知識人 partner in the 過程.

When French-Romanian actress Anamaria Vartolomei walked into the audition and dove into a candid conversation about the nudity that would be 要求するd, Diwan knew she´d 設立する someone special.
"I thought, she has something in ありふれた with Anne," Diwan said. "There´s a 決意."
決意 might even be an understatement. When Vartolomei, now 23, got the script from her スパイ／執行官 she told herself, "This will be my part. I will let no other actor do it."
Still, she was 感謝する for the extra time that COVID-19 lockdowns 供給するd. She 熟考する／考慮するd the '60s and watched films that Diwan recommended, like the Dardennes' "Rosetta," L?szl? Nemes' "Son of Saul" and Darren Aronofsky's "黒人／ボイコット Swan," all of which helped 知らせる さまざまな 面s of the character.
Much of Anne's 旅行 is a silent one - the word abortion isn't even uttered in the film (nor is it in the 調書をとる／予約する) . To help her actor, Diwan （機の）カム up with some 内部の monologues, words and 宣告，判決s that Vartolomei could repeat in her 長，率いる that would help get her in the 権利 mindset before filming particular scenes.
"The その上の she goes, the more paranoid she becomes," Vartolomei said. "She´s so afraid of 存在 caught. Everything becomes more 内部の. She is a 兵士 and she has to lead an inner war and stay 焦点（を合わせる）d on her goal."
Then there are the several scenes in which Anne experiences 大規模な 苦痛. They get more 激しい as the story and pregnancy 進歩. To help bring Anne´s 不快 to light, Vartolomei used an earpiece with a tick-tok sound. Not only did it help her feel disoriented and irritated for the scenes, but it also became a sort of physical manifestation of time running out with this "爆弾" growing inside her.
These scenes are no 疑問 harrowing, but Diwan 信用s the audience to choose for themselves how much they want to watch and if they need a break while doing so.
"Annie Ernaux, when she 令状s, she doesn´t look away, so I can´t look away," Diwan said. "I 手配中の，お尋ね者 the film to feel immersive but I didn´t want the audience to feel 罠にかける."
The film was hard to get made and Diwan´s greatest 恐れる was that it wouldn´t be seen. She needn´t have worried, though, since the day after "Happening" won the 最高の，を越す prize at the Venice Film Festival from a 陪審／陪審員団 that 含むd Oscar-winning directors Bong Joon-売春婦 and Chlo? Zhao, she got word that it would be shown to audiences around the world.
It´s been a breakout moment for Vartolomei, who has been working as an actor in フラン since she was 10. "Happening" has helped put her on another level, not just as an adult actor but as one with 全世界の 可能性のある. She´d like to do films in her native Romania and in Hollywood, too. After the film won at Venice, Vartolomei 調印するd with the powerful talent 機関 CAA and already there are some exciting things in the 作品 that she can´t yet talk about 公然と. She´s a little anxious her English isn´t strong enough yet, but she´s working on it.
For the past several months, she and Diwan have been on a 非，不，無-stop 回路・連盟 with the film. And every 審査 招待するs new, 利益／興味ing conversations, 特に in countries where abortion 権利s are 存在 challenged. They´ve heard intimate stories from women who have gone through the same thing as Anne and 証言s from both sexes who´ve said they´ve 再考するd their 姿勢 on the 問題／発行する after seeing the film.
"Women can finally talk about it without 恐れるing 存在 understood and heard," Vartolomei said. "I´m happy and proud to be part of this change."
