Latino activism leads in grassroot 成果／努力s on 気候 change
PHOENIX (AP) - Students at a 大部分は Hispanic elementary school in 不死鳥／絶品 have long lined up for morning classes on a dusty patch of dirt under a broiling sun.
So when Tony Mada learned of 計画（する）s to 工場／植物 75 young trees at Borman Elementary School, the 30-year-old and his daughter Lilyth, 10, joined 得点する／非難する／２０s of volunteers to 増加する shade on campus.
砂漠 willows, oaks and mesquites just a few feet tall were の中で trees 工場／植物d at the event 組織するd by the 地元の nonprofit Trees 事柄 and the 環境の organization The Nature Conservancy, which is 拡大するing its 焦点（を合わせる） beyond the wildlands to 都市の areas 衝撃d by 気候-燃料d heat.
"I´ll do anything to 冷静な／正味の things 負かす／撃墜する for my kids in this hot 近隣," Mada said one Saturday this spring as he and Lilyth, a student at the school, 解放する／自由なd an acacia tree from the 木造の box 持つ／拘留するing its roots.
After experiencing 全世界の warming's firsthand 影響s, U.S. Latinos are 主要な the way in activism around 気候 change, often 製図／抽選 on traditions from their ancestral 母国s.
"There has been a real 国家の 反乱 in Latino activism in environmentalism in 最近の years," said Juan Roberto Madrid, an 環境の science and public health specialist based in Colorado for the 国家の nonprofit GreenLatinos. "気候 change may be 衝撃ing everyone, but it is 衝撃ing Latinos more."

U.S. Latinos often live in ignored, lower income 近隣s that are degrees hotter than nearby areas because they have a higher 全住民 濃度／密度 and 限られた／立憲的な tree canopy. Hispanics are also 不均衡な 影響する／感情d by chronic health 条件s 悪化させるd by extreme heat, like 糖尿病 and heart and 腎臓 病気.
Latino 行動主義者s are now sounding the alarm about the 危険s of 全世界の warming for their 近隣s and the world. They 含む a teen who 抗議するd every Friday for weeks outside U.N. （警察，軍隊などの）本部 in New York, a Southern California academic who wants more grassroots 成果／努力s 含むd in 全世界の 気候 組織するing and a Mexico-born 支持する in 不死鳥／絶品 who teaches young Hispanics the importance of 保護するing Earth for 未来 世代s.
"Many members of the Latinx community have Indigenous roots," said Masavi Perea, 組織するing director for Chispa Arizona, a program of the League of 自然保護 投票者s. "A lot of us grew up on ranches, so many of us already have a 関係 with nature."
Walking through 列／漕ぐ／騒動s of kale, corn and squash at Chispa's 陰謀（を企てる） in a south 不死鳥／絶品 garden, the 47-year-old said he 作品 to 増加する the group´s base and educate young members about 環境の 問題／発行するs like 気候 change.
Perea, a naturalized U.S. 国民 初めは from Mexico, said Chispa members 含む Central Americans he calls "気候 難民s" who fled countries 乱打するd by ハリケーンs and 干ばつs.

Colorado College's 自然保護 in the West 投票 published this year showed 顕著に higher 百分率s of Latino, 黒人／ボイコット and Indigenous 投票者s in eight western 明言する／公表するs 関心d about 気候 change, 汚染 and the 衝撃 of 化石 燃料s.
Latino and other communities of color are 不均衡な 影響する／感情d by 気候 change, such as more たびたび（訪れる）, 激しい and longer 熱波s in 不死鳥／絶品, Las Vegas, Palm Springs and other arid western communities.
A 熟考する／考慮する by 研究員s from the University of California, Davis and the American University of Beirut 結論するd last year that poor and Latino 近隣s in 20 metro 地域s around the 南西 耐える 気温s several degrees higher on the hottest days, creating greater 危険s for heat-関係のある illness.
不死鳥／絶品, the hottest big city in the U.S., in 最近の years has seen some of its hottest summers, with a 熱波 a year ago 押し進めるing 気温s up to 118 degrees (48 Celsius).
The city earlier this year worked with the 自然保護 nonprofit American Forests to create the first of 100 "冷静な／正味の 回廊（地帯）s" by 工場／植物ing shade trees for 歩行者s and cyclists と一緒に a south 不死鳥／絶品 park 指名するd for the late Latino 行動主義者 Cesar Chavez.
"It's much hotter here now than when I first moved here," Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego, who lives nearby, said as he 小旅行するd the 259 newly 工場／植物d 干ばつ 抵抗力のある elm, ash, sissoo and Chinese pistache trees.
Gallego, who was born in Chicago and raised there by his Colombian mother, said segregation in 不死鳥／絶品 once 軍隊d 黒人／ボイコットs and Latino 居住（者）s to live in the city's south, which meant より小数の trees and other 投資s there.
He h as teamed up with fellow 民主党員 U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, of New Jersey, on a 法案 to create $30 million in 連邦の 認めるs 毎年 for several years to 緩和する the 影響s of 都市の heat, 特に in low-income communities of color.

気候 政策 scholar Michael M?ndez, author of the 調書をとる／予約する "気候 Change from the Streets," said grassroots 組織するing is 平等に important.
M?ndez grew up the son of Mexican 移民，移住（する）s in Los Angeles 郡´s Fernando Valley, where he saw Latino neighbors fight against 空気／公表する 汚染 and ダンピング of 有毒な waste.
"It's not an abstract idea for us," said M?ndez, who teaches at the University of California, Irvine. "For Latinos, 気候 change is about how to 保護する our families, our children."
