2024 contest comes into 見解(をとる) with 障害物s for both parties

NEW YORK (AP) - Both 政党s are 開始 the new year 直面するing 批判的な questions about the people and 政策s they want to embrace as the next 選挙 速度(を上げる)s into 見解(をとる).

The challenges are 特に 緊急の for 共和国の/共和党のs, who hoped to enter 2023 with a 安全な・保証する 支配する on one, if not both, 議会s of 議会. Instead, an underwhelming midterm 選挙 産する/生じるd only a thin House 大多数 that will expose 猛烈な/残忍な intraparty 分割s this week as California Rep. Kevin McCarthy fights for the speakership. And before the end of the month, the 共和国の/共和党の 国家の 委員会 must 解決する a 意見の不一致を生じる leadership 戦う/戦い of its own.

A central 人物/姿/数字 in 事実上 everything is Donald Trump, the former 大統領,/社長 who transformed the GOP more than seven years ago and is still fighting to 発揮する his will over 共和国の/共和党のs in 議会, the RNC and 共和国の/共和党の 投票者s just as the next 大統領の 最初の/主要な season begins.

RNC 議長,司会を務める Ronna McDaniel 定評のある, in an interview, that her party´s greatest political challenge ahead may come from within as party leaders navigate Trump´s outsized 役割.

"There´s so much at 火刑/賭ける we can´t afford to be divided 長,率いるing into 2024," McDaniel said, 約束ing that the RNC would be 中立の in the ぼんやり現れるing 大統領の 指名/任命 過程. "If we are divided, we will lose."

For now, at least, 民主党員s appear to be far more 部隊d than their 共和国の/共和党の 相当するものs.

But much depends on Joe Biden and whether the 80-year-old 大統領,/社長 will follow through on his 計画(する) to 捜し出す reelection. If he eschews another 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 - and a formal 告示 may be months away - 民主党員s would be thrust into a murky 未来 with no obvious popular 代案/選択肢s.

Vermont Sen. Bernie やすりを削る人/削る機械s, who did not 支配する out another 大統領の 企て,努力,提案 of his own, said 民主党員s are also at a "pivotal moment," 直面するing 割れ目s in their delicate political 連合 の中で young people, African Americans, Latinos and working-class 投票者s.

"It 苦痛s me very, very much that we´re seeing more and more working-class people 投票(する)ing 共和国の/共和党の," he said in an interview. "政治上, that is a 災害, and 民主党員s have to 認める that serious problem and 演説(する)/住所 it."

Though many 投票者s may be tired of the never-ending (選挙などの)運動をする that is U.S. politics, 特に after a high-火刑/賭けるs midterm 選挙 in 2022, the 緊張した dynamics 保証(人) the political スポットライト will only 燃やす brighter in the new year. If history is a guide, the 開始 大統領の 最初の/主要な 審議s are just seven months away. And the 審議 行う/開催する/段階 is 推定する/予想するd to be (人が)群がるd - at least on the GOP 味方する. No より小数の than 10 high-profile 共和国の/共和党のs are 活発に 重さを計るing 2024 大統領の 企て,努力,提案s in open 反抗 of Trump, emboldened by the growing belief that the former 大統領,/社長 is as 政治上 攻撃を受けやすい as he´s ever been.

At the moment, Trump is the only 発表するd 候補者 in the 共和国の/共和党の 最初の/主要な. But a handful of 候補者s are 推定する/予想するd to join by the end of March, while some higher-profile 競争相手s - Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, の中で them - believe they can wait until late spring or even 早期に summer to make their 意向s known.

Few believe Trump will be 平易な to 倒れる in a GOP 最初の/主要な. Already, he has begun to 激しく打ちのめす at would-be 競争相手s by 指名する, and he 持続するs a 激しく揺する-solid 支配する の中で the party's most active 投票者s, who will 支配する GOP 最初の/主要な contests.

Still, 投票者s will have several op tions in a likely field that features DeSantis, former 副大統領 マイク Pence, former 国務長官 マイク Pompeo and 去っていく/社交的な Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, の中で several others. Most have already begun 活発に 法廷,裁判所ing 寄贈者s and making 関係s on the ground in 早期に 明言する/公表するs on the 大統領の 最初の/主要な calendar.

Before the 大統領の 指名/任命 過程 begins in earnest, the GOP must first 解決する a contentious leadership fight in the House. And by month's end, the 共和国の/共和党の 国家の 委員会 will decide whether to elect McDaniel to a fourth two-year 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語.

Much of the energy from Trump's Make America 広大な/多数の/重要な Again movement has 決起大会/結集させるd behind California 弁護士/代理人/検事 Harmeet Dhillon in an ますます 汚い leadership fight that will be decided at the 委員会's winter 会合 later in the month after three 連続した disappointing 選挙 cycles.

Trump and his 現体制支持者/忠臣s will 人物/姿/数字 prominently in each of the 衝突/不一致s. But 目だつ 設立 共和国の/共和党のs are 押し進めるing 支援する much more 積極性.

Steven 法律, a 重要な Mitch McConnell 同盟(する) who leads the 上院 GOP's 主要な 最高の PAC, 公約するd to "play a much more assertive 役割" in 形態/調整ing 未来 上院 contests. That's just as the 後継の 長,率いる of the 上院 GOP (選挙などの)運動をする arm, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., 示唆するs that his 委員会 will 活発に play in 共和国の/共和党の 最初の/主要なs to 確実にする that 候補者s who can be more 競争の激しい with the broader 総選挙 audience 前進する. That's a 著名な 逆転 from the 委員会's 現在の 手渡すs-off practice, which was 非難するd for elevating 候補者s who failed to 拡大する their support beyond the base.

On paper, 上院 共和国の/共和党のs have major 適切な時期s ahead in red 明言する/公表するs like West Virginia, Montana and Ohio, where 民主党員s are up for reelection i n 2024. To take 十分な advantage, however, the GOP must 避ける the same "候補者 質" 問題/発行するs that 疫病/悩ますd the party in the November midterms as a 予定する of 深く,強烈に 欠陥d Trump-支援するd 候補者s lost 重要な 上院 contests in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

"新規採用 is going to be 職業 one, starting now," 法律 said. "The first step is to do everything we can to get the best possible 候補者 in the field."

法律 was 楽観的な that Trump would stay out of 上院 最初の/主要な contests in 2024 given the needs of his 大統領の (選挙などの)運動をする. McConnell, R-Ky., the 上院's 共和国の/共和党の leader, 申し込む/申し出d a 類似の 感情 in a 最近の interview with NBC News.

"We can do a better 職業 with いっそう少なく 可能性のある 干渉,妨害," McConnell said of Trump. "The former 大統領,/社長 may have other things to do."

一方/合間, 民主党員s have 問題/発行するs of their own to sort out - the most 圧力(をかける)ing, of course, is whether Biden will 捜し出す a second 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語. Already, he is the oldest 大統領,/社長 in U.S. history. 投票ing 示唆するs that a 重要な number of 投票者s in both parties don't want him to run again.

The Democratic 大統領,/社長, who spent new year's 週末 with family in the U.S. Virgin Islands, has said he 目的(とする)s to make a final 決定/判定勝ち(する) over the holidays.

Biden told reporters the day after the midterms that he ーするつもりであるs to run, but that he is a "respecter of 運命/宿命." 補佐官s and 同盟(する)s are already making 準備s for a (選挙などの)運動をする 開始する,打ち上げる, though they are 避けるing overt steps that could be seen as getting in 前線 of Biden´s 決定/判定勝ち(する)-making 過程.

A formal (選挙などの)運動をする 開始する,打ち上げる isn´t 推定する/予想するd until the second 4半期/4分の1 of 2023, both to maximize the incumbency advantage 申し込む/申し出d to Biden - 許すing him to try to stay above the political fray for as long as possible - and to 避ける having to 報告(する)/憶測 fundraising duri ng the 歴史的に weak first 4半期/4分の1.

And while a 2024 Biden run is likely, some 民主党員s are working to change his mind.

A 進歩/革新的な group has been running 広告s under the 旗,新聞一面トップの大見出し/大々的に報道する "Don't Run Joe" across Georgia, Michigan and South Carolina in 最近の days. The 広告 (選挙などの)運動をする features Democratic 投票者s 非難するing the 大統領,/社長 as "status-quo Joe," while 最高潮の場面ing his weak 投票ing numbers.

"If he runs, the 選挙 is at serious 危険," one 投票者 says of Biden in the new 広告, which will also begin running on CNN in Washington, D.C., on Monday, によれば one of the group's leaders, Norman Solomon.

There is no (疑いを)晴らす Democratic 代案/選択肢 should Biden not run, however. That may help explain why most Democratic 公式の/役人s are 率直に encouraging the 大統領,/社長 to run again.

In an interview, 進歩/革新的な leader Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said he wouldn't challenge the 大統領,/社長 in a 最初の/主要な and he discouraged anyone from the party's 進歩/革新的な wing from doing so.

"At this point, I don´t think a 立候補 from someone would do anything other than 弱める the 大統領,/社長. And why would you want to do that 長,率いるd into an 選挙 that´s going to be の近くに?" he said.

Quentin Wathum-Ocama, 大統領,/社長 of the Young 民主党員s of America, has been 批判的な of Biden in the past but said he's "good" if Biden wants to run again.

Even if young people are not 極端に excited about the Biden 行政, he said, they feel a "sense of 義務 and 義務" to support the party because of the 脅しs to 僕主主義 that Trump and his 同盟(する)s 代表する.

"We´re not always going to be 最高の enthused, but we´re going to show the hell up," Wathum -Ocama said. "We´re obligated to show up because we know what happens next - and that could be something even scarier than what we saw on Jan. 6."

やすりを削る人/削る機械s 主張するd that the Democratic Party "has got to be more than the anti-Trump party."

The Vermont 独立した・無所属 said 民主党員s in 議会 must move with real 緊急 to 演説(する)/住所 the 腐食 of working-class 投票者s who are ますます willing to support Trump and his 共和国の/共和党の 同盟(する)s. He called on 上院 民主党員s to 可決する・採択する a higher 最小限 行う, の中で other 労働者-friendly 法律制定 that would 実験(する) the new 共和国の/共和党の-controlled House´s かかわり合い to working-class 投票者s.

As for his own 2024 意向s, the 81-year-old やすりを削る人/削る機械s, who sought the Democratic 指名/任命 for 大統領,/社長 in 2016 and 2020, said it was not the 権利 time to discuss whether he might 開始する,打ち上げる another White House 企て,努力,提案.

"I´ll make a 決定/判定勝ち(する) at the appropriate time," やすりを削る人/削る機械s said. "People need to breathe."
