Family 関係 have long run strong in the 階級s of NFL coaches
Luke Steckel is finishing his 10th season with the Tennessee 巨人s, the very same NFL team that made its 孤独な 最高の Bowl 外見 with his father, Les, as 不快な／攻撃 調整者／コーディネーター.
That 関係 didn't get Luke Steckel into the family 商売／仕事.
That credit goes to a friend from college and an interview that took Steckel away from 存在 a 生産／産物 assistant on "アイロンをかける Man 2" to his other passion: football.
Les Steckel, who worked for seven different NFL teams and coaches, had nothing to do with his son getting his first football 職業 in Cleveland. His son called his father to tell him about the interview.
"It´s funny how that stuff 作品 out, but growing up in that 環境 where it´s ... 肉親，親類d of hard to escape it," Steckel said. "This is a fun 商売／仕事. There´s there´s some highs and lows, but it´s hard to match it with anything else."

Fathers 雇うing sons or recommending them to friends on other teams can unwittingly perpetuate the sport´s long struggle with 終始一貫して placing coaches of color in the 最高の，を越す 役割s.

Of the 35 men who served as a 長，率いる coach during the 2022 season - there have been three firings and その後の 暫定的な 交替／補充s - 12 are 関係のある to 現在の or former NFL coaches. 研究 by USA Today 設立する at least 93 of 717 on-field coaches this season (about 13%) are 関係のある to a 現在の or former NFL coach, and 76 of those 93 family-connected coaches are white.

Those 関係s can last 世代s. Sean McVay - grandson of former 巨大（な）s coach and 49ers GM John McVay - got his first NFL 職業 on Jon Gruden's staff in Tampa Bay in 2008, about four １０年間s after Gruden's father, Jim, was 雇うd on John McVay's staff at Dayton.
John McVay also helped Jon Gruden get his first NFL 職業 with the 49ers in 1990, and Gruden said before 直面するing Sean McVay as a 長，率いる coach for the first time in 2018: "It was my time to help a McVay and I 手配中の，お尋ね者 to give Sean an 適切な時期 to be a coach."
McVay got his first 不快な／攻撃 調整者／コーディネーター 職業 in Washington under Jay Gruden, after spending four years as an assistant there under マイク Shanahan - who also worked for his father in San Francisco.
マイク's son, Kyle, also joined the family 商売／仕事, getting his first NFL 職業 on Gruden's staff in Tampa in 2004. Kyle Shanahan then worked under his father's former player and assistant, Gary Kubiak in Houston, then as 不快な／攻撃 調整者／コーディネーター under his father in Washington and now is finishing his sixth season as 長，率いる coach in San Francisco.
Shanahan credits the time he spent as a kid に引き続いて his father around for helping him learn the 商売／仕事.
"You don´t realize how much that stuff helps you until you 肉親，親類d of get into work and you realize the advantages you have and some of the stuff like, `I guess maybe I was learning as I was growing up and 支払う／賃金ing attention to a lot of stuff,´" Shanahan said. "I don´t think that´s just 全く unusual with me and my dad and father and sons in football. I think that´s, if you go by 百分率s, I think a lot of kids follow their parents into work, 特に if they have a good 関係 with them."
Seattle coach Pete Carroll´s son, Nate, has been with the Seahawks since he was 雇うd in 2010 and 現在／一般に serves as an 不快な／攻撃 assistant. New England coach 法案 Belichick´s sons, Steve and Brian, have been 愛国者s assistants for 11 and seven years, それぞれ. New York Jets 不快な／攻撃 調整者／コーディネーター マイク LaFleur is the younger brother of Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur, who worked with now-Jets coach Robert Saleh as 卒業生（する） assistants at Central Michigan in 2004. Saleh got to know マイク during lunch breaks at the LaFleur home 近づく the campus.
"They were trying to save every cent they could because they were GAs and they knew that my parents were 権利 負かす／撃墜する the street," マイク LaFleur said. "So they´re going to come eat our food and watch all the TV that I was trying to watch and use our pool."
With his Princeton degree, Steckel easily could hve gone to 塀で囲む Street. His father encouraged him to chase his passion. Steckel did that, first working in movies and then football. He worked for Mangini, then Pat Shurmur over four seasons.
Then-巨人s coach マイク Munchak, who coached the 不快な／攻撃 line during Les Steckel's six seasons, 雇うd Luke as his assistant in 2013. Luke stayed on staff with Ken Whisenhunt, his 後継者 マイク Mularkey and also now coach マイク Vrabel. He 促進するd Luke to tight ends coach in 2021.
"It´s such a blessing, and I feel really 感謝する to be here," Steckel said of spending a １０年間 in a place he consi ders home.
