NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The Virginia elementary school where a 6-year-old boy 発射 his teacher 再開するd Monday with stepped-up 安全 and a new 行政官/管理者, as nervous parents and students 表明するd 楽観主義 about a return to the classroom.
Richneck Elementary School in Newport News opened its doors more than three weeks after the Jan. 6 狙撃. Police have said the boy brought a 9 mm handgun to school and 故意に 発射 his teacher, Abby Zwerner, as she was teaching her first-grade class. Zwerner, 25, was 入院させるd for nearly two weeks but is now 回復するing at home.
Several police cars were parked at the school as teachers arrived.
The 調印する in 前線 of the building read "Richneck Strong" and was でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れるd by two red hearts. Other 調印するs along the sidewalks read, "We are praying for you," "You are loved" and "We believe in you."
Students were 迎える/歓迎するd by a line of police officers, 市長 Phillip Jones, and other adults who gave them high-fives as they walked into the school.
Jennifer 魚の卵 said she and her fourth-grader, Jethro, saw a therapist after the 狙撃.

"He's excited to get 支援する to school. He's 行方不明になるd it," 魚の卵 said.
"There are 関心s, of course," she said. "We talked through it. His therapist gave me a thumbs-up and said he's good."
Jethro said he still had some 関心 "it might happen again," but that the 増加するd 安全 made him feel better.
"I'm still a little nervous, but I've 静めるd 負かす/撃墜する a lot," he said.
Melissa McBride, who brought her fourth-grade twins to school, said one of them wasn't sleeping that 井戸/弁護士席 after the 狙撃, but the children felt better after …に出席するing an open house at the school last week.
"It was 抱擁する to see their friends and everybody 存在 happy," she said.
McBride said she was 慰安d when she saw the twins "going into school with no hesitation," but that she was still "a little nervous."
Many parents walked their children in, but Jordan Vestre said his third-grader, Jaxon, asked if he could walk in alone. Vestre said he gave Jaxon a 抱擁する and "stood 支援する a little teary-注目する,もくろむd and watched him high-five all the police officers and the 市長."
Vestre said his son "fully understands what happened." But he 追加するd: "How do you talk to an 8-year-old about a school 狙撃? It´s ridiculous."
Eve Parham said her four th-grade granddaughter was very excited to return to school, 特に to her 弓術,射手隊 class. Parham 賞賛するd the 付加 safety 対策, 含むing the planned 配当 of (疑いを)晴らす backpacks to students.
There were two other 狙撃s in Newport News schools in the 16 months before the Richland 狙撃. Two 17-year-old students were 負傷させるd when a 15-year-old boy 解雇する/砲火/射撃d 発射s in a (人が)群がるd high school hallway. Two months later, an 18-year-old student fatally 発射 a 17-year-old in the parking lot of a different high school.
"Unfortunately, the teacher had to be our sacrificial lamb to bring this to light," Parham said, referring to Zwerner. "I applaud her. And I´m 感謝する that she´s okay and that it 原因(となる)d this reaction."
Eric Billet, who has a second-grader and a fourth-grader at Richneck, said that although he´s happy with the 増加するd 安全, he also 恐れるs that Richneck could be "わずかに overcorrecting" with some of its new 政策s, 含むing not wanting students to bring in toys or anything that´s not considered 教育の.
"It´s good, but I just don´t want it to turn into a 刑務所,拘置所 feel if you start 割れ目ing 負かす/撃墜する on too many things," Billet said.
Not all teachers were ready to return.
James 墓/厳粛/彫る/重大なs, who 長,率いるs the 地元の teachers union, the Newport News Education 協会, said he has heard from several who were told that if they weren't ready to come 支援する, they must use their personal leave time or the Family and 医療の Leave 行為/法令/行動する, which 供給するs some 従業員s with up to 12 weeks of 未払いの, 職業-保護するd leave.
"There are teachers who are glad to 肉親,親類d of go 支援する because they care about the kids, and there are teachers who cannot 扱う 外傷/ショック and 強調する/ストレス the way other teachers can," 墓/厳粛/彫る/重大なs said. "I want to make sure the teachers who cannot 扱う that stres s because of what happened, that they are taken care of."
The school board 議長,司会を務める, Lisa Surles-法律, said roses were 手渡すd out to the students and therapy dogs were made 利用できる to all first-graders.
Zwerner´s classroom remained の近くにd. Her students will be taught in another classroom, Surles-法律 said.
"I walked the building a little while ago, and (the teachers) are very excited to welcome their students 支援する," she said.
The 狙撃 sent shockwaves through Newport News, a city of about 185,000 that is known for its shipbuilding 産業. It has also raised questions about school 安全 and how a child so young could 伸び(る) 接近 to a gun and shoot his teacher.
Since then, two metal (犯罪,病気などの)発見 systems have been 任命する/導入するd and two 安全 officers have been 割り当てるd to the school, said 地区 spokeswoman Michelle Price. Before the 狙撃, one 安全 officer was 割り当てるd to Richneck and another elementary school. The officer was not at Richneck at the time of the 狙撃.
The 主要な/長/主犯 and assistant 主要な/長/主犯 both have left their 職業s, and a new 行政官/管理者 has been 任命するd to lead the school.
Superintendent George Parker, who was 解雇する/砲火/射撃d by the school board last week, has said that at least one school 行政官/管理者 received a tip that the boy may have brought a 武器 to school, but no 武器 was 設立する when the boy's backpack was searched.
Zwerner's lawyer, Diane Toscano, said that on the day of the 狙撃, 関心d staff at Richneck 警告するd 行政官/管理者s three times that the boy had a gun and was 脅すing other students, but the 行政 didn´t call police or 除去する the boy from class.
Police said the handgun was 合法的に 購入(する)d by the boy's mother. In a 声明 解放(する)d through their 弁護士/代理人/検事, the boy's family said the gun was "安全な・保証するd." 弁護士/代理人/検事 James Ellenson told The Associated 圧力(をかける) that his understanding is that the gun was in the mother's closet on a shelf 井戸/弁護士席 over 6 feet (1.8 メーターs) high and had a 誘発する/引き起こす lock that 要求するd a 重要な.
