法案 Gates joins 26 newcomers on 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of 50 biggest 寄贈者s

As the 階級s of America´s 最高の 豊富な grow, the roster of major philanthropists is 拡大するing to 含む not-so-typical megadonors - の中で them, a professional clarinetist, a Ph.D. in meat science, and a lawyer who 定期的に argues before the U.S. 最高裁判所.

That´s によれば a Chronicle of Philanthropy 分析 of giving by the country´s 50 biggest 寄贈者s in 2022. Twenty-six of the 50 are new to the Chronicle´s 年次の 最高位の, which dates to 2000. They 含む big 指名するs from 商売/仕事 such as Airbnb´s Brian Chesky (who gave $100 million to the Obama 創立/基礎), FedEx´s Fred Smith ($65 million to the 海洋 軍団 Scholarship 創立/基礎), and Roku 創立者 Anthony 支持を得ようと努めるd ($71.5 million to several charitable giving 乗り物s).

Also, Jacklyn Bezos, mother of アマゾン 創立者 Jeff Bezos, made her debut on the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) with her husband, Miguel. The two gave $710.5 million to the Fred Hutchinson 癌 中心.

Other Philanthropy 50 first-timers, however, 欠如(する) the 国家の profile, the Silicon Valley 演説(する)/住所, or 塀で囲む Street 信任状 that are commonplace in today´s philanthropy world, where such tech and 財政/金融 巨人s as 法案 Gates, 示す Zucke rberg, and 過密な住居 Buffett 始める,決める the トン. (The 十分な 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) is here.)

The 最高位の´s newcomers 含む:

- Edward Avedisian, a retired Boston Pops clarinetist who amassed a fortune 貿易(する)ing 在庫/株s on the 味方する. Avedisian gave $100 million to Boston University before his death in December.

- David Frederick and his wife, Sophia Lynn, who made gifts totaling $40 million to the University of Pittsburgh and Oxford University in England. Frederick is an appellate 弁護士/代理人/検事 who´s argued dozens of 事例/患者s before the 最高裁判所.

- Sisters Mary Bastian and Emily Markham, the last members of a multigenerational Utah farming and ranching family, who 寄付するd 100 acres of land 価値(がある) $41.3 million to Utah 明言する/公表する University.

- Gordon and Joyce Davis, who gave $44 million to Texas Tech, where Gordon - who 持つ/拘留するs a 博士号 in meat science - once taught and coached the university´s meat-裁判官ing team to a 国家の 選手権.

The 最高位の´s changing composition 反映するs in part the country´s 急上昇するing wealth. More than 141,000 Americans have a 逮捕する 価値(がある) of $50 million or higher - nearly four times more than just a 10年間 ago, によれば the 財政/金融 company Credit Suisse. Growth 加速するd during the pandemic, with the number climbing 75% in just two years.

The rise of the 最高の 豊富な 同時に起こる/一致するs with and 燃料s another 傾向: greater fundraising sophistication and the ambition to snare big gifts. 最高の,を越す-tier, high-profile 会・原則s such as Boston University, the Obama 創立/基礎, and the 主要都市の Museum of Art received individual 寄付s of at least $10 million from Philanthropy 50 寄贈者s in 2022. But so did the 空気/公表する 軍隊 学院; McPherson, a small 自由主義の-arts college in Kansas; and Samford, a Christian university in Alabama.

Altogether, ha lf of the Philanthropy 50 made 出資/貢献s to organizations that 報告(する)/憶測d the 寄付 as the largest in their history. Also, while big philanthropy is often 非難するd as 存在 too 焦点(を合わせる)d on the coasts and 都市の areas, half of the 34 gifts to U.S. higher education went to 会・原則s in the country´s 内部の, some to land-認める universities such as Oregon 明言する/公表する, Purdue, and Utah 明言する/公表する. The University of Pennsylvania was the 孤独な Ivy League 受取人.

The 寄贈者s at the 最高位の´s pinnacle are fixtures in philanthropy. Gates 最高の,を越すs the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) in his 13th Philanthropy 50 外見; the Microsoft mogul gave away $5.1 billion in 2022, more than a third of the $14 billion 寄付するd by the Philanthropy 50 collectively. The 本体,大部分/ばら積みの of his gift was a 移転 of 在庫/株 to the 創立/基礎 he runs with his former wife, Melinda French Gates. Michael Bloomberg - 創立者 of the Bloomberg 財政上の-news empire, a former 市長 of New York, and an 18-time 退役軍人 of the 最高位の - finished second; he gave away $1.7 billion to 原因(となる)s that 含む the arts, education, 環境, public health, and programs 目的(とする)d at 改善するing city 政府s globally.

As in years past, men 支配する the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) of the biggest 寄贈者s. There´s also only one person of color: Taiwanese American Jen-Hsun Huang, who debuted on the 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる) with his wife, Lori, in a tie for No. 40.

(小説家 and high-profile philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is not in the 最高位の, though she has 寄付するd some $14 billion to charities since 2020. It´s likely that Scott made gifts to her 寄贈者-advised 基金s that would have earned her a 位置/汚点/見つけ出す in the 最高位の , but she and her 代表者/国会議員s 拒絶する/低下するd to 供給する (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) to the Chronicle. French Gates, another big-指名する 寄贈者, also did not 株 such (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状).)

にもかかわらず the new 血 in the 最高の,を越す tier of philanthropists, last year´s biggest 寄贈者s hewed closely to 10年間s-old 条約s of charitable giving. At least 14 (ーのために)とっておくd 出資/貢献s to scholarships for high-school or college students - a type of gift that dates 支援する at least 1,000 years.

Ten made 寄付s of at least $10 million to support 研究 on 癌, Parkinson´s, Alzheimer´s, and other 病気s that have stymied 薬/医学 - and attracted philanthropists 追跡(する)ing answers - for 10年間s.

Some philanthropy 観察者/傍聴者s see in these gifts a 焦点(を合わせる) on the 未来 born of the suddenness with which the pandemic and racial reckoning turned society upside 負かす/撃墜する. "We had to throw away our 戦略の 計画(する) because 非,不,無 of it 作品 anymore," says Trista Harris, a former 創立/基礎 leader who now runs FutureGood, a consultancy. 寄贈者s 認めるd "that there might be even bigger change around the corner, and it´s my 責任/義務 to understand what those 可能性s are."

Others worry that the 寄贈者s are not 演説(する)/住所ing the country´s biggest problems. 出資/貢献s by last year´s 50 biggest 寄贈者s toward 気候 change mitigation and 解答s, for instance, reached only $195 million - one-tenth of the more than $2 billion directed to scholarships and 病気 予防. Only a handful of gifts 目的(とする)d to の近くに racial 不平等s.

"The default setting for the biggest 寄贈者s still seems to be to steer away from 演説(する)/住所ing some of the thorniest societal challenges 関係のある, for example, to inequity, 人種差別主義, and the 未来 of our 惑星," says Phil Buchanan, 大統領,/社長 of the 中心 for 効果的な Philanthropy.

After the police 殺人 of George Floyd in 2020 and resul ting 全国的な 抗議するs, a number of major philanthropists stepped 今後 to learn about racial 司法(官) and understand what they could do, says 水晶 Hayling, (n)役員/(a)執行力のある director of the Libra 創立/基礎, which is 主要な a $45 million 成果/努力 to support small, 黒人/ボイコット-led racial 司法(官) organizations.

Now, Hayling says, there´s a 復帰 to the mean. "Conversation is moving 支援する to a place that´s a little bit more comfortable for people of wealth. They say, `Let´s just talk about equal 適切な時期, 職業 pipelines, and 改善するing schools.´ Those things are important, but they can be わずかに evasive of really 演説(する)/住所ing the 問題/発行する of racial 司法(官)."
