She was the first woman to serve as 大統領,/社長 of the San Francisco Board of 監督者s in the 1970s and the first 女性(の) 市長 of San Francisco. She 上がるd to that 地位,任命する after the November 1978 暗殺s of then-市長 George Moscone and City 監督者 Harvey Milk by a former 監督者, Dan White. Feinstein 設立する Milk´s 団体/死体.

In the 上院, she was the first woman to 長,率いる the 上院 知能 委員会 and the first woman to serve as the 司法の 委員会´s 最高の,を越す 民主党員. She 伸び(る)d a 評判 as a pragmatic 中道派(の) who left a 示す on political 戦う/戦いs over 問題/発行するs 範囲ing from reproductive 権利s to 環境の 保護.

Feinstein is 特に closely associated with 成果/努力s to broaden gun 制限s. 早期に in her career, the 上院 認可するd her 改正 to 禁止(する) 製造業の and sales of 確かな types of 強襲,強姦 武器s as part of a 罪,犯罪 法案 that 大統領 法案 Clinton 調印するd into 法律 in 1994. The 禁止(する) 満了する/死ぬd 10 years later and was never 取って代わるd, but it remained a trademark 問題/発行する in a career that was molded by gun 暴力/激しさ.

"Through 軍隊 of will, she led the fight to get the 強襲,強姦 武器s 禁止(する) passed. Like so many who have been touched by gun 暴力/激しさ, that victory was personal for her," 大統領 Joe Biden said in a 声明. "I´ve served with more U.S. 上院議員s than just about anyone. I can honestly say that Dianne Feinstein is one of the very best."

She was also known for reaching out to 共和国の/共和党のs to find middle ground. While that may have helped her notch 法律を制定する 業績/成就s in Washington, it chafed some in a Democratic Party that has moved ますます to the left in 最近の years.

That 失望/欲求不満 was on 陳列する,発揮する during her last reelection (選挙などの)運動をする in 2018. The California Democratic Party 是認するd a 自由主義の 競争相手 for the seat over her, with some 委任する/代表s complaining Feinstein had been in Washington too long and hadn´t stood strong enough for 移民,移住(する)s.

She infuriated 自由主義のs in 2020 when she の近くにd out 確定/確認 審理,公聴会s for 司法(官) Amy Coney Barrett with an embrace of 上院 司法の 委員会 議長,司会を務める Lindsey Graham, a 共和国の/共和党の, and a public thanks to him for a 職業 井戸/弁護士席 done.

自由主義の advocacy groups that had ひどく …に反対するd Barrett´s 指名/任命 to 取って代わる the late 自由主義の icon 司法(官) Ruth Bader Ginsburg were furious and called for her to step 負かす/撃墜する from the 委員会 leadership. A month later, she 発表するd she would remain on the 司法の 委員会 but step 負かす/撃墜する as the 最高の,を越す 民主党員.

But such 緊張 was forgotten on (ワシントンの)連邦議会議事堂 Hill on Tuesday, where 民主党員s 賞賛するd Feinstein's career. At a の近くにd door lunch of Democratic 上院議員s, the 国会議員s broke into 一連の会議、交渉/完成するs of 賞賛 for Feinstein after 上院 大多数 Leader Chuck Schumer 発表するd her 決定/判定勝ち(する).

"She´s a legend," Schumer later told reporters. "A legend in California as the first woman 上院議員; a legend in this 上院. She was the leader on so many different 問題/発行するs, 強襲,強姦 武器s, 環境, women´s 権利s, and so much else. She approached everything studiously and carefully."

At the lunch, Feinstein told her 同僚s how hard her husband´s death was and that she would be ready to step away from public life after finishing this 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語, Sen. El izabeth 過密な住居, D-集まり., said afterward. Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum, died last year.

"上院議員 Feinstein made history," said 過密な住居. "She changed this country and she was a woman on the 前線 lines in fights, like 接近 to 強襲,強姦 武器s, and 国家の 安全 and 知能."

過密な住居 追加するd: "Every other woman in public office 借りがあるs a special 負債 to Dianne Feinstein."

In her home 明言する/公表する, where Feinstein is the longest serving U.S. 上院議員, she was lionized for her historic 任期 in public service.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former House (衆議院の)議長, called her San Francisco neighbor "a 巨人" of the 上院 who, の中で her 業績/成就s, steered billions of 連邦の dollars to California for 環境の 保護. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom called Feinstein a 助言者 and credited her with "炎ing a 追跡する for a new 世代 of 女性(の) 国会議員s."
