A first-time filmmaker makes a 示す in Cannes 競争 with a Senegalese 演劇

CANNES, フラン (AP) - Most filmmakers in the Cannes Film Festival's 最高の，を越す-rung 競争顔触れ are 井戸／弁護士席-known directors who have been around for １０年間s. One 劇の exception this year is Ramata-Toulaye Sy, a French-Senegalese filmmaker whose first film, "Banel & Adama," landed の中で the 21 films competing for the Palme d'Or.

"It´s only now that I realize that 存在 in 競争 means 存在 in a 競争," Sy said, laughing, in an interview すぐに after "Banel & Adama" 首相d in Cannes. "Now that we´re really in the middle of it, I realize there´s a lot of passion going around."

Sy, 36, is the 単独の first-timer in Cannes' main 顔触れ this year. She is also only the second 黒人／ボイコット女性（の） director to ever compete for the Palme, に引き続いて Mati Diop, also a French-Senegalese filmmaker, whose "大西洋s" debuted in 2019. For the Paris-raised Sy, it's not a distinction of significance.

"I´m a filmmaker and I really wish we stopped 存在 counted as women, as 黒人／ボイコット or Arab or Asian," said Sy.

In "Banel & Adama," also the only Africa-始める，決める film competing for the Palme this year, Sy （手先の）技術s a radiant and languorous fable tinged with myth and 悲劇.

Banel (Khady Mane) and Adama (Mamadou Diallo) are a 深く，強烈に in love married couple living in a small village in northern Senegal. In their intimate romantic idyll, they wish to pull away from the 地元の traditions. Adama is 始める，決める to become village 長，指導者 but is uninterested in doing so. Banel dreams of living outside the villag e, in a home buried under a mountain of sand.

While Banel and Adama slowly work to sweep away the sand, their yearning to live on their own 原因（となる）s angst in the village, 特に when a 干ばつ arrives that some take as a 悪口を言う／悪態 for their independence. Though often opaque, the film stays 大部分は with the psychology of Banel, whose 選び出す／独身-mindedness grows ますます dark.

"I was やめる気が進まない at the start to 認める that Banel is me," says Sy. "Now I have to 自白する that it´s definitely me. I see myself, my questions, my struggle in her 旅行. How to do become an individual inside a community is really my own question."

Sy began 令状ing " Banel & Adama" in 2014 as a student at La F?mis, the French film school. Sy, the daughter of Senegalese 移民，移住（する）s, says she was first drawn to literature. Novels like Toni Morrison's "Sula" and Elena Frenate's "My Brilliant Friend" 奮起させるd "Banel & Adama."

"The love story was a pretext for to を取り引きする myth," she says. "I 手配中の，お尋ね者 to have this 肉親，親類d of mythological 女性（の） character that you find in Greek 悲劇."

Sy co-wrote Atiq Rahimi´s "Our Lady of the Nile" and ?agla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti´s "Sibel" - both of which played at international festivals. Her first short film, "Astel," was 井戸／弁護士席-received.

But little 用意が出来ている her for the 強調する／ストレスs of 狙撃 in 田舎の Senegal. Along with heat, sandstorms and 一区切り／（ボクシングなどの）試合s of illness の中で the 乗組員, Sy struggled to find her Banel. In the end, she 設立する Mane while walking around.

"We had all the cast except for her. We started five months before 狙撃 and one month before 狙撃 we still didn´t have her. One day I was walking 負かす／撃墜する the street and my 注目する，もくろむs locked on this girl," says Sy. "It was the way that she looked at me. Her gaze had something a bit wise and a bit crazy."
