For Emmett Till's family, 国家の monument 布告/宣言 固く結び付けるs his 傾向 in the American story

When 大統領 Joe Biden 調印するd a 布告/宣言 Tuesday 設立するing a 国家の monument 栄誉(を受ける)ing Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, it 示すd the fulfillment of a 約束 Till´s 親族s made after his death 68 years ago.

The 黒人/ボイコット 十代の少年少女 from Chicago, whose 誘拐, 拷問 and 殺人,大当り in Mississippi in 1955 helped 推進する the Civil 権利s Movement, is now an American story, not just a civil 権利s story, said Till´s cousin the Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr.

"It has been やめる a 旅行 for me from the 不明瞭 to the light," Parker said during a 布告/宣言 調印 儀式 at the White House …に出席するd by dozens, 含むing other family members, members of 議会 and civil 権利s leaders.

"支援する then in the 不明瞭, I could never imagine the moment like this, standing in the light of 知恵, grace and deliverance," he said.

With the 一打/打撃 of Biden´s pen, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley 国家の Monument, 位置を示すd across three 場所/位置s in two 明言する/公表するs, became federally-保護するd places. Before 調印 the 布告/宣言, the 大統領,/社長 said he marvels at the courage of the Till family to "find 約束 and 目的 in 苦痛."

"Today, on what would have been Emmett's 82nd birthday, we 追加する another 一時期/支部 in the story of remembrance and 傷をいやす/和解させるing," Biden said.

It's the fourth such 任命 by the Democratic 大統領,/社長's 行政, 反映するing its broader civil 権利s 協議事項, the White House said. The move comes as 保守的な leaders, mostly at the 明言する/公表する and 地元の levels, 押し進める 法律制定 that 限界s the teaching of slavery and 黒人/ボイコット history in public schools.

"At a time when there are those who 捜し出す to 禁止(する) 調書をとる/予約するs (and) bury history, we´re making (疑いを)晴らす, 水晶 (疑いを)晴らす," Biden said. "We can´t just choose to learn what we want to know. We should know everything - the good, the bad, the truth of who we are as a nation. That´s what 広大な/多数の/重要な nations do."

On Tuesday, reaction 注ぐd in from other elected 公式の/役人s and from the civil 権利s 組織するing community. The Rev. Al Sharpton said the Till 国家の monument 任命 tells him "that out of 苦痛 comes 力/強力にする."

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jefferies said the monument "places the life and 遺産/遺物 of Emmett Till の中で our nation's most treasured 記念のs."

"黒人/ボイコット history is American history," he said in a written 声明.

Till´s family members, along with a 国家の organization 捜し出すing to 保存する 黒人/ボイコット cultural 遺産 場所/位置s, say their work 保護するing the Till 遺産/遺物 continues. They hope to raise money to 回復する the 場所/位置s and develop 教育の programming to support their 傾向 in the 国家の Park System.

Brent Leggs, (n)役員/(a)執行力のある director of the African American Cultural 遺産 活動/戦闘 基金, a program of the 国家の 信用 for Historic 保護, said the 連邦の 任命 is a milestone in a yearslong 成果/努力 to 保存する and 保護する places tied to events that have 形態/調整d the nation and that symbolize 国家の 負傷させるs.

"We believe that not until 黒人/ボイコット history 事柄s will 黒人/ボイコット lives and 黒人/ボイコット 団体/死体s 事柄," he said. "Through reckoning with America´s 人種差別主義者 past, we have the 適切な時期 to 傷をいやす/和解させる."

The African American Cultural 遺産 活動/戦闘 基金 has 供給するd $750,000 in 認める 基金ing since 2017 to help 救助(する) 場所/位置s important to the Till 遺産/遺物. A number of other philanthropic organizations have 与える/捧げるd several million dollars に向かって 保護 of the Till 場所/位置s.

Biden´s 布告/宣言 保護するs places that are central to the story of Emmett Till´s life and death at age 14, the 無罪放免 of his white 殺し屋s by an all-white 陪審/陪審員団 and his late mother´s activism.

In the summer of 1955, Mamie Till-Mobley put her son Emmett on a train to her native Mississippi, where he was to spend time with his uncle and his cousins. In the 夜通し hours of Aug. 28, 1955, Emmett was taken from his uncle´s home at gunpoint by two vengeful white men.

Emmett´s 申し立てられた/疑わしい 罪,犯罪? Flirting with the wife of one of his kidnappers.

Three days later, a fisherman on the Tallahatchie River discovered the 十代の少年少女´s bloated 死体 - one of his 注目する,もくろむs was detached, an ear was 行方不明の, his 長,率いる was 発射 and bashed in.

Till-Mobley 需要・要求するd that Emmett´s mutilated remains be taken 支援する to Chicago for a public, open casket funeral that was …に出席するd by tens of thousands of people. Graphic images taken of Emmett´s remains, 許可/制裁d by his mother, were published by Jet magazine and 燃料d the Civil 権利s Movement.

At the 裁判,公判 of his 殺し屋s in Mississippi, Till-Mobley bravely took the 証人席 to 反対する the perverse image of her son that 弁護 弁護士/代理人/検事s had painted for 賠審員s and 裁判,公判 選挙立会人s.

Altogether, the Till 国家の monument will 含む 5.7 acres (2.3 ヘクタールs) of land and two historic buildings. The Mississippi 場所/位置s are Graball 上陸, the 位置/汚点/見つけ出す where Emmett´s 団体/死体 was pulled from the Tallahatchie River just outside of Glendora, Mississippi, and the Tallahatchie 郡 Second 地区 Courthouse in Sumner, Mississippi, where Emmett´s 殺し屋s were tried.

At Graball 上陸, a 記念の 調印する 任命する/導入するd in 2008 had been 繰り返して stolen and was riddled with 弾丸s. An インチ-厚い bulletproof 調印する was 築くd at the 場所/位置 in October 2019.

The Illinois 場所/位置 is Roberts 寺 Church of God in Christ in Chicago, where Emmett´s funeral was held in September 1955.

Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who 初めは introduced the bipartisan 法律制定 to federally 認める and 保護する Roberts 寺, 公式文書,認めるd the church's importance to the history of Chicago and the nation.

"It´s past time we 認める how 国家の monuments can not only teach us about our history - but 刺激する us to build a more just 未来," the Democratic 上院議員 said in a 声明.

Mississippi 明言する/公表する Sen. David Jordan, 90, was a freshman at Mississippi Valley 明言する/公表する College in 1955 when he …に出席するd part of the 裁判,公判 of the two men 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金d with 殺人,大当り Emmett. As a 明言する/公表する 上院議員 for the past 30 years, Jordan, who is 黒人/ボイコット, spearheaded fundraising for a statue of Emmett Till that was 献身的な last year in Greenwood, Mississippi, a few miles from where the 十代の少年少女 was 誘拐するd.

On Tuesday, Jordan 賞賛するd Biden for creating the Till 国家の monument.

"It´s one of the greatest 栄誉(を受ける)s that a 大統領,/社長 could 支払う/賃金 to a person, 14, who lost his life in Mississippi that´s created a movement that changed America," Jordan told the AP.

Daphne Chamberlain, a history professor at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, said Emmett's 残虐な 殺人,大当り continues to resonate in racial 司法(官) 問題/発行するs of today.

"Over the past 10年間 or so, we have seen as a nation the 殺人 of young 黒人/ボイコット men like Trayvon ツバメ, Tamir Rice, Tyre Nichols in Memphis, (and) Ahmaud Arbery," she said. "In each of these instances, what we have also seen is the bravery of the mothers in coming to the 最前部 and speaking out against what happened to their sons, but also making sure that they stayed the course in 追求するing 司法(官)."

The Till 国家の monument joins dozens of federally 認めるd 目印s, buildings and other places in the 深い South, in the north and out west that 代表する historic al events and 悲劇s from the Civil 権利s Movement. For example, in Atlanta, 場所/位置s 代表するing the life and 遺産/遺物 of the Rev. ツバメ Luther King Jr., 含むing his birth home and Ebenezer Baptist Church, are all part of the 国家の Park Service.

The 任命 often 要求するs public and 私的な (独立の)存在s to work together on developing 解釈/通訳 中心s at each of the 場所/位置s, so that anyone who visits can understand the 場所/位置´s significance. The 雇うing of park 特別奇襲隊員s is supported through 共同s with the 国家の Park 創立/基礎, the park service´s 公式の/役人 nonprofit, and the 国家の Parks 自然保護 協会.

ますます, the park service 含むs 場所/位置s "that are part of the arc of 司法(官) in this country, both telling where we´ve come from, how far we´ve come, and 率直に, how far we have to still go," said Will Shafroth, the 大統領,/社長 and CEO of the 国家の Park 創立/基礎.

For Parker, who was 16 years old when he 証言,証人/目撃するd Emmett´s 誘拐, the Till monument 布告/宣言 begins to 解除する the 負わせる of 外傷/ショック that he has carried for most of his life. In an interview with the AP ahead of Tuesday's White House event, Parker 反映するd on the 10年間s-long fight to portray Emmett and his story in a proper light.

"I´ve been 苦しむing for all these years of how they´ve portrayed him - I still を取り引きする that," Parker, 84, said of his cousin Emmett.

"The truth should carry itself, but it doesn´t have wings. You have to put some wings on it."
