American cyclist Chloe Dygert 打ち勝つs 傷害s, dark days to make another world 肩書を与える run

Chloe Dygert´s career could have ended at the 底(に届く) of an Italian ravine, where the American cyclist had been racing for a world 選手権 with an 注目する,もくろむ on Olympic gold before 衝突する/食い違うing with a guardrail and 支えるing 破滅的な 脚 傷害s.

Her 復帰 to the 最高の,を越す of the sport has been daunting.

Dygert needed several 一連の会議、交渉/完成するs of 外科 to 修理 the 損失. She was waylaid by the Epstein-Barr ウイルス, which left her fighting extreme 疲労,(軍の)雑役. She had heart 外科 last 落ちる to 扱う/治療する supraventricular tachycardia, an irregularly 急速な/放蕩な heartbeat. And this spring, another training 衝突,墜落 took her off the bike again.

She is nothing if not resilient. Yet it's hardly surprising that there were moments the past three years when Dygert, perhaps the most talented American rider of her 世代, thought about giving up - on the bike and in life.

"What I 肉体的に had to go through for the 傷害 itself, then mentally what I had to go through - all the personal things I won't go into - my life at times did not 事柄 to me," Dygert told The Associated 圧力(をかける) in an interview. "I didn´t care if I was alive. I did not care about things. People don't see and understand, and I can say the same thing: I see people with 傷害s and things going on, and I can't understand what they're going through.

"So now," Dygert continued, "when I'm able to come 支援する and race and step on a podium and look at a goal, or winning 国家のs, it's like, they 事柄 so much to me. ... It just makes me so proud and excited for myself."

Dygert spoke by phone from Belgium, where the 2019 world time 裁判,公判 支持する/優勝者 is finishing her 準備s for this year's worlds, held over a 10-day stretch beginning Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland.

It's the first time the UCI, the 治める/統治するing 団体/死体 for cycling, will 持つ/拘留する nearly all of its 選手権s in one place, and it will make for a busy stretch for the 26-year-old from Indiana. Dygert will compete in the velodrome in the 跡をつける cycling events, then 長,率いる outside for the road race and time 裁判,公判, where the U.S. c hamp will be の中で the favorites to 勝利,勝つ gold.

Just like she was in Imola, Italy.

Dygert hoped the 2020 worlds would be a springboard toward a golden Tokyo Olympics, and she was 井戸/弁護士席 ahead of the 主要な pace when her bike wiggled on a 急速な/放蕩な 権利-手渡す turn. Dygert 衝突,墜落d into the guardrail and skidded 負かす/撃墜する a 法外な grassy pitch, and the gash to her thigh resulted in 広範囲にわたる 血 loss.

It took Dygert nine months before she was 十分に 回復するd to ride again. And while Dygert was able to compete at the Summer Games, which had been 押し進めるd 支援する to 2021, she 認めるs now that she was nowhere 近づく her best, even after helping the Americans 勝利,勝つ bronze in the team 追跡.

"My 団体/死体 was far from 存在 anywhere の近くに to 存在 競争の激しい," Dygert said. "That was obvious."

Afterward, Dygert turned her 焦点(を合わせる) toward the Paris Games, now いっそう少なく than a year away. But those 準備s have been hamstrung by Epstein-Barr, the heart 手続き to 扱う/治療する a 条件 she had dealt with for a 10年間 and another 衝突,墜落 while at a team (軍の)野営地,陣営 in Europe that left her fearful of a broken femur; nothing was broken but she was off the bike until March.

That made her 業績/成果 last month at U.S. 選手権s all the more impressive: She roared over the roads 近づく Nashville, Tennessee, winning both the road race and time 裁判,公判.

Throw in podium finishes at the Vuelta a Burgos Feminina, a 行う/開催する/段階 勝利,勝つ at the RideLondon Classique and more podium finishes at the prestigious Giro Donne, and Dygert again is の中で the favorites to land on the podium at worlds.

"I feel like there were moments where, `I hate cy 粘着する and I´m never riding a bike again,'" Dygert said, "but I don't think there was ever a 疑問 I'd continue. More the 疑問: `Will I be 支援する at my level? Will I be 競争の激しい again?´"

As much as anything, those are the thoughts that led Dygert to some dark places the past few years.

"It's crazy to think about it now," she said, "but life was just not 承認する. It was not."

Mental health の中で Olympic 競技者s has become an important 問題/発行する in 最近の years. Simone 胆汁s has been outspoken ever since the Tokyo Games, where she dealt with the "twisties" - a mental 封鎖する where 体操教師(選手)s can lose 跡をつける of where they are in 空中. Caeleb Dressel walked away in the middle of last year's swimming worlds because of the 圧力 and 強調する/ストレス, and fellow swimmer Adam Peaty is taking an 延長するd break to work on with his own mental health.

Then there is cycling.

At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, Dygert was on the same 追跡 team with Kelly Catlin, helping the U.S. 勝利,勝つ a silver メダル. Three years later, after struggling with 不景気 and one failed 自殺 試みる/企てる, Catlin was 設立する dead in her Stanford 住居.

"Everybody puts on such a 前線," Dygert explained. "When I think about Kelly and the 状況/情勢, what that was and what that meant for her family, for her チーム仲間s, for the world, it's like - it's not like, `I can´t do that and be like Kelly,' but the 外傷/ショック that 原因(となる)d for everyone around us, I think that was a 抱擁する factor. My life does 事柄. I do 事柄 to people."

Dygert believes she is in a better place these days. Her fitness is not yet where she wants to be, but the results show she's on the 権利 跡をつける. 楽観主義 abounds not only for worlds but the Paris Games.

"I would never take anything that's happened in my life 支援する. It's made me so 堅い," Dygert said. "I don't know how to explain it, but it's made me a better person, not for any other 推論する/理由 than just the compassion and maybe sympathy I have for a person or someone else. My 見通し on things. It's made me such a better person on and off the bike.

"It's all part of God's 計画(する)," she 追加するd. "As much as I didn't agree with it at the time, it was part of the 計画(する)."
