Sodexo cafeteria 労働者s to 回復する health 利益s

WASHINGTON (AP) ― Many 従業員s who already have health 保険 worry they'll 支払う/賃金 a price for 大統領 Barack Obama's 精密検査する. But for 労働者s at one major company those 恐れるs appear to be 緩和.

Food service 巨大(な) Sodexo 突然に 逆転するd course Thursday after bumping thousands of college cafeteria 労働者s from its health 計画(する) earlier this year and casting 非難する on the health care 法律.

Julie Peterson, Sodexo's 副/悪徳行為 大統領,/社長 for 利益s, said the company will make changes for next year to 回復する 適格(性) for many of those 影響する/感情d.

Pemberton 作品 more than 40 hours a week during the academic year. That gave her 接近 to health care on the 職業 until her 雇用者 changed the 支配するs ahead of new ニュース報道 必要物/必要条件s under 大統領 Barack Obama?s health care 法律. Although Sodexo says the 逆転 was part of a 基準 review of major 政策 決定/判定勝ち(する)s, the company also 直面するd a union 組織するing 運動 and campus 抗議するs.

経済学者s say it may be getting harder for 雇用者s to 削減(する) 利益s.

"We are in an 環境 now with 落ちるing 失業率s," said Paul Fronstin of the nonpartisan 従業員 利益 研究 学校/設ける. "In some 事例/患者s 雇用者s will be able to do that without losing 利益s, but in others not."

の中で those who lost their ニュース報道 through Sodexo this year ― and may now get it 支援する ― was Julie Pemberton. She's a cashier at Curry College, a 自由主義の arts 会・原則 近づく Boston.

Pemberton puts in more than 40 hours a week during the academic year. She's 支払う/賃金ing more than $200 a month more in 賞与金s since she switched to a 計画(する) from the Massachusetts health 保険 交流.

"I'm 現実に looking for a new apartment because this is just draining any 貯金 I have," said Pemberton. "I can't just keep 支払う/賃金ing and 支払う/賃金ing and 支払う/賃金ing."

UNITE HERE, a labor union trying to 組織する Sodexo 労働者s, said the company's 初期の cutback was 容易にするd by what it calls a (法などの)抜け穴 in 連邦の 規則s carrying out the health 法律 's 雇用者 ニュース報道 必要物/必要条件.

The Obama 行政 says any fault is with the 雇用者, not the health care 法律.

French-owned Sodexo is a 多国籍の service company with U.S. (警察,軍隊などの)本部 in Maryland. It operates many college cafeterias and also 供給するs other campus services. In January, Sodexo reclassified some of its 労働者s as part-time by 普通の/平均(する)ing their hours over a 52-week calendar year. That 影響する/感情d about 5,000 of its 133,000 U.S. 従業員s.

Sodexo said it was 事実上の/代理 to 提携させる itself with the health care 法律, which 要求するs that 雇用者s with 50 or more 労働者s 申し込む/申し出 ニュース報道 to those 普通の/平均(する)ing at least 30 hours a week, or 直面する 罰金s.

Peterson said Thursday that for 利益s 目的s, the company will now credit campus 従業員s during the summer break with the hours they would have worked during the academic year.

"We've realized we can change the way we are 決定するing 適格(性) and still remain 競争の激しい in the market," Peterson said.

The UNITE HERE union says 連邦の 支配するs 要求する colleges and universities to essentially do the same thing for their faculty 従業員s. But those 支配するs don't 適用する to 請負業者 従業員s in cafeterias.

"There is nothing in there that says 契約 労働者s are 保護するd," said union 広報担当者 Ethan Snow.

At least one college that 診察するd the 問題/発行する agreed with the cafeteria 労働者s. Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, recently 修正するd its 契約 with Sodexo to 要求する that the 従業員s be 申し込む/申し出d ニュース報道.

"Sodexo's 分類 system was not 一貫した with the practices of other vendors, or with Earlham's 政策s," said Sena Landey, 副/悪徳行為 大統領,/社長 for fina nce at the Quaker-設立するd 自由主義の arts 会・原則.

Landey said it looks like a slip-up on the part of 連邦の regulators.

"I just don't understand why you would 利益 faculty and not those on the lower end of the 支払う/賃金 規模," Landey said. "I don't see the logic in it."

The 委任統治(領) that larger 雇用者s 供給する health ニュース報道 is one of the most 複雑にするd parts of the health care 法律. 国会議員s ーするつもりであるd it おもに as a 保護(する)/緊急輸入制限 against companies 転換ing their 伝統的な 責任/義務 for health 保険 to taxpayers.

But 雇用者s across a 範囲 of 産業s have 特記する/引用するd the 委任統治(領) as justification for everything from 限界ing 労働者s' hours to 規模ing 支援する ニュース報道 for spouses. 支持者s of the 法律 say the 必要物/必要条件 will have a ごくわずかの 衝撃 since more than 90 パーセント of larger 雇用者s already 供給する ニュース報道.

初めは scheduled to 施行される this year, the 委任統治(領) has been 延期するd twice. Companies with 100 or more 労働者s must 従う starting next year, while 商売/仕事s with 50 to 99 従業員s have until 2016. Smaller companies are 免除された.

The 法律 also 要求するs individuals to carry 保険 or 危険 罰金s, and that 準備/条項 took 影響 this year.

On another 問題/発行する, Sodexo and the White House are 同盟(する)s. This spring, the company earned 公式の/役人 承認 by 誓約(する)ing to 追加する more nutritious 選択s to its vending and K-12 lunchroom programs in support of first lady Michelle Obama's (選挙などの)運動をする to 減ずる childhood obesity.
