The argument became so 緊張した that the 操縦するs of the Aug. 24 fight コースを変えるd the Boeing 737 to Chicago. An AP story about the 出来事/事件 started a 幅の広い public discussion of whether 乗客s should be 許すd to recline. In the days that followed, two other flights were コースを変えるd because of 類似の 不一致s.

Beach, 48, reached out to the AP to 明らかにする a few things about the episode, まず第一に/本来 that he 最初 従うd with flight attendant 指示/教授/教育s to 除去する the 装置.

For the 記録,記録的な/記録する, he said, he never reclines his seat.

"You have the 権利, but it seems rude to do it," said Beach, who is 6-foot-1.

The 論争 occurred on the final 脚 of Beach's trip 支援する to his home 近づく Denver. After returning to the U.S. from a 商売/仕事 trip to Moscow, he went on 代替要員,物 for an earlier flight for the 脚 from Newark, New Jersey, to Denver and was given a middle seat. When the jet was 空輸の, Beach took out his laptop to review a 契約 for his company, which develops waste 再生利用するing 施設s, まず第一に/本来 in Russia. He used the 膝 Defender ― a Christmas gift a few years ago from his wife ― to 妨げる the woman in 前線 from reclining.

U.S. 航空機によるs 禁じる use of the 膝 Defender, but the 装置s are not 違法な.

"I put them in maybe a third of the time. Usually, the person in 前線 tries (to recline) their seat a couple of times, and then they forget about it," Beach said. The 装置 comes with a 儀礼 card to tell 乗客s that you've 封鎖するd them, but he doesn't use it.

"I'd rather just 肉親,親類d of let them think the seat is broken, rather than start a 対決," he said.

Beach, who said he 飛行機で行くs 75,000 to 100,000 miles a year, wasn't so lucky this time.

When the flight attendants (機の)カム through the cabin to serve (水以外の)飲料s, the woman said her seat was broken. That's when Beach told one of them about the 膝 Defender. The flight attendant asked him to 除去する the 装置, and Beach said he did.

"As soon as I started to move it, she just 十分な 軍隊, 爆破d the seat 支援する, 権利 on the laptop, almost 粉々にするd the 審査する. My laptop (機の)カム 飛行機で行くing の上に my (競技場の)トラック一周," he said.

Beach complained, 説 that he couldn't work like that, but the flight attendant 知らせるd him that the woman had the 権利 to recline. Both 乗客s were sitting in 部隊d's Economy 加える section, which 申し込む/申し出s 4 more インチs of legroom than the 残り/休憩(する) of coach.

His reply: "You asked me to let her recline a few インチs, and she just took 100 パーセント of it."

That's when Beach's 怒り/怒る boiled over. He said he 押し進めるd the woman's seat 今後 and put the 膝 Defender 支援する in. The woman stood up and threw a cup of soda ― not water, as 以前 報告(する)/憶測d ― at him.

"It was really just surreal and shocking. Did that just happen?" Beach 解任するs. "I said, 'I hope you brought your checkbook because you just threw your Sprite all over my $2,000 laptop.'"

The flight attendant stepped in quickl y and moved the woman to another seat.

"I said a lot of things I shouldn't have said to the flight attendant: some bad words, what's your 指名する and 'I can't believe you're 扱う/治療するing me like this,'" he 解任するd.

The 操縦するs then changed course for Chicago ― a 決定/判定勝ち(する) that Beach said "amazed" him.

"The 計画(する) was dead 静かな for the 残り/休憩(する) of that flight," he 追加するd. "Nobody said a word."

Ira Goldman, who invented the 膝 Defender, said the 乗客s on the other コースを変えるd flights got upset after their 膝s and 長,率いる were 攻撃する,衝突する by reclining seats. He said 航空機によるs are "trying to wish this problem away."

His 解答: 任命する/導入する seats that slide 今後 within a 爆撃する to recline or to 許す the use of his 装置, which has been sold since 2003.

"They're selling the same space twice ― to me to sit 負かす/撃墜する and then 招待するing people to put their seat 支援するs there 同様に," he said.

When the 計画(する) landed in Chicago, police 護衛するd Beach and the woman off. Neither police, nor the 航空機による or the Transportation 安全 行政 has 解放(する)d any (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) about the 乗客 seated in 前線 of Beach.

No 犯罪の or civil 告発(する),告訴(する)/料金s were brought against them, but 部隊d would not let them continue on to Denver.

Beach says he spent the night at an airport hotel and then caught a flight home the next morning. He flew Spirit 航空機によるs. It has no reclining seats.
