海軍: Self-guided 無人の patrol boats make debut
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ― Self-guided 無人の patrol boats that can leave the ships they're 保護するing and 群れている and attack 可能性のある 脅しs on the water could join the 海軍's (n)艦隊／(a)素早い within a year, 弁護 公式の／役人s say, 追加するing the new 科学（工学）技術 could one day help stop attacks like the deadly 2000 爆破 of the USS Cole off Yemen.
The Arlington-based Office of 海軍の 研究 said it 首尾よく 論証するd the 自治権のある 群れている boat 科学（工学）技術 over two weeks in August on the James River 近づく Fort Eustis in Virginia ― not far from one of the 海軍's largest (n)艦隊／(a)素早い 集中 areas. In the demonstrations, as many as 13 small 無人の patrol boats were 護衛するing a high-value 海軍 ship. Then as many as eight of the self-guided 大型船s broke off and 群れているd around a 脅し when a ship playing the part of an enemy 大型船 was （悪事，秘密などを）発見するd.
Robert Brizzolara, program 経営者／支配人 at the Office of 海軍の 研究, said that the boats decide for themselves what movements to make once they're 警報d to a 脅し and work together to encircle or 封鎖する the path of an …に反対するing 大型船, depending on that 大型船's movements and those of other 大型船s in the area.
The rigid-船体 inflatable patrol boats can also 解雇する／砲火／射撃 .50 caliber machine guns if called upon to do so. "I never want to see the USS Cole happen again," said 後部 Adm. Matthew Klunder, 長，指導者 of 海軍の 研究, speaking about the attack by a small boat with 爆発性のs that killed 17 sailors and 負傷させるd 39. "I can tell you the systems we just put out on the water would've 妨げるd the Cole."

Klunder said the 科学（工学）技術 should be rolled out to (n)艦隊／(a)素早い 指揮官s within a year. He said the parts for the small, transportable 道具 cost about $2,000 and can be 適用するd to 存在するing patrol boats, which are already 流布している at 海軍 取り付け・設備s and are 船内に many large 軍艦s.
The 海軍 said some of the system's 構成要素s were adapted for from 科学（工学）技術 初めは developed by 航空宇宙局 for the 火星 Rover spaceflight programs. What made the August demonstration so important is that it showed that 非常に／多数の boats could 調整する with each other, Klunder 公式文書，認めるd.
