法案 Frenzel, ex-Minnesota 下院議員, dies at 86

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Former Minnesota Rep. William "法案" Frenzel, a 赤字 強硬派 who spent 20 years in the U.S. House and later 首尾よく helped ロビー for the North American 解放する/自由な 貿易(する) 協定, has died after a fight with 癌. He was 86.

Frenzel, a 穏健な 共和国の/共和党の who advised both 共和国の/共和党の and Democratic 大統領,/社長s on 経済的な 事柄s, died Monday at his home in McLean, Virginia, によれば D.J. Nordquist, spokeswoman for the Brookings 会・原則, the Washington-based think 戦車/タンク where Frenzel had been a guest scholar since 1991. Nordquist said she spoke with Frenzel's family 早期に Monday.

Frenzel was re-elected nine times after winning his first 選挙 in 1970 to 代表する the 明言する/公表する's 3rd 地区 in the Minneapolis 郊外s. Known for his crusade to balance the 予算, Frenzel was the House's 主要な/長/主犯 共和国の/共和党の 経済的な 広報担当者, the 最高位の 少数,小数派 member on the House 予算 委員会 and sat on the powerful House Ways and Means 委員会.

But he also was known for his famous "Frenzel doodles," which he would draw during 会合s. After deciding not to 捜し出す re-選挙 in 1990, he became a special 助言者 on NAFTA to 大統領 法案 Clinton ― who said in a speech that he planned to でっちあげる,人を罪に陥れる a doodle that Frenzel sent him on NAFTA after the 法律制定 passed in 1993.

Last month, Frenzel was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle ― the highest 栄誉(を受ける) Mexico 会談するs on foreigners ― for his work on NAFTA, which 拡大するd cross-国境 商業 の中で Canada, the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs and Mexico. In 2000, Frenze l was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver 星/主役にする by the emperor of Japan for his 成果/努力s to 前進する 貿易(する) and the U.S.-Japanese 関係.

Democratic Gov. 示す Dayton commended Frenzel's 知能, friendliness and humanity, 説 he "really served our 明言する/公表する and the nation as one of the 主要な 税金 専門家s in the U.S. House."

A St. Paul native, Frenzel received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Dartmouth College. He was a 海軍の officer during the Korean War and served eight years in the Minnesota House before 存在 elected to 議会.

Former Democratic Rep. Tim Penny of Minnesota, who served with Frenzel in the House and also 非難するd the 予算 赤字, called Frenzel a 助言者.
