示す 立ち往生させる, prize-winning poet, dies in NY at 80
NEW YORK (AP) ― 示す 立ち往生させる, a Pulitzer Prize 勝利者 and former U.S. poet laureate 広範囲にわたって 賞賛するd for his concentrated, elegiac 詩(を作る), has died. He was 80.
立ち往生させる, whose 作品 were translated into more than 30 languages, died Saturday morning at his daughter's New York home from liposarcoma that had spread throughout his 団体/死体, just weeks after entering hospice care, said his daughter, Jessica 立ち往生させる.
"He was a funny, elegant, generous and brilliant man," she said of her father. "A man who lived to work and to be with his friends and the people he loved."
A 独特の presence even at the end of his life, with his lean build, white hair and 一連の会議、交渉/完成する glasses, 立ち往生させる received 非常に/多数の 栄誉(を受ける)s, 含むing the Pulitzer in 1999 for "Blizzard of One," a gold メダル from the American 学院 of Arts and Letters and a 国家の 調書をとる/予約する Award 指名/任命 this 落ちる for "Collected Poems." Author of more than a dozen 調書をとる/予約するs of poetry and several 作品 of prose, 立ち往生させる was haunted by absence, loss and passage of time from the beginning of his career, いつかs peering just beyond the contents of the page and wondering what, if anything, was out there. Some of his most famous lines appear in "Keeping Things Whole," a poem from "Sleeping With One 注目する,もくろむ Open," his 1964 debut :

立ち往生させる also wrote children's 調書をとる/予約するs and art 批評, helped edit several poetry anthologies and translated the Italian poet Rafael Alberti. He was a committed doubter, even about poetry. He went through 時折の periods when he stopped 令状ing 詩(を作る) and once quarreled with his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, because he considered his 2012 collection "Almost Invisible" to be prose, not poetry.
"I don't make the same 需要・要求するs of prose as I do with poetry," he told the AP. "You don't have to worry about 支えるing a cadence. You don't have to worry about the 明確な/細部 creativity of each word."
He was born in Prince Edward Island in Canada, his mother a painter, his father a salesman whose work led to the family living in many 地元のs from Peru to Cleveland. 立ち往生させる thought of himself first as an artist, and would 解任する his adolescent poetry as "feverish 試みる/企てるs to put 'my feelings' on paper, and little more."
He majored in art at Yale University, but felt "stifled" and by 卒業生(する) school had decided he was better ふさわしい for 令状ing, with Philip Larkin and Thomas Hardy の中で the poets he was reading. He received a master's degree from the University of Iowa's prestigious Writers' Workshop, and later taught at Iowa, Columbia University and the University of Chicago の中で other schools.
The most 深遠な absence in his work was that of god, his atheism passed 負かす/撃墜する to him from his father, who had terrif ied his young son with stories of 異端者s 燃やすd at the 火刑/賭ける. In "Poem After the Last Seven Words," from the 2006 collection "Man and Camel," 立ち往生させる imagined how it felt "To open the dictionary of the Beyond and discover what one 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd, that the only word in it is nothing."
"I 港/避難所't met God and I 港/避難所't been to heaven, so I'm skeptical," he told the AP. "Nobody's come 支援する to me to tell me they're having a 広大な/多数の/重要な time in heaven and that they've seen God, although there are a lot of people (人命などを)奪う,主張するing that God is telling them what to do. I have no idea how God 会談 to them. Maybe they're getting secret emails."
His daughter said Saturday her father 設立する 慰安 in art.
"We weren't 宗教的な people, but we worshipped at the foot of culture," she said. "He was always an artist."
Besides his daughter, 示す 立ち往生させる is 生き残るd by a sister and a son, Thomas, who lives in Seattle.
