Voytek Chachlowski, 55, who (機の)カム to the U.S. from Poland 20 years ago, said he could easily relate to 14-year-old Victoria Confino's story of living in cramped 条件s. When he first arrived he had to "株 two rooms and one bathroom with seven people."

The program is one of many immersive experiences at the museum 位置を示すd in a 回復するd 4-story tenement building on the Lower East 味方する that housed 7,000 working class 移民,移住(する)s between 1863 and 1935.

Seven of the 初めの apartments are 回復するd, 完全にする with 淡褐色 furnishings, peeling wallpaper and laundry strung over a coal stove; three others have been 故意に left as they were when the building was 非難するd in 1935.

Kathleen Fletcher played Victoria, whose ユダヤ人の family (機の)カム from Greece, for the visiting group from the International 救助(する) 委員会, an organization that helps 難民s 再定住させる. She's one of 15 "衣装d interpreters" who bring to life the stories of the tenement's 居住(者)s.

"It gets to the heart of the museum 使節団 most すぐに, 明らかにする/漏らすing the challenges of people of the past, 現在の and 未来," she said.

Jennifer Call, the 救助(する) 委員会's family education 調整者/コーディネーター, said her groups いつかs start off shy but that the interactive experience gets them talking. "Field trips like this really bring the class together," she said.

Before visiting Victoria's first-床に打ち倒す apartment along a 薄暗い, dilapidated hallway, the group gathered in a 訪問者's 中心 classroom. There a museum 労働者 gave a short history on Victoria's family and her 職業 sewing aprons and introduced them to unfamiliar vocabulary words like "tenement" and "homesick" before 招待するing them to 株 their own stories. Later they 再召集するd in the classroom for その上の discussion on topics that touched on 宗教的な freedom and education.

The classes are adjusted によれば the level of English proficiency but always 焦点(を合わせる) on the museum's 使節団 of connecting 移民,移住(する)s of today with 移民,移住(する)s of the past. They're popular with dozens of organizations and language schools that 申し込む/申し出 English as a second language. The adult program recently 拡大するd to 含む high school and middle school students. The museum 申し込む/申し出s 150 workshops and 普通の/平均(する)s about 1,700 関係者s a year.

Victoria's story is one of six interactive experiences at the museum, each 供給するing an 適切な時期 to discuss social and 市民の 問題/発行するs of the day that still resonate today.

They 含む the 1935 apartment of Rosaria and Adolpho Baldizzi who (機の)カム to the U.S. during the 高さ of the first 移民/移住 制限s. Discussions いつかs 焦点(を合わせる) on what it means to be "American." Or 訪問者s can choose to go to the 1897 apartment of the Levine family who ran a small 衣料品 factory in their home. They later talk about the 条件s in factories and the larger 問題/発行する of 許容できる working 条件s.

Raul Betancourt, 39, like others …に出席するing the workshop, thought life for 移民,移住(する)s was easier today. He quickly 設立する an apartment through the Internet after coming from Venezuela two months ago.
