Louisiana's 上院 race 負かす/撃墜する to runoff Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ― In the last 選挙 of the 2014 midterms, Louisiana 投票者s Saturday decide the political 運命/宿命 of Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who is struggling to 勝利,勝つ a fourth 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 against a wave of GOP 伸び(る)s across Southern 明言する/公表するs.

共和国の/共和党の Rep. 法案 Cassidy was the 前線-走者 in the runoff 選挙, after portraying his 立候補 as a way for 投票者s to cast another 投票(する) against the 政策s of 大統領 Barack Obama, who is 高度に 人気がない in Louisiana.

If Cassidy is successful, his 勝利,勝つ would 追加する a ninth 上院 seat 好転 for the GOP, 押し進めるing their new 大多数 to 54 seats in January and costing 民主党員s their last 上院 seat in the 深い South.

投票s 公式に の近くにd at 8 p.m. 地元の time.

Landrieu, 59, whose family has been a New Orleans political 王朝, fought throughout her (選挙などの)運動をする to make the 選挙 a 国民投票 on her own 業績/成果 rather than on the 大統領,/社長. But her 投票(する)s for Obama's 署名 health care 精密検査する and other 政策s supported by the 大統領,/社長 were 大打撃を与えるd by Cassidy, who 繰り返して said the Democratic 現職の 投票(する)d with Obama "97 パーセント of the time."

Cassidy, 57, a Baton 紅 doctor, stuck to the 近づく-singular message, after it worked for 共和国の/共和党のs who 追い出すd Democratic 現職のs earlier this year in North Carolina, Arkansas and Alaska. He spent little time on the (選挙などの)運動をする 追跡する in the runoff, as his (選挙などの)運動をする sought to keep him from making any missteps, while Landrieu crisscrossed the 明言する/公表する in 外見s as she tried to hang の上に her 職業.

Cassidy skipped public events in 前進する of his 地位,任命する-選挙 party. But as 投票者s went to the 投票s, Landrieu stood street-味方する in New Orleans, smiling and waving to 運転者s as about a dozen 支持者s danced and waved 調印するs.

"I'm very proud of the (選挙などの)運動をする that we've run, trying to stay 焦点(を合わせる)d on the 問題/発行するs that 事柄 to the people of Louisiana. His team has just tried to make this a 国民投票. 井戸/弁護士席, that 国民投票 (機の)カム and went. It's over with," Landrieu said.

She 追加するd that she hoped 投票者s cast 投票(する)s for a 上院議員 who has "配達するd for this 地域 time and time again."

But 試みる/企てるs by Land rieu's (選挙などの)運動をする to 答える/応じる to the Cassidy 批評 and 形態/調整 a different 焦点(を合わせる) for the runoff were 土台を崩すd by 国家の 民主党員s' 近づく total abandonment of the 上院議員. Of every dollar spent by outside groups since Louisiana's 上院 race 長,率いるd into its final month, 97 cents were paid to help Cassidy.

Landrieu was 大部分は left to fend for herself, with 援助 from individual 同僚s and the 明言する/公表する Democratic Party as her only 上げる.

Her party's lackluster 業績/成果 国家的に on Nov. 4 土台を崩すd the central 主題 of Landrieu's (選挙などの)運動をする, that her clout was invaluable to Louisiana. With 共和国の/共和党のs 伸び(る)ing 支配(する)/統制する of the 上院 in the new year, Landrieu would lose her energy 委員会 (議長,司会の)地位,能力.

A last-溝へはまらせる/不時着する 試みる/企てる to show that she could break through congressional gridlock and pass the long-延期するd Keystone XL pipeline fell one 投票(する) short of the support she needed from her own party to pass, 取引,協定ing another blow to Landrieu's (選挙などの)運動をする narrative.

As the underdog in the race, Landrieu lobbed a 一連の attacks against Cassidy, 告発する/非難するing him of 存在 unfit for office, 最高潮の場面ing his ぎこちない speaking style and 絵 him as taking repeated 投票(する)s against Louisiana's 利益/興味s.

In the final days, Landrieu 中心d her 批評 on Cassidy's work as a doctor for the LSU hospital system that cares for the poor and uninsured. She said Cassidy appeared to have been paid a $20,000 taxpayer-基金d 年次の salary for doing little or no work, and she 示唆するd he falsified the few timesheets that LSU had produced for the 下院議員's work. Cassidy 投げ上げる/ボディチェックするd aside the 批評 as a desperate 試みる/企てる to 生き返らせる Landrieu's 滞るing (選挙などの)運動をする and said he did nothing wrong.

The race has been the most expensive 上院 選挙 in Louisiana history, with $ 30 million spent by the two 候補者s and millions more from 国家の organizations. Landrieu raised at least $5 million more than Cassidy, but she also spent at a heavier clip for the Nov. 4 最初の/主要な, leaving her with より小数の 資源s than her 挑戦者 in 前進する of Saturday.
