At 気候 会談, African nations 誓約(する) to 回復する forests

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ― Tree by tree, more than a dozen African 政府s 誓約(する)d to 回復する the continent's natural forests at the 国際連合 気候 会談 on Sunday.

The earth has lost more than half its forests over the course of human history, によれば the World 資源s 学校/設ける. The 森林伐採 of the world's 熱帯の forests has 与える/捧げるd to 気候 change by producing up to 15 パーセント of 全世界の 炭素 放出/発行s, the organization said.

The AFR100 率先 is a 誓約(する) by African nations to 回復する 100 million ヘクタールs (about 386,000 square miles) of forest by 2030, によれば the organization.

"As the world (1)偽造する/(2)徐々に進むs a 気候 協定 in Paris, African countries ― which 耐える the least historic 責任/義務 for 気候 change ― are showing leadership with ambitious 誓約(する)s to 回復する land," said Andrew Steer, 大統領,/社長 and CEO of the World 資源s 学校/設ける.

Wanjira Mathai, daughter of the late Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, 述べるd the AFR100 forest 復古/返還 事業/計画(する) as 前例のない.

"I have seen 復古/返還 in communities both large and small across Africa, but the 約束 of a continent-wide movement is truly 奮起させるing," said Mathai, chairwoman of the Green Belt Movement 設立するd by her mother. "回復するing landscapes will 権力を与える and 濃厚にする 田舎の communities while 供給するing 石油精製 利益s to those in cities. Everybody 勝利,勝つs. "

During the 全世界の Landscapes 会議 at the U.N. 気候 会談, the World Bank and the German 政府 and other partners, 始める,決める aside more than $1 billion in 開発 基金ing and $540 million in 私的な 基金ing for the African reforestation.

More than a dozen African countries, 含むing Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, have 誓約(する)d millions of acres to the 事業/計画(する). West African nations along the Sahara 砂漠 have also 誓約(する)d to 工場/植物 more trees to stop the ever encr oaching 砂漠 from destroying more arable land.

"回復するing our landscapes brings 繁栄, 安全 and 適切な時期," said Vincent Biruta, Rwanda's 大臣 of Natural 資源s. "With forest landscape 復古/返還 we've seen 農業の 産する/生じるs rise and 農業者s in our 田舎の communities diversify their 暮らしs and 改善する their 井戸/弁護士席-存在. Forest landscape 復古/返還 is not just an 環境の 戦略, it is an 経済的な and social 開発 戦略 同様に."

の中で the 誓約(する)ing countries is Madagascar, where the island forests are home to some of the world's most unique 工場/植物s and animals, all under 脅し from 森林伐採. 衛星 images of the island show forests that have been 削除するd and 燃やすd, によれば the World 野性生物 創立/基礎.

To 宇宙飛行士s 観察するing from space, Madagascar seems like an island bleeding into the ocean as its rich red 国/地域, eroded by 10年間s of unregulated logging, runs into the ocean, leaving behind 噴火口,クレーターd land unfit for farming, によれば the 創立/基礎.

Some of the countries that are home to the Congo 水盤/入り江, which conservationists call the earth's second 始める,決める of 肺s, after the アマゾン 水盤/入り江, have also 調印するd up to the 事業/計画(する). The Democratic 共和国 of Congo has 誓約(する)d 8 million ヘクタールs (20 million acres) to the 復古/返還 事業/計画(する).

But these 誓約(する)s may 直面する challenges from the 全世界の 木材/素質 産業, 悪化させるd by 違法な logging, which is the biggest 原因(となる) of 森林伐採, によれば 環境の 保護 group Greenpeace. にもかかわらず 法律s to 妨げる this, it is has never been easier to 不法に chop 負かす/撃墜する trees in the Congo 水盤/入り江, the group said.

汚職 in the Congo 水盤/入り江 地域 has 土台を崩すd 改革(する)s to the 木材/素質 産業, 特に in the Democratic 共和国 of Congo, where 保護する ed 野性生物 areas are ますます 乱すd, によれば a Greenpeace 報告(する)/憶測 published earlier this year.

If this 率先 後継するs, it would 改善する the lives of people living around forests and to the ecosystem as a whole, said Victorine Che Thoener, leader of Greenpeace's Congo 水盤/入り江 事業/計画(する).

"But many of these African countries make these 誓約(する)s in the hope that they will receive 基金ing," said Che Thoener, who is based in Cameroon, one of the Congo 水盤/入り江 countries that have 調印するd the 誓約(する). "There's a lot of talk, but not a lot of 活動/戦闘 on the ground."

類似の 自然保護 成果/努力s have failed because they do not 含む the 権利 training and 道具s to 監視する the 進歩, said Che Thoener.

認めるing these challenges, the World 研究 学校/設ける is working on a 監視するing 事業/計画(する) that 含むs 衛星 and ground-level 観察, said Sean De Witt, director of the organizations 全世界の 復古/返還 率先.
