After 15 years, last artifacts of 9/11 have been given away
NEW YORK (AP) ― Behind the barbed wire, the white minivan's 破産した／（警察が）手入れするd windows and crumpled roof hint at its story. But forklifted to this windblown 位置／汚点／見つけ出す on the John F. Kennedy International Airport tarmac, between a 閉鎖するd 727 and an 航空機 hangar, it's doubtful passing drivers notice it at all.
In the long struggle with the searing memories of 9/11, though, the 先頭's 独房監禁 presence here 示すs a small but 重要な 移行 point.
トンs of 難破 ― 新たな展開d steel beams 重さを計るing up to 40,000 続けざまに猛撃するs, chunks of 固める／コンクリート smelling of smoke, a 鎮圧するd 解雇する／砲火／射撃 engine, a dust-covered 航空機による slipper ― were 海難救助d from the World 貿易（する） 中心 場所／位置 for 保護 in the weeks after the 2001 テロリスト attacks. Now, 15 years later, this 先頭, part of a 政府 機関 モーター pool likely 避難所d from the 衝撃 in the parking garage beneath the コンビナート／複合体, is the very last artifact without a 残り／休憩（する）ing place.

When the 先頭 is （人命などを）奪う，主張するd, as soon as a few weeks from now, it will 実行する a 誓約（する） that, to move beyond 9/11 without losing sight of it, New York would 株 遺物s of that terror, along with the tales of sacrifice and 恐れる that come with them.
The 決定／判定勝ち（する） by 公式の／役人s to give away pieces of 貿易（する） 中心 難破 has been 賞賛するd and 非難するd over the years. But its 衝撃 is 否定できない.
More than 2,600 artifacts have gone to 1,585 解雇する／砲火／射撃 and police departments, schools and museums, and other nonprofit organizations in every 明言する／公表する and at least eight other countries. Each 受取人 has 誓約（する）d to use them in 記念のs or 展示（する）s 栄誉（を受ける）ing those killed on 9/11. While some have not followed through, the many that have mean it is now possible to touch a piece of September 11 during a Roman カトリック教徒 集まり in Port St. Lucie, Florida, while standing in the 影をつくる／尾行するs of Colorado's San Juan mountains, or in a park 栄誉（を受ける）ing animals in Meaford, Ontario.
"They are the 遺物s of the 破壊 and they have the same 力／強力にする in the same way as 中世 遺物s that have the 力／強力にする of the sain ts," said Harriet Senie, a professor of art history at the City University of New York and author of "記念のs to 粉々にするd Myths: Vietnam to 9/11."
"History is a vague 概念, but if you have this 有形の 反対する that was a part of this historical event, it makes it very difficult to 否定する and it also makes it possible to experience it in a very visceral way."
In the days すぐに after the attacks, it wasn't at all （疑いを）晴らす what would happen to the 難破 of the 貿易（する） 中心. It's not as if anyone had 直面するd questions of that 規模 before. There was no certainty about 正確に／まさに which artifacts, if any, should be saved.
The Port 当局 of New York & New Jersey, which owned the 貿易（する） 中心, 派遣（する）d an architect to 徹底的に捜す through the 場所／位置 and cull pieces that seemed 独特の. 捜査官／調査官s carted away others. Most of the 難破 from the 場所／位置 was scrapped or 再生利用するd. But the 機関 saved about half of 1 パーセント of the total.
It all had to go somewhere. That ended up 存在 JFK's Hangar 17, an 80,000-square-foot cavern of sheet metal left empty when tenant Tower 空気／公表する went out of 商売／仕事 in 2000.
公式の／役人s were uncertain what to do with so much 構成要素, given the emotions intertwined with it. A 裁判官 決定するd the artifacts were not evidentiary or personal, and 認可するd 寄付s to those who 約束d to care for them. But where to begin?
"It was piles and piles, probably my 高さ or higher, of steel beams," says Amy Passiak, the archivist 雇うd to catalog the artifacts and manage their 配当, 解任するing the first time she walked into the hangar in 2010. Passiak, a high school 上級の in Michigan at the time of the attacks, had been working as an 抑留する at New York's 9/11 museum, but says she was still unprepared for the scene.
"I remember going home that day and just 存在 exhausted, just from 存在 there a few hours, just 存在 emotionally exhausted and not 存在 able to comprehend the 量 of work that was going to go into the 過程. It was like, maybe a year, maybe two years. And here I am, six years later."
Passiak built a database of every item, cataloging its size and approximate 負わせる, with descriptive 公式文書，認めるs. As word spread that the Port 当局 was giving the 構成要素 away, requests 注ぐd in. Through August, the Port 当局 had 分配するd 2,629 artifacts.
Many went to 解雇する／砲火／射撃 departments, 地元の 政府s and organizations in the New York area with direct 関係 to the first responders and 労働者s who 死なせる／死ぬd when the towers fell.
"When those buildings （機の）カム 負かす／撃墜する, everybody and everything in its path was either pulverized or vaporized off the 直面する of the earth," said John Hodge of the Stephen Siller Tunnels to Towers 創立／基礎, 指名するd for his cousin, a New York firefighter killed on 9/11. In late July, the 創立／基礎 示すd the ぼんやり現れるing 終結 of Hangar 17 with a 儀式 outside before 運ぶ／漁獲高ing away an elevator モーター from the 貿易（する） 中心, a piece of the parking structure, and a 部分 of a broadcast antenna that 栄冠を与えるd the コンビナート／複合体.
"That's where the デオキシリボ核酸 is. Neither my cousin or anybody else from Squad 1 was ever 設立する, but it's in that steel," Hodge said.
But for many of the people and groups that 可決する・採択するd artifacts from the 貿易（する） 中心, the loss was more abstract. At least it started off that way.
ヒース／荒れ地 Satow, a sculptor in southern California 雇うd to design a 9/11 記念の for the plaza 前線ing Rosemead's city offices, 解任するs awkwardly scanning a 数字表示式の catalog showing beams 利用できる from the 貿易（する） 中心. Bu t hundreds of hours creating the 記念の ― a 10-foot beam cradled by 手渡すs of chrome, the palms and fingers formed from 2,976 interlocking birds 代表するing individual 犠牲者s ― left a 深い impression.
"Every individual was …に出席するd to," said Satow, his 発言する／表明する breaking five years later, as he 述べるd making the sculpture. "I just was 全く unprepared for it. But when you spend all that time seeing it as individuals it will just 難破させる you."
Satow said he purposely positioned the beam at about 注目する，もくろむ level, so people could see, touch and feel it. Others who 可決する・採択するd 貿易（する） 中心 artifacts used them to 類似の 影響.
Firefighters in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, created a 記念の in 前線 of their 駅／配置する around a small piece of 寄付するd I-beam. Many people in the town, surrounded by the San Juan mountains and the Southern Ute 保留（地）／予約, will never get to New York or Washington D.C., said David Hartman, who worked to 得る the artifact. But September 11 was his 世代's Pearl Harbor, and 存在 able to see and touch the 難破 enables 居住（者）s to 反映する on its lessons, he said.
At Flour Bluff Junior High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, a piece of 貿易（する） 中心 steel ― one of three received by the school 地区 ― is housed in a 事例／患者 近づく the 入り口 to the cafeteria. In September, it is taken out and students from the school's officer training program stand guard. Bruce Chaney, the 海軍の science 指導者 who 適用するd for the artifacts, brings another, smaller piece to his classes.
The artifact is "新たな展開d and somewhat 燃やすd. It's not pretty. I'm hoping it will make them think as they're growing up, that they have to 支払う／賃金 attention to their past," Chaney said.
Most Flour Bluff students hadn't yet been born in 2001, so the 遺物s are the の近くに st most will ever get to experiencing that day.
But the 願望（する） to touch and own history, however distant, has been around since long before this 世代, said Erika Doss, a professor of American 熟考する／考慮するs at the University of Notre Dame and author of "記念の Mania: Public Feeling in America."
She 公式文書，認めるs that after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, millions of Americans gathered と一緒に the 跡をつけるs as a train carrying his 団体／死体 made its way to Illinois. People wore 嘆く／悼むing 禁止（する）d on their 武器. They hung Lincoln's portrait in their homes. They flocked to see death masks cast from his 直面する. They 手配中の，お尋ね者 to see and touch Lincoln.
Artifacts let people grapple with 苦痛d memories. But 15 years after September 11, the dispersal of artifacts from the 貿易（する） 中心 has not 解決するd the public's 衝突d feelings about those events, now 始める，決める against continued 恐れるs of テロ行為.
"We just don't know where the events of 9/11 have led us," said Rick Sluder, 解雇する／砲火／射撃 長，指導者 in Wauseon, Ohio, which 得るd a 貿易（する） 中心 beam and, together with 隣接地の departments built a 記念の at the nearby Fulton 郡 Fairgrounds.
"A lot of people are looking at this as, is this the point of downfall or the point at which we rose above the 残り／休憩（する）, the point of resiliency?" Sluder said. "I don't think that's been 決定するd yet."
There's little 尋問, though, the emotions people 投資する in the artifacts. During the six years Passiak spent 古記録ing the 遺物s, the people 捜し出すing them would often tell her stories of the losses in their own communities ― of firefighters, or 兵士s or others ― that connected them, however tangentially, to 9/11.
In the first years, there were so many artifacts that she could easily match them wit h requesters. So when a girl at Cracker 追跡する Elementary School in Sebring, Florida, wrote that she 手配中の，お尋ね者 to help her fellow students learn about 9/11, Passiak 始める，決める aside a children's alarm clock 回復するd from a 蓄える／店 in the 貿易（する） 中心's concourse, a 燃やすd notebook, and small piece of steel, 6 インチs square.
"I felt like that 許すd a 十分な story to be told," she said.
As the piles of 構成要素 winnowed, though, it became more difficult. Most of the groups 捜し出すing artifacts 手配中の，お尋ね者 pieces they could build a narrative around. The biggest artifacts were unwieldy. By 早期に this year, there was little left except rails from the 通勤（学）者 train line that ran under the コンビナート／複合体. Items like police 巡洋艦s, whose 目的 that day were （疑いを）晴らす, 設立する takers. But unmarked 乗り物s, 匿名の／不明の but for their place in the 難破, were 最初 passed over.
When the Port 当局 shuttered the artifact program in August and padlocked Hangar 17, 公式の／役人s moved the only remaining artifact ― a Dodge Caravan with a ripped out red 内部の ― to the tarmac, uncertain of its 運命／宿命. It, too, is likely to go soon, to a group 公式の／役人s will not identify until its 使用／適用 has been 認可するd. Hangar 17, itself, may 結局 be torn 負かす／撃墜する.
Passiak moved 支援する to Michigan to start a 職業 at an art museum this month. But many of the people whose groups received 寄付s of 貿易（する） 中心 artifacts have stayed in touch with her, 延長するing 招待s to visit their 記念のs, from California to Germany.
Someday, the archivist said, she'd like to take a road trip, stopping in cities and towns along the way to see where the artifacts she once cared for have 設立する homes. She imagines she'll 認める some of them, and remember their stories. It will not 事柄 that the steel, 固める／コンクリート and other 遺物s are at 残り／休憩（する） far from l ower Manhattan. The memories they 持つ／拘留する, she is 確かな , will not soon fade.
