生き返らせるing old traditions, Arab beer brewers make their 示す

FUHEIS, Jordan (AP) ― It took gumption to 注ぐ millions of dollars into starting a brewery in an 圧倒的に イスラム教徒 country where many frown on 消費するing alcohol.

Jordanian beer 開拓する Yazan Karadsheh is now taking his next risky step, sending a first 出荷/船積み of his Carakale to the U.S., where it will compete with thousands of brands in a $22 billion-a-year (手先の)技術 beer market.

The 32-year-old Karadsheh is part of a small but growing brotherhood of Arab brewers in the Levant who want to 養育する 地元の beer-drinking cultures and compete against the brews of large companies, some of them multi-国家のs that 支配する the 地域's beer market.

Carakale is the first (手先の)技術 beer in Jordan. The West Bank already has three 独立した・無所属 breweries ― 井戸/弁護士席-設立するd 退役軍人 Taybeh, newcomer Shepherds and tiny Wise Men's Choice, made in a 地階 近づく biblical Bethlehem. Lebanese brands 含む 陸軍大佐, made at a large brew pub in the 沿岸の town of Batroun, and 961, 指名するd after the country's international dialing code. Small breweries also sprang up in イスラエル over the past 10年間.

It's a modest 復活 in a 地域 where beer-brewing traditions go 支援する to 古代の Egypt and Mesopotamia, but lay 活動停止中の for centuries.

需要・要求する is also up. 地域の beer 消費 増加するd by 44 パーセント over the past 10年間 ― though the の近くに to 4 million hectoliters (105 million gallons) guzzled in nine Arab countries and イスラエル last year 量 to a 減少(する) compared to U.S. 消費 of 234 million hectoliters (6.1 billion gallons), によれば 産業 人物/姿/数字s and IWSR, an アル中患者 drinks 研究 company.

Karadsheh believes there's room for 拡大.

"明白に, they drink," Karadsheh, a member of Jordan's Christian 少数,小数派, said of his compatriots. "Alcohol might be タブー, but you can find alcohol and buy alcohol easily in the market. Jordan is a very 自由主義の place, compared to surrounding countr ies."

Karadsheh and other up-and-coming brewers ― Shepherds 創立者 Alaa Sayej in the West Bank and 陸軍大佐 creator Jamil Haddad in Lebanon ― つまずくd の上に their career-changing passion by chance.

Karadsheh 熟考する/考慮するd 工学 in 玉石, Colorado, a 10年間 ago, but then got a second degree in brewing. Sayej, 27, earned a master's degree in 財政/金融, but began brewing in his U.K. dorm room. Haddad, 33, やめる a 職業 in advertising to turn his long-time beer brewing hobby into a 商売/仕事.

In 自由主義の, diverse Lebanon, getting a brewing license was a simple 手続き unfettered by social タブーs, said Haddad. By contrast, Karadsheh and Sayej 戦う/戦いd red tape and 宗教的な (激しい)反発.

Sayej said 公式の/役人s in the Palestinian 自治 政府 最初 拒絶するd his label featuring the 製図/抽選 of a shepherd, 主張するing it was a depiction of Jesus and thus blasphemous on a beer 瓶/封じ込める. Sayej, a Christian, said it took him three months to 説得する the 当局 さもなければ.

There was also trouble in his home village of Bir Zeit, where he 始める,決める up his brewery.

Once predominantly Christian, the village has a growing イスラム教徒 全住民. At a 最近の Bir Zeit 遺産 festival, Shepherds decided to 除去する its booth after a 地元の イスラム教徒 preacher railed against the brewery at the 地元の イスラム教寺院, 説 it's "haram," or religiously forbidden. Sayej said he withdrew because he didn't want to 混乱に陥れる/中断させる community relations, but that Shepherds later 行う/開催する/段階d its own festival in Bir Zeit.

Karadsheh's 初期の land 取引,協定 for his brewery fell through because the owner didn't want to be linked to alcohol 生産/産物. Karadsheh 設立する another 陰謀(を企てる) 近づく Fuheis, a predominantly Christian community の近くに to Amman. During construction, a tile 層 walke d off the 職業, feeling it was wrong to work in a brewery.

Still, they managed to start brewing ― Karadsheh in 2013, Haddad in 2014 and Sayej last year.

All three feel 熱烈な about what goes into their different styles of beers, 含むing seasonal brews for the summer and for Christmas, 同様に as 中心的要素s like blond ale, wheat and stout beer.

Karadsheh and his onsite brewer, Jordan Wambeke, hope to break into the U.S. market with beers infused with distinctly Middle Eastern flavors, such as a coffee porter with a pinch of cardamom and a hint of date molasses.

"In general, people go to 輸入するs looking for something different, something they 絶対 can't get 地元で, and something that is going to last the trip overseas," said Wambeke, 28, who is from Cody, Wyoming, and joined Carakale six months ago.

The first 出荷/船積み of about 7,000 リットルs is to leave the Fuheis brewery in the coming weeks for a 倉庫/問屋 in New Jersey, for その上の 配当 along the East Coast, said Karadsheh.

Carakale will be competing with 製品s from more than 4,500 (手先の)技術 beer breweries in the U.S., where two more microbreweries open each day, said Bart Watson, 長,指導者 経済学者 at the Brewers 協会, which 代表するs 独立した・無所属 brewers.

Watson said it's a challenge to break into the 競争の激しい U.S. beer market, 価値(がある) more than $100 billion a year, but that 消費 of (手先の)技術 beers and 輸入するs is growing. "Any company that can differentiate itself and 申し込む/申し出 something new has an 適切な時期," he said.

Sayej, who teamed up with younger brothers Khalid and Aziz ― the company スローガン is "brewed by brothers for friends" ― also hopes to 輸出(する). He said he has pre-orders from Italy , the U.K., Sweden, Belgium and the U.S., but is waiting to 任命する/導入する pasteurization 器具/備品 this 落ちる. Pasteurization helps beer 生き残る a long 旅行, he said.

Sayej banks on the beer's origins for his marketing 戦略.

"We have the best 成分 in the world to distinguish us," he said jokingly. "It's 宗教上の Land water."

退役軍人 brewer Nadim Khoury, who 開始する,打ち上げるd Taybeh beer in the West Bank in 1994 and now makes 600,000 リットルs a year, takes pride in 存在 the first to put Palestinians on the 全世界の beer 地図/計画する.

"We don't have a country," Khoury said of 10年間s of failed 成果/努力s to 始める,決める up a Palestinian 明言する/公表する. "But we have our own beer."

Karadsheh wants the same for Jordan ― to "create the first 国祭的な 認めるd Jordanian beer."
