1960s pop singer Bobby Vee has died at age 73

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ― Pop idol Bobby Vee, the boyish, grinning 1960s singer whose career was born when he took a Midwestern 行う/開催する/段階 as a 十代の少年少女 to fill in after the 1959 計画(する) 衝突,墜落 that killed 激しく揺する 'n' roll 星/主役にするs Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, has died. He was 73.

Vee, whose 攻撃する,衝突するs 含むd the chart-topping "Take Good Care of My Baby" and who helped a young (頭が)ひょいと動く Dylan get his start, died Monday of 前進するd Alzheimer's 病気, said his son, Jeff Velline. Vee was 診断するd with Alzheimer's 病気 in 2011, and 成し遂げるd his last show that year.

Vee had been in memory care at The Wellstead of Rogers & Diamondcrest in Rogers, about 25 miles northwest of Minneapolis, for the past 13 months and in hospice care in 最近の weeks, his son said.

Vee died 平和的に surrounded by family, Velline said, calling it "the end of a long hard road."

He said his father was "a person who brought joy all over the world. That was his 職業."

Born Robert Velline in Fargo, North Dakota, Vee was only 15 when he took the 行う/開催する/段階 in Moorhead, Minnesota, after the Feb. 3, 1959, 計画(する) 衝突,墜落 in Iowa that killed Holly, Valens and Richardson on their way to the concert. That dark day in 激しく揺する history was 祝う/追悼するd by singer-songwriter Don McLean in his 1972 pop song "American Pie" as "The Day The Music Died."

The call went out for 地元の 行為/法令/行動するs to 取って代わる Holly at his scheduled show at the Moorhead 国家の Guard Armory. Vee and his 2-week-old 禁止(する)d volunteered, along with three or four other 禁止(する)d. Vee called his debut a milestone in his life, and "the start of a wonderful career."

He went on to 記録,記録的な/記録する 38 最高の,を越す 100 攻撃する,衝突するs from 1959 to 1970, hitting the 最高の,を越す of the charts in 1961 with the Carole King-Gerry Goffin song "Take Good Care of My Baby," and reaching No. 2 with the follow-up, "Run to Him." He 成し遂げるd his last show that year, 法案d only as his 退職, during an 年次の community fundraiser that his family 持つ/拘留するs 近づく their home in St. Joseph, Minnesota, about 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis. But he didn't 発表する his diagnosis until a year later on his website.

In a 2013 interview with The Associated 圧力(をかける), Vee said he knew his abilities were 減らすing and he didn't want to put his family through a public 拒絶する/低下する.

"It's not getting any better, I can tell you that," Vee said. "But I'm doing the best I can."

Vee s till 解放(する)d a new album, "The Adobe 開会/開廷/会期s," a loose jam 開会/開廷/会期 記録,記録的な/記録するd with family members in Vee's adobe garage north of Tucson, Arizona. The 2014 album featured some of Vee's favorite songs from Townes 先頭 Zandt, Gordon Lightfoot and Ricky Nelson. It was 解放(する)d on the 55th 周年記念日 of the Holly 計画(する) 衝突,墜落.

The album also 含むd Vee's cover of (頭が)ひょいと動く Dylan's "The Man in Me," a nod to the folk-激しく揺する legend who got his start in Vee's 禁止(する)d in Fargo.

Dylan grew up in Hibbing, a town on northern Minnesota's アイロンをかける 範囲, and 簡潔に played with Vee's 禁止(する)d. Although their time playing together was short, Dylan had a 継続している 影響 on Vee's career: It was Dylan, himself going by the 指名する Elston Gunn when he 大打撃を与えるd on the piano at a couple of The 影をつくる/尾行するs' gigs, who 示唆するd Vee change his last 指名する from Velline to Vee.

In his "Chronicles: 容積/容量 One" memoir, Dylan 解任するd that Vee "had a metallic, edgy トン to his 発言する/表明する and it was as musical as a silver bell." When Dylan 成し遂げるd in St. Paul in 2013, he saluted Vee in the audience and 成し遂げるd "Suzie Baby."

Vee and his wife, Karen, were married for more than 50 years. She died of 腎臓 失敗 in 2015 at age 71. The couple had four children, 含むing sons who 成し遂げるd with Vee.

Family members said Vee's memory wasn't 影響する/感情d so much by Alzheimer's as his speech. During the AP interview in 2013, he answered questions but would become tongue-tied searching for the 権利 word. Vee tried 慣習に捕らわれない methods to 緩和する his Alzheimer's symptoms, from chiropractor visits to acupuncture, and also 新たにするd his passion for 絵.

And while he いつかs wished he could do the things that once (機の)カム easily, Vee said he was "not going to cry about it."
