BAYONNE, N.J. (AP) ― 公式の/役人s from the Port 当局 of New York and New Jersey 供給するd a first look Tuesday at the Bayonne 橋(渡しをする)'s elevated roadway, part of a $1.3 billion 事業/計画(する) to 許す bigger 貨物 ships to call on New York City-area ports.

The 橋(渡しをする) connects Bayonne, New Jersey, and Staten Island, New York, and is the least-used of the Port 当局's four New York-area 橋(渡しをする)s ーに関して/ーの点でs of numbers of 乗り物s.

It is the most 決定的な of the four for shipping, however, because its 通関手続き/一掃 above the water ― 151 feet at its highest ― has 限られた/立憲的な the size of 大型船s that can pass underneath on their way to the ports of Newark and Elizabeth. Often, the ships' masts pass mere feet below the underside of the (期間が)わたる.

The Port 当局's 解答 was to 乗る,着手する on a コンビナート/複合体 工学 and construction challenge: build another roadway on 最高の,を越す of the 存在するing one while keeping the lower roadway open for traffic, albeit with 減ずるd 接近.

The lower roadway will then be 除去するd, 追加するing more than 60 feet of 通関手続き/一掃 and making room for larger ships that have begun 横断するing the newly 拡大するd パナマ Canal since June.

"We have to 持続する our 競争の激しい status," Steven Plate, the Port 当局's 長,指導者 of major 資本/首都 事業/計画(する)s, said Tuesday as rain and high 勝利,勝つd whipped across the upper road deck. "権利 now we can 押し進める through ships as large as 7,000 コンテナs, but we can grow that to 14,000 コンテナs on one ship."

A se parate, recently 完全にするd 事業/計画(する) 深くするd 航海 channels in New York harbor, at a cost of $2.1 billion, in 予期 of the larger ships.

The Port 当局 最初 hoped to 融通する larger ships by late this year, but 公式の/役人s 改訂するd that 見積(る) a year ago, 特記する/引用するing construction 延期するs 関係のある to 天候 and 構造上の problems with the 橋(渡しをする)'s steel. Construction began in 2013.

The larger ships will be able to pass under by late next year, Plate said. 乗り物s traveling in both directions will be able to use the upper roadway's northbound 小道/航路s by 中央の-2017, and the entire 事業/計画(する) is 推定する/予想するd to be 完全にするd by 中央の-2019, he said.

The new roadway will also have wider 小道/航路s and a median, and will be the first Port 当局 橋(渡しをする) to use cashless (死傷者)数s, said Cedrick Fulton, the 機関's 長,率いる of 橋(渡しをする)s, tunnels and 終点s.
