常習的な paratroopers, in 戦う/戦い dress and with 銃剣 at the ready, brought nine Negro students 静かに into Central High School Wednesday in a new 最高潮 to the hate-filled struggle over 統合,差別撤廃 in Little 激しく揺する.

One man was clubbed and another stabbed in the arm by the 兵士s in the fights that followed.

A few white students left the school after the Negroes entered, but there was no 調印する of a 集まり exodus. A school 公式の/役人 said 1,250 students were in class Wednesday, making 750 absentees. It was 50 more absences than Tuesday when it was known the Negroes would not appear.

The 軍隊/機動隊s are U.S. Army 正規の/正選手s, 部隊s of the 327th Infantry, 101st 空輸の 分割. They arrived Tuesday night on orders from 大統領 Eisenhower.

At 11:20, about two hours after the Negro students entered, the school grounds suddenly filled with students and teachers. Reporters said they were told it was a 解雇する/砲火/射撃 演習, but there was another 報告(する)/憶測 that police were 調査/捜査するing a 報告(する)/憶測 of a 爆弾 脅す.

Two Negro girls, Thelma Mothershe d and Minnie Brown, (機の)カム out with the white students. Minnie Brown walked beside a blonde white student. They were talking together and laughing.

A reporter called from across the street:

"Are you making any friends, Minnie?"

"やめる a few," the girl called 支援する, flashing a smile.

Thelma Mothershed talked with one of the teachers.

The white students were laughing and joking with the paratroopers as they waited on the lawn.

In an arc, two 封鎖するs wide, around the high school, the paratroopers kept breaking up clusters of people, moving them 支援する, herding them の上に porches, and keeping the area (疑いを)晴らす.

They moved with swift, purposeful 活動/戦闘s.

It was in these 操作/手術s that the two men were 負傷させるd. C.E. Blake, 46, a 鉄道/強行採決する 従業員, tried to 得る,とらえる a paratrooper's ライフル銃/探して盗む, 兵士s said. The 州警察官,騎馬警官, quickly 逆転するing it, struck Blake over the 注目する,もくろむ with the butt. He fell to the street but did not appear to be 本気で 負傷させるd.

Paul 負かす/撃墜するs, Springfield, Ark., got a bayonet 削減(する) in the arm 明らかに when he was too slow in obeying an order.

足緒 Matthews, high school 主要な/長/主犯, 報告(する)/憶測d "everything is 静める inside the school and education is 訴訟/進行 普通は."

Outside the school a line of paratroopers, spaced about three yards apart, stood in the street. Behind them, jeeps equipped with walkie-talkies, were 駅/配置するd at 戦略の points.

Four 兵士s stood just outside each of the first-床に打ち倒す doors, and others guarded the long, slanting steps 主要な up from two 味方するs to the main 入り口.

A "前線" began to develop before 8 a.m., in the 辺ぴな 周辺. The first move (機の)カム when Maj. James Meyers, San Antonio, Tex., ordered a squad of 兵士s to 分散させる about a dozen boys and men who gathered around the gas pumps in a service 駅/配置する just across the street.

"Move on out," Meyers told the group.

Sullenly, but with no word, the men began walking 負かす/撃墜する the sidewalks.

For a while, silence settled over the s chool. Only the squawking of the walkie-talkies broke the morning 静める.

Then a bigger (人が)群がる began to congregate at the corner of 16th and Schiller, a 十分な 封鎖する from the school.

A 青年 in a pink shirt, glaring 反抗 at the 兵士s, jeered, "Why don't you tin 兵士s go home?"

Meyers suddenly 選ぶd up the (衆議院の)議長 on the public 演説(する)/住所 system.

"You are again 教えるd to go to your homes 平和的に," he said. "分散させる and return to your homes."

The people did not move. They were not 脅迫的な. They said nothing. But they did not move.

Meyers 静かに 選ぶd up the walkie-talkie, connecting him with the 命令(する) 地位,任命する.

He called for two platoons.

Almost 即時に, the helmeted 兵士s (機の)カム dog-trotting 負かす/撃墜する the street, ライフル銃/探して盗むs held across their chests.

Meyers broke the platoon into two groups, and ordered them to approach the (人が)群がる from the 側面に位置するs.

Breaking into a run, the 兵士s separated. One group 長,率いるd for the (人が)群がる on the sidewalk, the other moved in on the people on the lawn.

They did not appear to touch the people with the 銃剣. But they 軍隊d those on the sidewalk far 負かす/撃墜する the street. Those on the lawn were herded の上に the porch.

The people were curiously silent. There was some muttering, but no shouting or real noise. They kept 落ちるing 支援する.

The same scene, on a 類似の 規模, was repeated several times between 8 and 9 o'clock.

Then, suddenly, at the south end of the school, the バリケードs parted and an Army 駅/配置する wagon rolled through, with jeeps ahead and behind.

Shouts broke out, "there they come."

The Negro students were in the 駅/配置する wagon with an Army officer.

The car (機の)カム to a stop opposite the 前線 of the school, inside the line of paratroopers. The students got out 静かに.

Again, without hurrying, they walked across the spacious grounds toward the steps.

The six girls were all wearing summer dresses, gaily colored. The three boys were in open throat shirts.

Windows on the second 床に打ち倒す of the school were filled with the 長,率いるs of white students, watching.

Then the Negroes 機動力のある the steps and went inside. It was all over in an instant.

The only excitement now, by contrast to the wild 暴動 that broke out Monday when the Negroes went through a 味方する door, (機の)カム from the scurrying of 得点する/非難する/20s of reporters and cameramen, trying to get 近づく the scene.

Paratroopers kept yelling "支援する ... 支援する on the sidewalk." And they 施行するd it, as they had done with the bystanders earlier.

But the story is by no means ended.

Passing の中で the people nearby - many of whom had been 分散させるd by the 軍隊/機動隊s - you heard, over and over again:

"Let 'em do what they want now.

"But they can't keep those 兵士s here 無期限に/不明確に and the minute they're gone, you'll see -"
