Inside story: How ロシアのs 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスd the 民主党員s' emails

WASHINGTON (AP) - It was just before noon in Moscow on March 10, 2016, when the first ボレー of malicious messages 攻撃する,衝突する the Hillary Clinton (選挙などの)運動をする.

The first 29 phishing emails were almost all misfires. 演説(する)/住所d to people who worked for Clinton during her first 大統領の run, the messages bounced 支援する untouched.

Except one.

Within nine days, some of the (選挙などの)運動をする's most consequential secrets would be in the hackers' 手渡すs, part of a 大規模な 操作/手術 目的(とする)d at vacuuming up millions of messages from thousands of inboxes across the world.

An Associated 圧力(をかける) 調査 into the 数字表示式の break-ins that 混乱に陥れる/中断させるd the U.S. 大統領の contest has sketched out an anatomy of the 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセス that led to months of 損失ing 公表,暴露s about the Democratic Party's 指名された人. It wasn't just a few 補佐官s that the hackers went after; it was an all-out blitz across the Democratic Party. They tried to 妥協 Clinton's inner circle and more than 130 party 従業員s, 支持者s and 請負業者s.

While U.S. 知能 機関s have 結論するd that Russia was behind the email 窃盗s, the AP drew on 法廷の data to 報告(する)/憶測 Thursday that the hackers known as Fancy 耐える were closely 提携させるd with the 利益/興味s of the ロシアの 政府.

The AP's 再建- based on a database of 19,000 malicious links recently 株d by cybersecurity 会社/堅い Secureworks - shows how the hackers worked their way around the Clinton (選挙などの)運動をする's 最高の,を越す-of-the-line 数字表示式の 安全 to steal chairman John Podesta's emails in March 2016.

It also helps explain how a ロシアの-linked intermediary could 誇る to a Trump 政策 助言者, a month later, that the Kremlin had "thousands of emails" 価値(がある) of dirt on Clinton.

____

PHISHING FOR VICTIMS

The rogue messages that first flew across the internet March 10 were dressed up to look like they (機の)カム from Google, the company that 供給するd the Clinton (選挙などの)運動をする's email 組織/基盤/下部構造. The messages 勧めるd 使用者s to 上げる their 安全 or change their passwords while in fact steering them toward おとり websites designed to c ollect their 信任状.

One of the first people 的d was Rahul Sreenivasan, who had worked as a Clinton 組織者 in Texas in 2008 - his first paid 職業 in politics. Sreenivasan, now a 法律を制定する スタッフの一員 in Austin, was dumbfounded when told by the AP that hackers had tried to break into his 2008 email - an 演説(する)/住所 he said had been dead for nearly a 10年間.

"They probably はうd the internet for this stuff," he said.

Almost everyone else 的d in the 初期の wave was, like Sreenivasan, a 2008 スタッフの一員 whose 消滅した/死んだ email 演説(する)/住所 had somehow ぐずぐず残るd online.

But one email made its way to the account of another スタッフの一員 who'd worked for Clinton in 2008 and joined again in 2016, the AP 設立する. It's possible the hackers broke in and stole her 接触するs; the data shows the phishing links sent to her were clicked several times.

Secureworks' data 明らかにする/漏らすs when phishing links were created and 示すs whether they were clicked. But it doesn't show whether people entered their passwords.

Within hours of a second ボレー emailed March 11, the hackers 攻撃する,衝突する 支払う/賃金 dirt. All of a sudden, they were sending links 目的(とする)d at 上級の Clinton 公式の/役人s' nonpublic 2016 演説(する)/住所s, 含むing those belonging to longtime Clinton 補佐官 Robert Russo and (選挙などの)運動をする chairman John Podesta.

The Clinton (選挙などの)運動をする was no 平易な 的; several former 従業員s said the organization put particular 強調する/ストレス on 数字表示式の safety.

Work emails were 保護するd by two-factor authentication, a technique that uses a second passcode to keep accounts 安全な・保証する. Most messages were 削除するd after 30 days and staff went through phishing 演習s. 安全 認識/意識性 even followed the 選挙運動者s into the bathroom, where someone put a picture of a toothbrush under the words: "You shouldn't 株 your passwords either."

Two-factor authentication may have slowed the hackers, but it didn't stop them. After repeated 試みる/企てるs to break into さまざまな スタッフの一員s' hillaryclinton.com accounts, the hackers turned to the personal G mail 演説(する)/住所s. It was there on March 19 that they 的d 最高の,を越す Clinton 中尉/大尉/警部補s - 含むing 選挙事務長 Robby Mook, 上級の 助言者 Jake Sullivan and political fixer Philippe Reines.

A malicious link was 生成するd for Podesta at 11:28 a.m. Moscow time, the AP 設立する. 文書s subsequently published by WikiLeaks show that the rogue email arrived in his inbox six minutes later. The link was clicked twice.

Podesta's messages - at least 50,000 of them - were in the hackers' 手渡すs.

___

A SERIOUS BREACH

Though the heart of the (選挙などの)運動をする was now 妥協d, the 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing 成果/努力s continued. Three new ボレーs of malicious messages were 生成するd on the 22nd, 23rd and 25th of March, 的ing communications director Jennifer Palmieri and Clinton confidante Huma Abedin, の中で others.

The 激流 of phishing emails caught the attention of the 連邦検察局, which had spent the previous six months 勧めるing the Democratic 国家の 委員会 in Washington to raise its 保護物,者 against 嫌疑者,容疑者/疑うd ロシアの 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing. In late March, 連邦検察局 スパイ/執行官s paid a visit to Clinton's Brooklyn (警察,軍隊などの)本部, where they were received warily, given the 機関's 調査 into the 候補者's use of a 私的な email server while 長官 of 明言する/公表する.

The phishing messages also caught the attention of Secureworks, a 子会社 of Dell 科学(工学)技術s, which had been に引き続いて Fancy 耐える, whom Secureworks codenamed アイロンをかける Twilight.

Fancy 耐える had made a 批判的な mistake.

It fumbled a setting in the Bitly link-縮めるing service that it was using to こそこそ動く its emails past Google's spam filter. The 失敗 exposed whom they were 的ing.

It was late March when Secureworks discovered the hackers were going after 民主党員s.

"As soon as we started seeing some of those hillaryclinton.com email 演説(する)/住所s coming through, the DNC email 演説(する)/住所s, we realized it's going to be an 利益/興味ing 新たな展開 to this," said Rafe Pilling, a 上級の 安全 研究員 with Secureworks.

By 早期に April Fancy B ear was getting ますます 積極的な, the AP 設立する. More than 60 偽の emails were 用意が出来ている for Clinton (選挙などの)運動をする and DNC スタッフの一員s on April 6 alone, and the hackers began 追跡(する)ing for 民主党員s beyond New York and Washington, 的ing the 数字表示式の communications director for Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and a 副 director in the office of Chicago 市長 Rahm Emanuel.

The group's hackers seemed 特に 利益/興味d in Democratic 公式の/役人s working on 投票者 登録 問題/発行するs: Pratt Wiley, the DNC's then-director of 投票者 保護, had been 的d as far 支援する as October 2015 and the hackers tried to 調査する open his inbox as many as 15 times over six months.

従業員s at several organizations connected to the 民主党員s were 的d, 含むing the Clinton 創立/基礎, the 中心 for American 進歩, 科学(工学)技術 provider NGP VAN, (選挙などの)運動をする 戦略 会社/堅い 270 戦略s, and 同志/支持者 news 出口 Shareblue マスコミ.

As the 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing 強めるd, other elements swung into place. On April 12, 2016, someone paid $37 価値(がある) of bitcoin to the Romanian web hosting company THCServers.com , to reserve a website called Electionleaks.com, によれば 処理/取引 記録,記録的な/記録するs 得るd by AP. A botched 登録 meant the 場所/位置 never got off the ground, but the 記録,記録的な/記録するs show THC received a nearly 同一の 支払い(額) a week later to create DCLeaks.com.

By the second half of April, the DNC's 上級の leadership was beginning to realize something was amiss. One DNC 顧問, Alexandra Chalupa, received an April 20 警告 from Yahoo 説 her account was under 脅し from 明言する/公表する-sponsored hackers, によれば a screengrab she 循環させるd の中で 同僚s.

The Trump (選挙などの)運動をする had gotten a whiff of Clinton email 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスing, too. によれば recently unsealed 法廷,裁判所 文書s, former Trump 外交政策 助言者 George Papadopoulos said that it was at an April 26 会合 at a London hotel that he was told by a professor closely connected to the ロシアの 政府 that the Kremlin had 得るd 妥協ing informa tion about Clinton.

"They have dirt on her," Papadopoulos said he was told. "They have thousands of emails."

A few days later, Amy Dacey, then the DNC 長,指導者 (n)役員/(a)執行力のある, got an 緊急の call.

There'd been a serious 違反 at the DNC.

'DON'T EVEN TALK TO YOUR DOG ABOUT IT'

It was 4 p.m. on Friday June 10 when some 100 スタッフの一員s とじ込み/提出するd into the Democratic 国家の 委員会's main 会議/協議会 room for a 義務的な, all-手渡すs 会合.

"What I am about to tell you cannot leave this room," DNC 長,指導者 operating officer Lindsey Reynolds told the 組み立てる/集結するd (人が)群がる, によれば two people there at the time.

Everyone needed to turn in their laptops すぐに; there would be no last-minute emails; no downloading 文書s and no exceptions. Reynolds 主張するd on total secrecy.

"Don't even talk to your dog about it," she was 引用するd as 説.

Reynolds didn't return messages 捜し出すing comment.

Two days later, as the cybersecurity 会社/堅い that was brought in to clean out the DNC's computers finished its work, WikiLeaks 創立者 Julian Assange told a British Sunday television show that emails 関係のある to Clinton were "未解決の 出版(物)."

"WikiLeaks has a very good year ahead," he said.

On Tuesday, June 14, the 民主党員s went public with the 主張 that their computers had been 妥協d by ロシアの 明言する/公表する-支援するd hackers, 含むing Fancy 耐える.

すぐに after noon the next day, William Bastone, the editor-in-長,指導者 of investigative news 場所/位置 The Smoking Gun, got an email 耐えるing a small (武器などの)隠匿場所 of 文書s 示すd "CONFIDENTIAL."

"Hi," the message said. "This is Guccifer 2.0 and this is me who 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスd Democratic 国家の 委員会."

___

'CAN IT INFLUENCE THE ELECTION?'

Guccifer 2.0 行為/法令/行動するd as a 肉親,親類d of master of 儀式s during the summer of 漏れるs, 布告するing that the DNC's stolen 文書s were in WikiLeaks' 手渡すs, publishing a 選択 of the 構成要素 himself and 絶えず chatting up 新聞記者/雑誌記者s over Twitter i n a 企て,努力,提案 to keep the story in the 圧力(をかける).

He appeared 特に excited to hear on June 24 that his 漏れるs had 誘発するd a 訴訟 against the DNC by disgruntled 支持者s of Clinton 競争相手 Bernie やすりを削る人/削る機械s.

"Can it 影響(力) the 選挙 in any how?" he asked a 新聞記者/雑誌記者 with Russia's スプートニク News, in uneven English.

Later that month Guccifer 2.0 began directing reporters to the newly 開始する,打ち上げるd DCLeaks 場所/位置, which was also dribbling out stolen 構成要素 on 民主党員s. When WikiLeaks joined the fray on July 22 with its own 公表,暴露s the 漏れるs metastasized into a 危機, 誘発する/引き起こすing intraparty 反目,不和ing that 軍隊d the 辞職 of the DNC's chairwoman and drew angry 抗議するs at the Democratic 国家の 条約.

Guccifer 2.0, WikiLeaks and DCLeaks 最終的に published more than 150,000 emails stolen from more than a dozen 民主党員s, によれば an AP count.

The AP has since 設立する that each of one of those 民主党員s had 以前 been 的d by Fancy 耐える, either at their personal Gmail 演説(する)/住所s or 経由で the DNC, a finding 設立するd by running 的s' emails against the Secureworks' 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる).

All three 漏れる-branded 場所/位置s have distanced themselves from Moscow. DCLeaks (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to be run by American hacktivists. WikiLeaks said Russia wasn't its source. Guccifer 2.0 (人命などを)奪う,主張するd to be Romanian.

But there were 調印するs of dishonesty from the start. The first 文書 Guccifer 2.0 published on June 15 (機の)カム not from the DNC as advertised but from Podesta's inbox , によれば a former DNC 公式の/役人 who spoke on 条件 of anonymity because he was not 権限を与えるd to speak to the 圧力(をかける).

The 公式の/役人 said the word "CONFIDENTIAL" was not in the 初めの 文書 .

Guccifer 2.0 had airbrushed it to catch reporters' attention.

___

'PLEASE GOD, DON'T LET IT BE ME'

To hear the 敗北・負かすd 候補者 tell it, there's no 疑問 the 漏れるs helped swing the 選挙.

"Even if ロシアの 干渉,妨害 made only a ごくわずかの difference," Clinton told an audience at a 最近の speech at Stanford University, "this 選挙 was won at the 利ざやs, in the 選挙(人)の College."

It's (疑いを)晴らす Clinton's (選挙などの)運動をする was profoundly 動揺させるd by the sudden (危険などに)さらすs that 定期的に radiated from every 切り開く/タクシー/不正アクセスd inbox. It wasn't just her arch-sounding speeches to 塀で囲む Street (n)役員/(a)執行力のあるs or the (危険などに)さらす of political machinations but also the 残虐な stripping of so many スタッフの一員s' privacy.

"It felt like your friend had just been robbed, but it wasn't just one friend, it was all your friends at the same time by the same 犯罪の," said 足緒 Ferguson, a former Clinton 広報担当者.

An atmosphere of dread settled over the 民主党員s as the 公表,暴露s continued.

One スタッフの一員 述べるd walking through the DNC's office in Washington to find 従業員s scrolling through articles about Putin and Russia. Another said she began looking over her shoulder when returning from Clinton (警察,軍隊などの)本部 in Brooklyn after sundown. Some 恐れるd they were 存在 watched; a car break-in, a strange woman 設立する lurking in a backyard late at night and even a snake spotted on the grounds of the DNC all fed an undercurrent of 恐れる.

Even those who hadn't worked at Democratic organizations for years were anxious. Brent Kimmel, a former technologist at the DNC, remembers watching the 漏れるs stream out and thinking: "Please God, don't let it be me."

___

'MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN'

On Oct. 7, it was Podesta.

The day began 不正に, with Hillary Clinton's phone buzzing with crank messages after its number was exposed in a 漏れる from the day before. The number had to be changed すぐに; a former (選挙などの)運動をする 公式の/役人 said that Abedin, Clinton's confidante, had to call スタッフの一員s one at a time with Clinton's new 接触する (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状) because no one dared put it in an email.

The same afternoon, just as the American 選挙民 was digesting a lewd 音声部の tape of Trump 誇るing about sexually 強襲,強姦ing women, WikiLeaks began publishing the emails stolen from Podesta.

The publi cations 誘発するd a マスコミ 殺到 as they were 施し物d out one (製品,工事材料の)一回分 at a time, with many news organizations 仕事ing reporters with scrolling through the thousands of emails 存在 解放(する)d in tranches. At the AP alone, as many as 30 新聞記者/雑誌記者s were 割り当てるd, at さまざまな times, to go through the 構成要素.

Guccifer 2.0 told one reporter he was thrilled that WikiLeaks had finally followed through.

"Together with Assange we'll make america 広大な/多数の/重要な again," he wrote.
