UN: 64 migrants probably died in Mediterranean boat 沈むing

ROME (AP) - As many as 64 migrants, 含むing a mother whose 3-year-old child 猛烈に clung to her, are 恐れるd dead after a traffickers' overcrowded rubber dinghy from Libya started 沈むing in the Mediterranean Sea, 公式の/役人s said Monday.

The Italian coast guard 救助(する)d 86 people from the boat hours after it started 沈むing Saturday morning 予定 to a 穴をあける. 特に trained 救助(する) divers leapt into the water to pull dozens to safety, 含むing those who managed to stay 船内に the half-潜水するd dinghy 同様に as others already flailing in the 冷淡な waters around it. An Italian coast guard search that went through the night didn't find any more 生存者s or 死体s.

Flavio Di Giacomo of the International Organization for 移住 (IOM) said in tweet Monday that 生存者s interviewed by the 機関 in Catania, Sicily, after they arrived on a 救助(する) ship said 150 people had been 船内に the dinghy when it 始める,決める out from the coast of Libya.

"Sixty-four migrants lost their life in the shipwreck (which) occurred last Saturday," Di Giacomo said, explaining that "probably 56 行方不明の migrants" were lost at sea.

Catania 市長 Enzo Bianco told Italian 無線で通信する 過激な that の中で the 生存者s was a child who lost her mother.

"I watched a 3-year-old girl while she was starting to play at the port here. She was saved, grabbed at the last second by the coast guard in the sea," the 市長 said. "She was 粘着するing to her mother and she saw her 溺死する."

The dinghy, half-潜水するd, had been spotted by an 航空機 from a European 海軍の 使節団 combatting migrant trafficking .

"We can proudly say that many の中で those we resuscitated are now alive," said Maria Rita Agliozzo, a 内科医 from the Order of Malta who, along with a paramedic, was 船内に the coast guard 救助(する) ship. "Unfortunately some of them did not make it."

She said の中で the 生存者s are three children, who are 孤児s, and in good 条件.

"We still have to 再建する their personal stories, because the children are shocked and didn't answer our questions. It's a step-by-step 過程, hopefully they will work through what happened and later 供給する more (警察などへの)密告,告訴(状)," Agliozzo said.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants have been 救助(する)d at sea and taken to southern Italian ports in the last few years, 含むing nearly 119,000 last year. Another 3,100 溺死するd along the way in 2017, the IOM says.
