Rays 計画(する) to have reliever Romo start 2nd straight day

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Tampa Bay Rays reliever Sergio Romo played 11 seasons before making his first major league start.

Not even 24 hours later, Romo will make his second.

Romo will start for the second 連続した day in the finale of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, Rays 経営者/支配人 Kevin Cash said に引き続いて a 5-3 勝利,勝つ on Saturday night.

"I'm sure it will be talked about, but hopefully it 作品," Cash said.

Romo struck out all three 乱打するs he 直面するd in the first inning, using 18 pitches to fan Zack Cozart, マイク Trout and Justin Upton.

Cash said Romo would have continued pitching if not for Daniel Robertson's (野球の)満塁ホームラン,(テニスなどの)グランドスラム in the second inning. Instead, Cash decided to take advantage of the 4-0 lead and すぐに turn to 新人 left-hander Ryan Yarbrough, who gave up one run in 6 1/3 innings.

Cash's 計画(する) going into the game was to 最小限に減らす the number of times Yarbrough would have to 直面する the heart of an Angels' 顔触れ 激しい on 権利-手渡すd 乱打するs.

"Try not to read too much into it, but it did go really, really 井戸/弁護士席 with Romo's 業績/成果," Cash said. "Once we got the lead, 手配中の,お尋ね者 to get him out and 手渡す the ball off to Yarbs so he could 肉親,親類d of get comfortable. But I was really impressed with Sergio, the way he 扱うd everything, because he might not 収容する/認める to it but that's 全く different. It's 全く different than what he's ever been accustomed to and he adjusted to it. Threw strikes, opened the game with a slider, so it was just like he was pitching in the ninth inning."

The approach Sunday will likely have a 類似の look, with Romo throwing one or two innings before the Rays turn to another 投手. In this 事例/患者, it could be left-手渡すd starter Anthony Banda, who is 2-3 with a 5.96 ERA, though 権利-手渡すd relievers Matt Andriese and Austin Pruitt might be 選択s.

"We'll just 肉親,親類d of see how the first inning, first two innings play out," Cash said.

Romo will become the first 投手 to start on 支援する-to-支援する days since Zack Greinke did so for the Milwaukee Brewers on July 7-8, 2012, when he threw only four pitches in the first 遠出 before 存在 排除する/(飛行機などから)緊急脱出するd. によれば ESPN, Oakland's Steve McCatty was the last to start a second straight day after pitching at least an inning of the first, on April 14-15, 1980.

The Rays, who have won six in a 列/漕ぐ/騒動 and 18 of their last 26, have relied on their bullpen to carry them through a handful of games already this season because of 傷害s to their rotation. Cash seems 意図 on taking that idea to the extreme, and after 存在 rewarded on Saturday, he wants to try his luck again.

As unorthodox as it might seem, Yarbrough said there were 利益s to coming out of the bullpen instead of starting.

"It was 肉親,親類d of a nice feeling where there's no thinking 伴う/関わるd. It's just get ready and go out there," Yarbrough said.

For his part, Romo seems to be settling into the mindset of a starter already.

"The way it worked out, Sergio is pumped," Cash said. "I don't think he's here anymore, so he left to get his 残り/休憩(する) and get ready to throw one or two innings."
