War hero and 大統領の 候補者 John McCain dies at 81

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. John McCain, who 直面するd 負かす／撃墜する his captors in a Vietnam 囚人 of war （軍の）野営地，陣営 with jut-jawed 反抗 and later turned his 反抗的な streak into a 35-year political career that took him to 議会 and the 共和国の／共和党の 大統領の 指名／任命, died Saturday after 戦う／戦いing brain 癌 for more than a year. He was 81.

McCain, with his irascible grin and 闘士，戦闘機-操縦する moxie, was a fearless and outspoken 発言する／表明する on 政策 and politics to the end, unswerving in his 弁護 of democratic values and unflinching in his 批評 of his fellow 共和国の／共和党の, 大統領 Donald Trump. He was elected to the 上院 from Arizona six times but twice 妨害するd in 捜し出すing the 大統領／総裁などの地位.

An upstart 大統領の 企て，努力，提案 in 2000 didn't last long. Eight years later, he fought 支援する from the brink of 敗北・負かす to 勝利，勝つ the GOP 指名／任命, only to be overpowered by 民主党員 Barack Obama. McCain chose a little-known Alaska 知事 as his running mate in that race, and turned Sarah Palin into a 国家の political 人物／姿／数字.

After losing to Obama in an 選挙（人）の 地滑り, McCain returned to the 上院 決定するd not to be defined by a failed 大統領の （選挙などの）運動をする in which his 評判 as a 無所属の政治家 had faded. In the politics of the moment and in 国家の political 審議 over the １０年間s, McCain energetically 前進するd his ideas and punched 支援する hard at critics - Trump not least の中で them.

The scion of a decorated 軍の family, McCain embraced his 役割 as chairman of the 武装した Services 委員会, 押し進めるing for 積極的な U.S. 軍の 介入 overseas and eager to 与える／捧げる to "敗北・負かすing the 軍隊s of 過激な Islam that want to destroy America."

Asked how he 手配中の，お尋ね者 to be remembered, McCain said 簡単に: "That I made a major 出資／貢献 to the 弁護 of the nation."

One 劇の 投票（する） he cast in the twilight of his career in 2017 will not soon be forgotten, either: As the 決定的な "no" on 上院 GOP 法律制定 to 廃止する the Affordable Care 行為／法令／行動する, McCain became the ありそうもない savior of Obama's trademark 法律を制定する 業績／成就.

Taking a long look 支援する in his valedictory memoir, "The Restless Wave," McCain wrote of the world he 住むd: "I hate to leave it. But I don't have a （民事の）告訴. Not one. It's been やめる a ride. I've known 広大な／多数の／重要な passions, seen amazing wonders, fought in a war, and helped make a peace. ... I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."

Throughout his long 任期 in 議会, McCain played his 役割 with trademark verve, at one 審理，公聴会 解任するing a 抗議する人 by calling out, "Get out of here, you low-life scum."

But it was just as 著名な when he held his sharp tongue, in service of a party or political 伸び（る）.

Most remarkably, he stuck by Trump as the party's 2016 大統領の 指名された人 even when Trump questioned his status as a war hero by 説: "I like people who weren't 逮捕（する）d." McCain 宣言するd the comment 不快な／攻撃 to 退役軍人s, but 勧めるd the men "put it behind us and move 今後."

His breaking point with Trump was the 解放（する） a month before the 選挙 of a lewd 音声部の in which Trump said he could kiss and 得る，とらえる women. McCain withdrew his support and said he'd 令状 in "some good 保守的な 共和国の／共和党の who's qualified to be 大統領，／社長."

By the time McCain cast his 投票（する） against the GOP health 法案, six months into Trump's 大統領／総裁などの地位, the two men were 率直に at 半端物s. Trump railed against McCain 公然と over the 投票（する）, and McCain 発言／述べるd that he no longer listened to what Trump had to say because "there's no point in it."

By then, McCain had 公表する／暴露するd his brain 癌 diagnosis and returned to Arizona to 捜し出す 治療. His 投票（する） to kill the GOP's years-long Obamacare 廃止する 運動 - an 問題／発行する McCain himself had （選挙などの）運動をするd on - （機の）カム not long after the diagnosis, a surprising capstone to his 法律を制定する career.

In his final months, McCain did not go 静かに, frequently jabbing at Trump and his 政策s from the 除去する of his Hidden Valley family 退却／保養地 in Arizona. On Aug. 13, Trump 調印するd into 法律 a $716 billion 弁護 政策 法案 指名するd in 栄誉（を受ける） of the 上院議員. Trum p 調印するd the John S. McCain 国家の 弁護 Authorization 行為／法令／行動する in a 儀式 at a 軍の base in New York - without one について言及する of McCain.

John Sidney McCain III was born in 1936 in the Panana Canal zone, where his father was 駅／配置するd in the 軍の.

He followed his father and grandfather, the 海軍's first father-and-son 始める，決める of four-星／主役にする 海軍大将s, to the 海軍の 学院, where he 入会させるd in what he 述べるd a "four-year course of insubordination and 反乱." His family yawned at the 業績／成果. A predilection for what McCain 述べるd as "quick tempers, adventurous spirits, and love for the country's uniform" was encoded in his family デオキシリボ核酸.

But he also later wrote that his captors had spared him the worst of the 乱用 （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるd on 捕虜s because his father was a famous 海軍大将. "I knew that my father's 身元 was 直接／まっすぐに 関係のある to my 生き残り," he wrote in one of his 調書をとる／予約するs.

When McCain's Vietnamese captors 申し込む／申し出d him 早期に 解放（する） as a 宣伝 策略, McCain 辞退するd to play along, 主張するing that those 逮捕（する）d first should be the first 始める，決める 解放する／自由な.

In his darkest hour in Vietnam, McCain's will had been broken and he 調印するd a 自白 that said, "I am a 黒人／ボイコット 犯罪の and I have 成し遂げるd 行為s of an 空気／公表する 著作権侵害者."

Even then, though, McCain 辞退するd to make an 音声部の 記録，記録的な／記録するing of his 自白 and used stilted written language to signal he had 調印するd it under duress. And, to the end of his 捕らわれた, he continued to exasperate his captors with his 反抗.

Throughout, McCain played to the bleachers, shouting obscenities at guards to 支える the spirits of fellow 捕虜s. 任命するd by the 捕虜s to 行為／法令／行動する as （軍の）野営地，陣営 entertainment officer, chaplain and communications 長，指導者, McCa in imparted comic 救済, literary tutorials, news of the day, even 宗教的な sustenance.

Bud Day, a former cellmate and メダル of 栄誉（を受ける） 勝利者, said McCain's 捕虜 experience "took some 広大な／多数の／重要な アイロンをかける and turned him into steel."

McCain returned home from his years as a 捕虜 on crutches and never 回復するd 十分な mobility in his 武器 and 脚.

He once said he'd "never known a 囚人 of war who felt he could fully explain the experience to anyone who had not 株d it." Still he 述べるd the time as formative and "a bit of a turning point in me 高く評価する／（相場などが）上がるing the value of serving a 原因（となる） greater than your self-利益／興味."

But it did not tame his wild 味方する, and his first marriage, to Carol Shepp, was a 死傷者 of what he called "my greatest moral failing." The marriage to Shepp, who had been in a 手足を不自由にする／（物事を）損なうing car 事故 while McCain was 拘留するd, ended amiably. McCain 認める the 崩壊／分裂 was 原因（となる）d by "my own selfishness and immaturity."

One month after his 離婚, McCain in 1981 married Cindy Hensley, the daughter of a 豊富な beer distributor in Arizona.

In one day, McCain 調印するd his 海軍 発射する／解雇する papers and flew west with his new wife to a new life. By 1982, he'd been elected to the House and four years later to an open 上院 seat. He and Cindy had four children, to 追加する to three from his first marriage. Their youngest was 可決する・採択するd from Bangladesh.

McCain cultivated a 保守的な 投票（する）ing 記録，記録的な／記録する and a 評判 as a tightwad with taxpayer dollars. But just months into his 上院 career, he made what he called "the worst mistake" of his life. In the 1990s, McCain shouldered another wrenching 問題／発行する, the long 成果／努力 to account for American 兵士s still 行方不明の from the war and to 標準的にする／正常にする relations with Vietnam.

But 直面するd with a 堅い GOP challenge for his 上院 seat in 2010, McCain disowned 一時期／支部s in his past and turned to the 権利 on a number of hot-button 問題／発行するs, 含むing gays in the 軍の and 気候 change. And when the 最高裁判所 in 2010 overturned the （選挙などの）運動をする 財政／金融 制限s that he'd work so hard to 制定する, McCain seemed 辞職するd.

"It is what it is," he said.

After 生き残るing that 選挙, though, McCain took on 保守的なs in his party over the 連邦の 負債 and 民主党員s over 外交政策. McCain never 軟化するd on his 対立 to the U.S. use of 拷問, even in the recalibrations of the 地位，任命する-9/11 world. When the 上院 in 2014 解放（する）d a 報告（する）／憶測 on the 中央情報局's 厳しい 尋問 techniques at secret overseas 施設s after the 9/11 attacks, McCain said the 問題／発行する wasn't "about our enemies. It's about us. It's about who we were, who we are and who we aspire to be. It's about how we 代表する ourselves to the world."

During his final years in the 上院, McCain was perhaps the loudest 支持する for U.S. milita ry 関与 overseas - in Iraq, Syria, Libya and more. That often made him a critic of first Obama and then Trump, and placed him その上の out of step with the growing 孤立主義 within the GOP.

In October 2017, McCain 抑えるのをやめるd some his most blistering 批評 of Trump's "America first" 外交政策 approach - without について言及するing the 大統領，／社長 by 指名する - in 述べるing a "half-baked, spurious 国家主義 cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems."
