億万長者s buying up マスコミ: Savior コンビナート／複合体 or 市民の 義務?
NEW YORK (AP) - The Washington 地位，任命する. Time Magazine. The 大西洋. The Village 発言する／表明する. The Los Angeles Times. All American マスコミ icons, all bought by 億万長者s in the past half １０年間. Some are 栄えるing. One died. On the 残り／休憩（する）, the 陪審／陪審員団's still out.
Still, for beleaguered news organizations the prospect of a 深い-pocketed savior - even from the very same tech 産業 that has kneecapped the マスコミ's 伝統的な 商売／仕事 model - is all but irresistible.
But success is not 保証（人）d. And 危険s run from 産業 部外者s making poor 商売／仕事 決定／判定勝ち（する）s to （危険などに）さらす to undue 影響（力） on 編集（者）の 操作／手術s.

For the 億万長者s, 一方／合間, 所有権 of storied magazines or newspapers 供給するs an alluring combination of a トロフィー 所有物／資産／財産, a high-profile 適切な時期 to 論証する their 商売／仕事 acumen and a chance to 陳列する，発揮する highbrow 市民の-mindedness.
"There is nothing more 満足な than seeing your 指名する on 最高の，を越す of a masthead as publisher or editor or owner," said Samir A. Husni, journalism professor at the University of Mississippi.
While some new 億万長者 owners say they are doing it for 市民の 目的s and to 確実にする that journalism will continue as an 会・原則, at the end of the day these folks are still businesspeople, Husni said. If their 投資s don't work out, it's not 保証（人）d they'll want to run 出版（物）s as charities.
億万長者s are accustomed to success. But they also have enough money to fail. That 含むs tech 有力者／大事業家s like Jeff Bezos, who bought The Washington 地位，任命する in 2013 for $250 million, or Marc Benioff, the Salesforce CEO who just snapped up Time Magazine for $190 million, and even Steve 職業s' 未亡人, Laurene Powell 職業s, who has acquired a 大多数 火刑／賭ける in The 大西洋.
Benioff told the 科学（工学）技術 新聞記者／雑誌記者 and New York Times columnist Kara Swisher this week that he sees Time magazine as a startup that's been "適切な時期 constrained."
"But we are here to unshackle them," he said.
Having these tech 巨人s enter a centuries-old 産業 could help bring in fresh ideas and new 血, not only reinventing the magazines and the newspapers but also the ages-old 商売／仕事 model of relying on advertising for 歳入, Husni said.
"What they see even more than even people in 遺産／遺物 マスコミ," he said, is the need to change the 産業's 商売／仕事 model.
Still, a 深い-pocketed newspaper owner who has 市民の 義務 and a higher 目的 in mind may be more 許すing if that newspaper doesn't すぐに turn a 利益（をあげる）, or if that 利益（をあげる） growth is in the low 選び出す／独身 digits.
Bezos has said that the 地位，任命する is profitable. But even if it weren't, the world's richest man - whose own company アマゾン.com Inc. did not turn a 利益（をあげる） for years - would likely be more 患者 than a hedge 基金 or even 塀で囲む Street.
For many of the recently 購入（する）d マスコミ companies, it is too soon to tell whether their new owners are content waiting for years.
"They want 出版（物）s to be run in a 事務的な way and not be throwing money around and 借りがあるing money," said Rick Edmonds, マスコミ 商売／仕事 分析家 at the Poynter 学校／設ける. "That would sour them."
Joe Ricketts, the 創立者 and CEO of TD Ameritrade and owner of the Chicago Cubs, shut 負かす／撃墜する two popular New York news 場所／位置s last year 特記する／引用するing 商売／仕事 推論する／理由s - a week after their staffs 投票（する）d to unionize. Its publisher, Peter Barbey, whose family made its billions in the 織物 and apparel 産業, bought the 代案／選択肢 週刊誌 in 2015. "It has been on the 拒絶する／低下する for a １０年間 and no one has turned that around," Doctor said.
John Henry, the 主要な／長／主犯 owner of the Boston Red Sox, paid $70 million for The Boston Globe in 2013, but five years later he is still trying to turn the paper's 商売／仕事 around. Biotech 億万長者 Patrick Soon-Shiong bought The Los Angeles Times and other newspapers this year for $500 million, 説 they are "more 決定的な than ever" and calling 偽の news "the 癌 of our times."
