Dodging 神経s, スキーヤー Shiffrin 公約するs to enjoy ride

On 特に stressful occasions, Mikaela Shiffrin can feel the 苦悩 build moments before her run. Her throat 強化するs, and her 注目する,もくろむs water. Her 控訴 feels way too tight, and her stomach churns.

As a 十代の少年少女, the two-time defending 全体にわたる World Cup 支持する/優勝者 never experienced this level of nervousness before a race.

Lately, that 圧力 has いつかs (海,煙などが)飲み込むd her.

It first struck two years ago at an event and she thought it was just the flu. The feeling has overtaken her during several more races, 含むing the Olympic slalom at the Pyeongchang Games last February when she finished fourth.

This season, she's trying something new after talking to a friend who (テニスなどの)ダブルス as a sports psychologist: Tune out 期待s, enjoy the ride.

"If I'm thinking about whatever everybody is 推定する/予想するing, it 廃虚s it and that's silly," the three-time Olympic メダル受領者 said in a phone interview ahead of the World Cup season-開始 巨大(な) slalom race on Oct. 27 in Soelden, Austria. "I'm taking a minute to 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる where I 現実に am in the sport."

The 23-year-old from Avon, Colorado, is coming off a season in which she won 12 races on her way to a second straight 全体にわたる 肩書を与える. She earned two メダルs in South Korea, 含むing gold in the 巨大(な) slalom and silver during the 連合させるd.

Recently, she got to 会合,会う tennis standout Roger Federer .

Now that was 神経-wracking.

"I was sweaty and my 手渡すs were clammy," she laughed. "He's so 冷静な/正味の."

For the 近づいている season, she's taking on another 役割 - leader.

In years past, she hasn't spent all that much time with the downhill team since she also had to fit in slalom and 巨大(な) slalom training. But she recently …に出席するd a 速度(を上げる) (軍の)野営地,陣営 with the U.S. squad in Chile, joining the likes of Laurenne Ross, Alice Merryweather and for a 簡潔な/要約する time Lindsey Vonn, who begins this season five 勝利,勝つs away from breaking Ingemar Stenmark's 記録,記録的な/記録する for most by a World Cup ski racer.

The group 株d tips and 策略, something Shiffrin has been 気が進まない to do in the p ast because she didn't 見解(をとる) herself as a 速度(を上げる) racer. That changed with a downhill 勝利,勝つ in Lake Louise, Alberta, last December.

No more basic course 報告(する)/憶測s relayed up the mountain to チーム仲間s.

"I would call up and be like, 'Everything is 広大な/多数の/重要な. The sun is 向こうずねing. The birds are chirping. Have a good time,'" Shiffrin said. "I didn't want to say anything that could かもしれない be misinterpreted. Now I feel more comfortable with my 速度(を上げる) knowledge and experience."

について言及する the Olympics and she audibly exhales.

At the Pyeongchang Games, Shiffrin was the favorite to 勝利,勝つ not one, but 多重の メダルs. 特に in the slalom, which she 逮捕(する)d at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

She embraced the 圧力. Then, the 天候 played havoc with the Olympic schedule and led to changes.

神経s crept in.

Shiffrin started things off strong by taking gold in the 巨大(な) slalom. The next day was the slalom, her 署名 event. The 苦悩 struck and she threw up before her first run. In the second pass, she was too 用心深い and finished a 位置/汚点/見つけ出す off the podium in a race won by Frida Hansdotter of Sweden. Shiffrin had nothing left in the 戦車/タンク, not even emotions.

"I felt indifferent," Shiffrin said. "That's when I know I'm tired. That I need to get some 残り/休憩(する). But 残り/休憩(する) was the one thing I knew I couldn't get during the Olympics."

She pulled out of the 最高の-G and downhill events to 保存する energy for the 連合させるd, where she earned a silver メダル.

Two メダルs - a nice 運ぶ/漁獲高 from South Korea. Two メダルs, though, wasn't five.

"Everyone was talking about five メダルs, and I was always like, 'Yeah, I'm not going to say it's 完全に out of the question,'" Shiffrin said. "But I wasn't 推定する/予想するing to 勝利,勝つ five メダルs. I wasn't 推定する/予想するing to 勝利,勝つ a 選び出す/独身 メダル. Given what my true 期待s and goals were for the Olympics, it was wildly successful.

"I come 支援する home and people who don't see ski racing on daily basis or a 年一回の basis see the Olympic articles, 'Mikaela Sh iffrin is a five-メダル 脅し.' For them, (two メダルs) was a 失望. I let the country 負かす/撃墜する somehow."

That's where her friend/sports psychologist (機の)カム in handy.

"She knew me before I had 神経s and knew my mentality and how I tick and how I'm driven," Shiffrin said. "She can remind me of that. It's been really, really helpful."

Her mom, Eileen, will …を伴って her to races, but maybe not to all of them as in the past. Shiffrin doesn't want to overburden her mom because of the racer's frenetic schedule.

"She wasn't in Chile the last two weeks and I 行方不明になるd her," Shiffrin said. "I 行方不明になるd her as my friend and as my mom and I really 行方不明になるd her as one of my coaches."

Over the summer, Shiffrin appeared on Maxim's "Hot 100 " 名簿(に載せる)/表(にあげる). Unlike other photos, Shiffrin was wearing a ski jacket - and donning her two メダルs from South Korea.

"I got to speak my own truth about what beauty is. It doesn't have to be women in bikinis," Shiffrin said. "Maybe society's image of women and beauty is changing a little bit? Maybe it's 存在 a little bit more inclusive?"

As for the 苦悩, she definitely feels she has a 扱う on it.

"I'm taking steps toward 存在 happy with myself and not needing justification from another person," Shiffrin said. "I don't need someone else telling me, 'Hey, you're doing 広大な/多数の/重要な' ーするために sleep at night. I can sleep just 罰金.

"I'm happy with myself. I love my family. I love my 職業. I love ski racing. Everything is just 罰金."
