Guatemala village 嘆く／悼むs 2nd child to die in US 保護／拘留
YALAMBOJOCH, Guatemala (AP) - White flowers and flickering candles sat 頂上に a low （米）棚上げする／（英）提議する inside the simple 木造の home in remote, 田舎の Guatemala. Nearby was a small pair of rubber boots, sized to fit an 8-year-old.
Taped to the 塀で囲む were three photos, alternately smiling and serious, 耐えるing a simple epitaph for the boy whose memory the 一時しのぎの物，策 altar 栄誉（を受ける）d: "Felipe Gomez Alonzo. Died Dec. 24 2018 in New Mexico, 部隊d 明言する／公表するs."
On Christmas Eve, Felipe became the second Guatemalan child this month to die while in U.S. 保護／拘留 近づく the Mexican 国境. The deaths 誘発するd 普及した 批評 of 大統領 Donald Trump, who has sought to deflect 責任／義務 toward 民主党員s even as his 母国 安全 長官 公約するd 付加 health 審査s for 拘留するd migrant children.
In the boy's village of Yalambojoch, in western Guatemala, the political fallout in the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs seemed a world away and there was only 深い sadness over his death. 親族s said they had no idea that such a 悲劇 could occur. Nor had they heard about U.S. 政策s that led to thousands of migrant children 存在 separated from their parents earlier this year.
"We don't have a television. We don't have a 無線で通信する," Catarina Gomez, Felipe's sister, said Saturday. "We didn't know what had happened before."
The hamlet, 始める，決める on a plain and surrounded by みごたえのある, pine-covered mountains, is a place of 鎮圧するing poverty and 欠如（する） of 適切な時期, home to a 選び出す／独身 small school, dirt roads that become impassible during the 雨の season and rudimentary homes without insulation, proper 床に打ち倒すing, water or electricity.

The community is 居住させるd by families who fled to Mexico during the bloodiest years of Guatemala's 1960-1996 civil war but returned after the 調印 of peace （許可，名誉などを）与えるs. There are no 職業s, and people live off 不十分な subsistence farming and 地元の 商業. 居住（者）s say the Guatemalan 政府 has turned a blind 注目する，もくろむ to their 苦境, a （民事の）告訴 that can be heard in other 貧窮化した villages in the country.
Felipe's sister, Catarina, said that in 最近の years "everyone started 長，率いるing for the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs," so much so that a 地元の 事業／計画（する） to 上げる education 財政／金融d with Swedish help was abandoned because there were 事実上 no more young people to take the classes.
It was extreme poverty and 欠如（する） of 適切な時期 that drove Felipe's father, Agustin Gomez, to decide that he and the boy would 始める，決める off for the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs. Others from the community had been able to cross the U.S. 国境 with children, and he 人物／姿／数字d they would have the same luck. Felipe was chosen because he was the oldest son. It didn't occur to anyone that the 旅行 could be dangerous.
"I didn't think of that, because several families had already left and they made it," the boy's mother, Catarina Alonzo said, speaking in the indigenous Chuj language as her stepdaughter translated into Spanish.
Felipe was healthy when they left, によれば the family. The last time he spoke with his mother was a day before they were taken into 拘留，拘置 by 国境 スパイ／執行官s. Felipe told her he was 井戸／弁護士席, that he had eaten chicken, that the next time they talked would be by phone from the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs.
Instead, the call that （機の）カム Christmas Day was from her husband, who said Felipe had died the day before.
The two had been apprehended a week earlier, on Dec. 18, 近づく the Paso del Norte 橋（渡しをする） connecting El Paso, Texas, to Juarez, Mexico, によれば 国境 公式の／役人s. Father and son were held at the 橋（渡しをする）'s 過程ing 中心 and then the 国境 Patrol 駅／配置する in El Paso before 存在 transferred on Dec. 23 to a 施設 in Alamogordo, New Mexico, about 90 miles (145 キロメーターs) away.
After an スパイ／執行官 noticed Felipe coughing, father and son were taken to an Alamogordo hospital, where Felipe was 設立する to have a 103-degree fever (39.4 degrees Celsius), 公式の／役人s have said.
Felipe was held for 観察 for 90 minutes, によれば U.S. Customs and 国境 保護, before 存在 解放（する）d with prescriptions for amoxicillin and ibuprofen.
But the boy fell sick hours later and was 認める to the hospital on Christmas Eve. He died just before midnight.
New Mexico 当局 said late Thursday that an 検視 showed Felipe had the flu, but more 実験（する）s need to be done before a 原因（となる） of death can be 決定するd.
The other Guatemalan child, 7-year-old Jakelin Caal, died Dec. 8 in El Paso. She showed 調印するs of sepsis, a 潜在的に 致命的な 条件 brought on by 感染, によれば 公式の／役人s.
On Saturday, Trump （人命などを）奪う，主張するd that Felipe and Jakelin were "very sick" before they reached the 国境, though both young migrants passed 初期の health 審査s by 国境 Patrol.
Customs and 国境 保護 Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said last week that 事前の to this month, no child had died in the 機関's 保護／拘留 in more than a １０年間.
On Sunday he called for a "multifaceted 解答" on 移民／移住, 含むing not only better 国境 安全 and new 移民／移住 法律s but more 援助（する） to the Central American countries the migrants are 逃げるing from.
Referring to the U.S. 誓約（する） earlier this month of $5.8 billion in 開発 援助（する） for Central America, McAleenan called it "a tremendous step 今後."
"There are green shoots of 進歩 both on 安全 and the 経済的な 前線 in Central America. We need to foster that and help 改善する the 適切な時期s to stay at home," he said on ABC's "This Week."
Outside the Gomez family home in Yalambojoch, women gathered wearing lavender skirts in the intricate patterns typical of indigenous garb in Guatemala. Colorful tapestries hung on a clothesline above the muddy yard.
Taped to the door were a pair of Felipe's artworks. One was a （判決などを）下すing of a blue balloon with a green string; in the other, a white horse jumped ov er a 盗品故買者 against a yellow sun and tangerine sky.
の中で the 村人s grieving Felipe's death was his 7-year-old best friend, Kevin. Two days before Felipe and his dad left, the two boys quarreled.
"They were crying because they had fought," said Felipe's sister, Catarina.
By the time Kevin （機の）カム 支援する to look for his friend, he had left for the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs. Kevin now knows that Felipe has died, the family said.

The Guatemalan 領事館 in 不死鳥／絶品 has said that Agustin Gomez was 解放（する）d on a 人道的な license 許すing him to remain in the 部隊d 明言する／公表するs for now. Felipe's 団体／死体 is 推定する／予想するd to be sent 支援する to Guatemala around 中央の-January.
