訴える手段／行楽地 keeps alive tradition of 収穫ing ice from lake
HOLDERNESS, N.H. (AP) - Modern refrigerators have little 控訴，上告 for summer guests at a rustic New Hampshire 訴える手段／行楽地 who prefer 冷静な／正味のing their 瓶／封じ込めるs of water, soda and beer the old-fashioned way.
The 準備 begins five months ahead of time, when 訴える手段／行楽地 スタッフの一員s and volunteers gather to 収穫 ice from nearby Squam Lake. The January ritual dates 支援する to 1897, when Rockywold-Deephaven （軍の）野営地，陣営s first opened in the town of Holderness, and is practiced for 商業の 目的s only at a handful of other places in the country.
The group, equipped with chain saws, ice 選ぶs and a 抱擁する saw on a sled, can 収穫 200 トンs of ice over several days in a typical winter. They 輸送（する） the ice to two 貯蔵 sheds on the campgrounds, where it's kept until the summer. Then, スタッフの一員s with wheelbarrows 供給する the ice to 訴える手段／行楽地 guests, who place it in an antique icebox - some dating 支援する to the 1930s with oak exteriors and a tin or zinc lining - to keep （水以外の）飲料s and 軽食s 冷淡な. Guests are told not to eat the ice, though some old-timers 明らかに still put a few shards in their cocktails.
"Many of the families have been coming for 世代s, and people who come here don't like to see much change. They like it to be a simple, 静かな place," said John Jurczynski, the co-general 経営者／支配人 of Rockywold-Deephaven （軍の）野営地，陣営s for the past 29 years and who 監督するs the ice 収穫. A 押し進める to bring in 電気の refrigerators in the 1960s was rebuffed by guests.
"It's such a neat tradition. People love it," he said.
For weeks, Jurczynski had been putting out 公式発表s about ice 条件s on Squam Lake. By 中央の-January, the word went out. The ice had finally reached a 安全な thickness - in this 事例／患者 about 13 インチs - and the 収穫 could begin.

Once they （疑いを）晴らすd the snow and charted a grid, the cutting started and whining sounds of saws echoed across the lake.
労働者s mostly use a contraption called an ice saw - with a 抱擁する blade 機動力のある on a sled - to make the 削減（する）s. When it's all done, the group collects as many as 3,600 封鎖するs of ice.
"明白に spending this time and energy, we wouldn't have to do it. We could buy 封鎖するs of ice," said Jane Kellogg, a retired teacher on the ice whose father （機の）カム to the 訴える手段／行楽地 as a boy and who used to bring her elementary school students out here to watch the 収穫.
"But there is something about the pride this place has in still 存在 the place that 持続するs that culture, that tradition," she said.
Jon Spence, a 訴える手段／行楽地 維持／整備 労働者 負担ing the ice の上に the トラックで運ぶ, said he 準備するs for the event each year by watching old movies and ビデオs of ice 収穫ing. He 設立する a 最高の，を越す hat to wear for the occasion but wasn't able to 跡をつける 負かす／撃墜する the long coats that were popular の中で harvesters 支援する in the day.
"I love the icing. One of the 推論する／理由s I've worked here so long is the icing," Spence said. "Whenever anyone asked what I do for a living, I say I am a 商業の ice harvester. They don't know what that is. Most people don't get it. Most people think we are ice fishing out here."
Ice 収穫ing got its start 支援する in 1805 when Frederic Tudor, who lived outside Boston, （機の）カム up with the idea of "selling 冷淡な" and shipping ice around the world, によれば Dennis Picard, a retired Massachusetts museum director who is considered an 専門家 on ice 収穫ing. In the Maine town of South Bristol, the ice is sold commercially and used to produce ice cream for an 年次の ice cream social in July.
At Rockywold-Deephaven, which is open to guests from June through 中央の-September, the h arvest has not only 生き残るd the 前進するs of electricity but also - at least so far - the 影響s of 気候 change. There has never been a 収穫 行方不明になるd in the past 122 years, though several times they had to move it to another 場所 on the lake because that 位置／汚点／見つけ出す 凍結するs over faster.
And with newcomers like 23-year-old Jack Sengstaken lending a 手渡す, it might just carry on for years to come.
"It's just really 冷静な／正味の to be part of a tradition that has been going on for so long," said Sengstaken who grew up on the lake and whose 親族s helped 設立する the nearby town of 挟む. "You can 肉親，親類d of go 支援する in time a bit."
