University of Alabama 拒絶するs $26M gift after abortion flap

TUSCALOOSA, 式の. (AP) - The University of Alabama gave 支援する a philanthropist's $26.5 million 寄付 and took his 指名する off the 法律 school Friday, a week after he called on students to ボイコット(する) the 会・原則 over the 明言する/公表する's new abortion 禁止(する).

Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr., a 70-year-old Florida real 広い地所 投資家, said he has no 疑問 the board of trustees 行為/法令/行動するd in 返答 to his 発言/述べるs, and he complained that the 明言する/公表する of Alabama is only 増強するing its 評判 as "the land of the backward," 十分な of "hicks."

University 公式の/役人s emphatically 否定するd the 決定/判定勝ち(する) had anything to do with Culverhouse's stand on the abortion 法律 and said it was 誘発するd instead by his 試みる/企てるs to dictate how the money should be spent. They did not (a)手の込んだ/(v)詳述する.

Culverhouse's 誓約(する), 発表するd in September, was the biggest 出資/貢献 ever made to the university. In return, the 法律 school was 改名するd the Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of 法律.

Within minutes of the trustees' 投票(する), a 維持/整備 乗組員 had 除去するd his 指名する and the university had wired him a $21.5 million refund of the money he had already given the university toward 実行するing his 誓約(する).

Alabama's toughest-in-the-nation abortion 禁止(する), passed last month and 始める,決める to 施行される in November, would make 終結させるing a pregnancy a 罪,犯罪 罰せられるべき by 10 years to life in 刑務所,拘置所 for the provider, with no exceptions for 強姦 or incest.

Last week, Culverhouse 勧めるd students to ボイコット(する) the university over the 禁止(する), 説: "I don't want anybody to go to that 法律 school, 特に women, until the 明言する/公表する gets its 行為/法令/行動する together.

Hours later, Alabama 発表するd it was considering giving 支援する his money - a move it said was 進行中で even before Culverhouse spoke out.

University (ドイツなどの)首相/(大学の)学長 Finis E. St. John IV said Friday that Culverhouse's 期待s for the use of the gift were "inconsistent with the 必須の values of academic 正直さ and 独立した・無所属 行政" at Alabama.

St. John said that "for these 推論する/理由s and for these 推論する/理由s alone," he recommended returning Culverhouse's gift.

Culverhouse 定評のある telling the university that the 法律 school should 収容する/認める more students and that his 寄付 was ーするつもりであるd to 基金 scholarships to 達成する that. But he said he thought the 事柄 had been 解決するd.

The 実業家 and 弁護士/代理人/検事 did not …に出席する Alabama, but his parents did, and the 商売/仕事 school 耐えるs the 指名する of Hugh Culverhouse Sr., a 豊富な 税金 lawyer, developer and philanthropist in his own 権利 who owned the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After the trustees' 投票(する), the younger Culverhouse said that he and father had 寄付するd to the university over the years in part to rid Alabama of a 確かな stereotype: "We are the land of the backward, we are hicks, we 欠如(する) the sophistication to see two 味方するs to an argument."

"What have you done Alabama? You have 効果的に put a 12-計器 in your mouth and pulled the 誘発する/引き起こす," Culverhouse said. "You have 増強するd that horrible stereotype that my father and I have tried so hard to 除去する."

Robert Kelchen, a professor of higher education at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, said it is unusual for a gift of this magnitude to be returned so quickly, 追加するing that 論争s of this sort typically develop over years.

Kelchen said the dust-up "could 圧力 more 政治上 自由主義の 寄贈者s to 削減(する) off support to the university."
