Batsmen under 支配(する)/統制する _ for now _ at Cricket World Cup

BRISTOL, England (AP) - Batsmen on the rampage at the Cricket World Cup. Fans in 本物の danger from a 一斉射撃,(質問などの)連発/ダム of wild sixes. The first 500-run team total in a one-day international any day soon.

Those 予測(する)s appear to be on the wild 味方する 権利 now as the 最高の-high totals 広範囲にわたって 予報するd for the tournament have failed to materialize. Forget 500, we 港/避難所't seen 400 yet on iconic but small-ish English grounds.

With 10 games 完全にするd in the May 30-July 14 tournament, the always 予測できない Pakistan 持つ/拘留するs the tournament 最高の,を越す 得点する/非難する/20 of 348-8 against host England. That was on Monday at Trent 橋(渡しをする) in Nottingham, where England 始める,決める the 現在の ODI highest 得点する/非難する/20 of 481-6 last year, enjoying the 記録,記録的な/記録する even more as the 対抗者 was archrival Australia.

So what's the 推論する/理由 for the comparative 欠如(する) of runs?

Players' 神経s at a major tournament surely 港/避難所't helped, because there's 意味ありげに more at 火刑/賭ける in every game than there is in a 正規の/正選手 ODI series. The wickets have not been 用意が出来ている to be as run-friendly as many (乱打するs) had hoped, along with England's 伝統的に 曇った and often dreary 条件s.

And in a long, all-play-all 10-team tournament, some players may not be fully letting 引き裂く.

In the first nine days, that magical 500 has been a long, long way off.

The Associated 圧力(をかける) takes a look at what else we've learned so far at the tournament:

TURN OF THE SPIN

This World Cup has been 広大な/多数の/重要な PR for the spinners.

South Africa wrist spinner Imran Tahir grabbed the headlines by 解任するing England's Jonny Bairstow in the very first over of the tournament.

While Bairstow became the first 開始 batsman out for a golden duck in the 開始 innings of a World Cup, the 40-year-old Tahir's 業績/成就 - the first spinner to bowl the first ball of a men's World Cup - seemed more 重要な for the game's 未来 direction.

Bangladesh gave South Africa a taste of its own 薬/医学 when its spinners smothered the Proteas at the Oval. The spinners had South Africa locked up from the start by offspinner Mehidy Hasan bowling from the second over. Tahir has been 支援する at it again, also bowling the first over of South Africa's third game against India.

SOUTH AFRICA SLUMPS

Faf du Plessis' South Africa has been the surprise team of the tournament but not for good 推論する/理由s, with three straight 敗北・負かすs against England, Bangladesh and India.

The 開始 loss against 最高の,を越す-階級d England wasn't 予期しない but the 利ざや of 敗北・負かす - 104 runs - in retrospect was a 手がかり(を与える) of what was to come. A 21-run loss to under-率d Bangladesh flattered South Africa and Ind ia rubbed it in with a six-wicket 勝利,勝つ on Wednesday.

Off the field, the 発覚 that 星/主役にする batsman AB de Villiers made a last-minute 申し込む/申し出 to come out of international 退職 to play at the tournament but was turned 負かす/撃墜する hasn't helped. Nor has experienced 急速な/放蕩な bowler Dale Steyn 存在 軍隊d to go home with a 権利 shoulder 傷害.

Third-階級d South Africa knows it must radically 改善する but it won't be 平易な. Next up are the 脅迫してさせるing pacers and big hitters of West Indies in Southampton on Monday.

(DON'T) LET IT RAIN

Any tournament in England is likely to have some rain - in any month - but the first 10 Cricket World Cup games were all 完全にするd.

執拗な rain 妨げるd any play at all in the 11th game between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, however, at Bristol's 郡 Ground on Friday.

It was only the second match across five men's Cricket World Cup tournaments in England, dating 支援する to 1975, that not a 選び出す/独身 ball was bowled in a game.

STOKES AWAY

He says he was in the wrong position and the ball "just stuck." Many others あられ/賞賛するd England allrounder Ben Stokes for the catch of the tournament, 始める,決める to be replayed for years to come.

Best watched in real time, to 高く評価する/(相場などが)上がる the sheer 速度(を上げる) and artistry, the ball was coming hard at Stokes. He 跡をつけるd 支援する 味方する on, timed his jump, threw his 権利 arm high, and caught the ball while 落ちるing backward. South Africa lower-order batsman Andile Phehlukwayo had likely never been 解任するd in such みごたえのある fashion.

Stokes modestly played 負かす/撃墜する the catch.

"I had a panic on for the catch, I was その上の in than I should have been. Luckily it stuck," Stokes said. "It was a 規則 catch if I was in the 権利 position."

Another 競争相手 for best catch so far? West Indies' Sheldon Cottrell's 解雇/(訴訟の)却下 of Steve Smith in his team's 15-run loss to Australia.

Cottrell reached out to momentarily 得る,とらえる a catch just inside the 境界 and, to 避ける making the catch 無効の, 投げ上げる/ボディチェックするd the ball in the 空気/公表する as he weaved outside and 支援する inside the rope before collecting it again in both 手渡すs.

OLD RIVALS

With an unrivalled 記録,記録的な/記録する of success at the Cricket World Cup, five-time 勝利者 Australia has used its 開始 games to show it's not a team built on sand. An 平易な victory against Afghanistan was followed by an occasionally 緊張した 勝利,勝つ over West Indies.

The defending 支持する/優勝者 turned around a long 干ばつ in the ODI 判型 to enter the tournament on an eight-game winning streak after 決起大会/結集させるing from 2-0 負かす/撃墜する for a 3-2 series 勝利,勝つ in India and 広範囲にわたる Pakistan 5-0. Former captain Smith and 副/悪徳行為-captain David Warner have returned from their 12-month 禁止(する)s for their 役割s in a ball-tampering 論争 in a 実験(する) match in South Africa.

England is 階級d No. 1 and a pre-tournament favorite, but has never won the World Cup and its 14-run loss to Pakistan with sloppy fielding and 20 extras brought 支援する some 疑問s for long-苦しむing fans.
