Gardner had good news for Colorado. But Trump had tweets.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner had reeled in a big political fish.

A major 政府 機関, the Bureau of Land 管理/経営, was moving to his 明言する/公表する and 場内取引員/株価 a victory years in the making for one of the 上院's most 攻撃を受けやすい 共和国の/共和党のs. But Gardner's moment of 勝利 rolled out Monday in the 影をつくる/尾行する of 大統領 Donald Trump's 人種差別主義者 tweets calling for four congresswomen of color to "go 支援する" to where they (機の)カム from. 共和国の/共和党のs, perhaps Gardner most of all, struggled to 答える/応じる.

A 保守的な 無線で通信する show host 手配中の,お尋ね者 to know: Had Gardner heard about Trump's tweets?

"We have been working on the BLM move, and that's 基本的に everything we've been trying to get done," Gardner replied.

"I translate that as 'I don't want to talk about it,'" chortled Denver host Steffan Tubbs.

It's a feeling 広範囲にわたって 株d の中で 共和国の/共和党のs in 議会 疲れた/うんざりした of answering for Trump's assorted 誘発s about Mexicans, イスラム教徒s, 移民,移住(する)s, people of color, women and more.

But as Gardner's 返答 showed, Trump's pass-or-fail 忠義 実験(する)s don't leave "no comment" as much of an 選択 for the 共和国の/共和党の 上院議員s running for reelection in 2020. The 大統領,/社長 has a 記録,記録的な/記録する of helping unseat "disloyal" members of the GOP in the House and the 上院. Love, hate or 許容する Trump, Gardner and other 危うくするd 共和国の/共和党のs will need his support as the 大統領,/社長 amps up his own 企て,努力,提案 for reelection.

There was a sense this week that Trump's "go home" 論争 示すd an 強めるing 段階 in the 大統領,/社長's approach and that Gardner may have 申し込む/申し出d an 早期に 手がかり(を与える) for 2020 (選挙などの)運動をするs on how to 答える/応じる when the 大統領,/社長 steps on an 業績/成就. The answer: blandly and minimally, with relentless pivots 支援する to 問題/発行するs.

On Sunday, Trump 開始する,打ち上げるd an unapologetic stream of tweets 示唆するing that the four women leave the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs and casting them as haters of America, Jews and イスラエル. He didn't 指名する the members of the self-styled "squad," but his 発言/述べるs were in (疑いを)晴らす 言及/関連 to 自由主義の freshmen Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. 激しい非難 rolled in from 民主党員s and a few 共和国の/共和党のs, and Trump 申し込む/申し出d no 陳謝s.

Then (機の)カム what was supposed to be Gardner's rollout Monday, when he tweeted midafternoon that he was "thrilled" to 発表する that t he 行政 was moving the 機関 from Washington to Grand Junction, Colorado. The 内部の Department, which 監督するs the bureau, said about 300 職業s would move to Western 明言する/公表するs, with about 85 職業s for Colorado.

"This is a victory for 地元の communities, 支持するs for public lands and proponents for a more responsible and accountable 連邦の 政府," Gardner said in a 声明.

By Tuesday, Gardner 申し込む/申し出d up a more on-point answer to the question of whether and how much he supports Trump's 人種差別主義者 tweets.

"I 同意しない with the 大統領,/社長," Gardner told Denver-area KOA NewsRadio. "I wouldn't have sent these tweets."

But asked by CNN later at the (ワシントンの)連邦議会議事堂, he would not say whether he thought Trump's tweets were 人種差別主義者.

His 警告を与える may have been 知らせるd by the 選挙 math. Gardner was elected to the 上院 by a little under 2 百分率 points in the 共和国の/共和党の wave year of 2014, while 民主党員s swept statewide offices in Colorado last year, winning the 知事/長官の職 by 11 百分率 points. 民主党員 Hillary Clinton 敗北・負かすd Trump in Colorado by 5 百分率 points in 2016. 投票者 登録 in the 明言する/公表する is divided more or いっそう少なく 平等に three ways, の中で 共和国の/共和党のs, 民主党員s and 独立した・無所属s.

That makes Gardner perhaps the most 攻撃を受けやすい GOP 上院議員 in the country as 共和国の/共和党のs defend 22 seats and their 上院 大多数.

Like many in his party, Gardner has a 複雑にするd history with Trump. Gardner 簡潔に 是認するd the reality television 星/主役にする-turned-大統領の 候補者 in 2016 but 無効にするd that 支援 after the "接近 Hollywood" tape in which Trump 誇るd of groping women.

This time, Gardner has already 是認するd Trump's reelection (選挙などの)運動をする.

He's had to walk a political tightrope. To 勝利,勝つ another 称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語, Gardner will need to 持つ/拘留する the 投票(する)s of Colorado's Trump-連合した 共和国の/共和党のs who remain 怪しげな of the 上院議員's 無効にするd 裏書,是認 in 2016, while winning over 独立した・無所属s who 拒絶する the 大統領,/社長 but are 用心深い of the 民主党員s' 協議事項 .

Gardner has occasionally chastised the 大統領,/社長 after 議論の的になる moments - 顕著に after Trump 賞賛するd "both 味方するs" に引き続いて a 対決 between neo-Nazis and 行動主義者s in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 that left a counterprotester dead - and he's carved out a 際立った path on 移民/移住. But Gardner has also 投票(する)d for most of Trump's 優先s. He's supported the 大統領,/社長's 成果/努力 to 廃止する the Affordable Care 行為/法令/行動する, his 税金 削減(する), both his 最高裁判所 司法(官)s and several other 連邦の 裁判官s, along with most of his 閣僚.

Gardner, who has a sunny disposition, has also embraced elements of Trump's incendiary 発言/述べるs. In a speech at a 保守的な 集会 in Denver on Friday, Gardner, who has bemoaned 民主党員s' embrace of "社会主義," slammed what 共和国の/共和党のs 述べる as the leftward drift of 民主党員s.

"Since when did wearing the Betsy Ross 旗 become akin to wearing a swastika?" Gardner asked. "Since when did men and women trying to 保護する our 国境s and keep our country 安全な become Nazis running 集中 (軍の)野営地,陣営s?

Gardner's approach 明らかに passed Trump's 忠義 実験(する) and by late Tuesday was 存在 特記する/引用するd as an example for others in the party.

"Sen. Gardner is rightly 焦点(を合わせる)d on 政策s, not personalities," said Sen. Todd Young of Indiana, chairman of the 上院's 共和国の/共和党の (選挙などの)運動をする arm. "If we do that, we 勝利,勝つ."

But Trump's 成果/努力s to 決起大会/結集させる his base of 支持者s can flip 井戸/弁護士席-laid 計画(する)s, said one 世論調査員.

"It's difficult to have that be an 効果的な 戦略 when the 大統領,/社長 decides to 爆破 away at four women of color," GOP 世論調査員 David Flaherty said of Gardner's 成果/努力s to 焦点(を合わせる) on a プロの/賛成の-Colorado 協議事項.
