Gazans struggle to 保護する antiquities from neglect, 略奪するing

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza （土地などの）細長い一片 (AP) - Walid al-Aqqad's Gaza home would be the envy of many an antiquities collector.

Pieces of Corinthian columns 迎える／歓迎する 訪問者s in the backyard. Inside, hundreds of 古代の マリファナs and other artifacts hang on the 塀で囲むs or are arranged helter-skelter on 棚上げにするs.

They are 残余s of five millennia of Gaza's history, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic caliphates and on 負かす／撃墜する to the years of Ottoman and British 支配する in the 20th century.

A sliver of land on the Mediterranean, Gaza was a major 貿易（する） 大勝する between Egypt and the Levant going 支援する to 古代の times. But １０年間s of 反乱s, war and political 騒動 have （打撃，刑罰などを）与えるd a 激しい （死傷者）数 on its rich archaeological 遺産, exposing it to 略奪するing and 破壊.

The Islamic 交戦的な group Hamas 掴むd Gaza in 2007 from 軍隊s loyal to the Western-支援するd Palestinian 当局. In 返答, Egypt and イスラエル 課すd a 封鎖 on Gaza that has left the 領土 孤立するd and ますます 貧窮化した. The Palestinians say the 終結s have also 妨げるd 穴掘りs and 制限するd 専門家s' 接近 to new 発見s.

Hamas has done little to 保護する Gaza's antiquities and in some 事例／患者s 活発に destroys them. In 2017, Hamas 当局 leveled large parts of Tel Es-Sakan, the remains of a 4,500-year-old Bronze Age city, to make way for construction 事業／計画（する）s.

Ayman Hassouna, professor of history and archaeology at Gaza's Islamic University, 非難するs イスラエル, the Palestinian 当局 and Hamas 平等に for not 保護するing the 領土's cultural herita ge. He says イスラエル 押収するd artifacts from archaeological digs in the １０年間s it 占領するd Gaza and did little to 妨げる antiquities trafficking. Palestinian 当局 治める／統治するing Gaza since 1995 have "attacked many archaeological 場所／位置s - either 故意に or not," he said.

He also 非難するd a 欠如（する） of 認識／意識性 の中で Gazans of the importance of 保存するing antiquities and leaving 古代の 場所／位置s undisturbed.

"When they find something, they would hide it or build over it," he said.

Antiquities plundering and trafficking also remains a problem, said Heyam al-Bitar, an archaeologist with Gaza's 省 of 観光旅行，事業 and antiquities. She said the 省 only learned earlier this year that dozens of 古代の Greek silver coins were 密輸するd out of Gaza in 2016.

"It's difficult to 跡をつける 負かす／撃墜する the trafficking because everything happens in the dark," she said.

Al-Aqqad is one of few trying to save antiquities in Gaza. He began his collection in 1975, buying from collectors or searching the beach and new construction 場所／位置s. Now his house in the southern city of 旅宿泊所 Younis is an archaeological, 遺産 and cultural museum, welcoming school trips and history students.

"This museum was 設立するd by personal 成果／努力s and at the expense of my children's bread... to 保護する the pieces," al-Aqqad said.

His is one of five 合法的に 登録（する）d 私的な collections in the （土地などの）細長い一片, 含む／封じ込めるing 10,000 artifacts and 反対するs of historical value, によれば the 省.

The 省 keeps an 在庫 of all 私的な collections to 妨げる artifacts from 存在 sold or 密輸するd out, said al-Bitar. Owners have received training from the 省 and the Islamic University on how to 保存する artifacts and 回復する clay 反対するs when they fracture, she 追加するd.

The underfunded 省 opened a public museum in 2010 at al-Basha Palace, a fort built by Gaza's Mamluk 支配者s in the 中央の-13th century. It has 350 to 400 pieces held in sparsely-filled 陳列する，発揮する 事例／患者s. The museum occasionally s howcases pieces from the 私的な collections, but does not have space for all of them.

"The 省 has 計画（する）s to build a large 国家の museum for all these archaeological pieces, but the political 経済的な 状況／情勢 and the 包囲 on Gaza are 妨げるing this," she said.

Restorers are struggling to save two of Gaza's 危うくするd 遺産 場所／位置s: a 5th century Byzantine Church in Jabaliya, discovered in 1996, and a 4th-century 修道院 just south of Gaza City. Since the Jabaliya church's 発見, it has 苦しむd from neglect and was 損失d in fighting between イスラエル and Palestinian 交戦的なs.

Last year, French NGO Premi?re Urgence Internationale 開始する，打ち上げるd an ambitious 26-month 事業／計画（する） to 保存する the two 場所／位置s with a £1,755,000 認める by the British 会議. As part of the 事業／計画（する）, 保護の roofs now cover the 廃虚s and 層s of sand 保護する ornate mosaic 床に打ち倒すs from その上の 破壊.
