共和国の/共和党のs still waiting on Pompeo in Kansas 上院 race

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Even though U.S. 国務長官 マイク Pompeo has 宣言するd a 上院 run to be "off the (米)棚上げする/(英)提議する" next year, many fellow 共和国の/共和党のs in Washington and his home 明言する/公表する of Kansas aren't buying it.

大多数 Leader Mitch McConnell is の中で the GOP 上院議員s encouraging the former 下院議員 to rethink a run for Kansas' open 上院 seat. A 最高の,を越す 上院 共和国の/共和党の strategist who spoke to The Associated 圧力(をかける) on 条件 of anonymity because the person isn't 権限を与えるd to discuss the 状況/情勢 said McConnell has called Pompeo several times, 促進するing the 上院 as a place where he could be 伴う/関わるd in big 問題/発行するs.

For 共和国の/共和党のs, 支持を得ようと努めるing 大統領 Donald Trump's 最高の,を越す 外交官 to run for 上院 茎・取り除くs in part out of 恐れる that a (人が)群がるd field could lead to the 指名/任命 of a more 意見の不一致を生じる Trump 同盟(する), Kris Kobach.

The former Kansas 長官 of 明言する/公表する and 支持する of 堅い 移民/移住 政策s lost the 知事's race last year to 民主党員 Laura Kelly. Some in the party are afraid he'll again tap a 保守的な base, 現れる from a (人が)群がるd 最初の/主要な, 疎遠にする 穏健な 投票者s and lose an さもなければ 安全な seat that 共和国の/共和党のs likely need to 持続する their 狭くする 上院 大多数.

"Pompeo getting into the race solves the problem," said David Kensinger, a GOP critic of Kobach and 助言者 to ex-Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer, who 辛うじて lost last year's 最初の/主要な to Kobach.

He is considered a shoo-in for the 指名/任命 because other 可能性のある GOP 希望に満ちたs such as Roger Marshall, a western Kansas 下院議員 who has $1.4 million in 選挙資金s for a possible run, have signaled they won't be 候補者s if Pompeo enters the field.

Buzz about Pompeo built again with the 告示 that he would speak Sept. 6 at Kansas 明言する/公表する University at a public 事件/事情/状勢s lecture series. The タイミング raised 期待s that Pompeo would make his 計画(する)s known before then, rather than let the guessing game 延長する into the 落ちる.

Sheila Burke, a former 長,指導者 of staff to former 上院 大多数 Leader (頭が)ひょいと動く 施し物, a Kansas 共和国の/共和党の, 定評のある that the 上院 is a "smaller universe" than the 長官 of 明言する/公表する's office and 申し込む/申し出s "いっそう少なく ability to 命令(する)." Bu t, she said, it does 供給する a 壇・綱領・公約 to 演説(する)/住所 important 問題/発行するs and Pompeo would have unique 専門的知識.

"It 許すs him an independence that he doesn't have as a 閣僚 長官, in some 尊敬(する)・点s," said Burke, now on the faculty of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of 政府.

At a 最近の Kansas event in Washington to celebrate University of Kansas basketball coach 法案 Self, Pompeo gave a speech that drew on his home-明言する/公表する 関係. And 共和国の/共和党のs also have seen the speech in 早期に September as another possible signal.

"Either マイク is 実験(する)ing the waters or he's just really messing with people 支援する here for fun," said Kelly Arnold, a former Kansas 共和国の/共和党の Party chairman. "A lot of these 寄贈者s are sitting on their checkbooks waiting to see what マイク does."

While Trump has proven to be a fickle boss and the 大統領,/社長's re-選挙 is far from a lock, Pompeo would be 熟視する/熟考するing leaving a 閣僚 地位,任命する with international visibility for a 上院 that has of late struggled to attract 明言する/公表するs' 最高の,を越す political talent.

"上院議員s want to be 長官 of 明言する/公表する," said (頭が)ひょいと動く Beatty, a Washburn University of Topeka political scientist.

There's also the question of Pompeo's own 大統領の aspirations, and which 職業 would be a better springboard. The Washington Examiner 報告(する)/憶測d in late July that he said he is open to running for 大統領,/社長 after Trump leaves office.

The scrum in Kansas began when four-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 GOP Sen. Pat Roberts 発表するd in January that he wouldn't 捜し出す reelection in 2020, but it's been left in 一時停止するd 活気/アニメーション by the 憶測 about whether Pompeo really has decided against running. Kobach and other 候補者s have jumped in and have been (選挙などの)運動をするing in his 影をつくる/尾行する.

Kansas 共和国の/共和党のs saw the 55-year-old Pompeo as a 未来 上院 候補者 before he left 議会 in 2017 to become Trump's 中央情報局 director and then 長官 of 明言する/公表する. He is a West Point 卒業生(する) with a Harvard 法律 degree, an Army 退役軍人 who built two 商売/仕事s and served on the 共和国の/共和党の 国家の 委員会.

Pompeo still has his U.S. House (選挙などの)運動をする 委員会, and it had nearly $1 million at the end of June that could be used for a 上院 race. That's a 重要な 量 to start with in an 安価な-マスコミ 明言する/公表する like Kansas,

共和国の/共和党のs worry they could 特に 直面する difficulty keeping the 上院 seat should Kathleen Sebelius, a former two-称する,呼ぶ/期間/用語 知事 who was 大統領 Barack Obama's Health and Human Services 長官, agree to run, though a 広報担当者 said Friday she is not thinking about it.

Besides Kobach, other 共和国の/共和党のs who have 開始する,打ち上げるd (選挙などの)運動をするs 含む Kansas 上院 大統領 Susan Wagle, 明言する/公表する Treasurer Jake LaTurner and Dave Lindstrom, a Kansas City-area 実業家 and former Kansas City 長,指導者s player.

In 新規加入 to Marshall, other 可能性のある GOP 候補者s 含む Alan Cobb, 大統領,/社長 and CEO of the Kansas 議会 of 商業, and Matt Schlapp, the American 保守的な Union's 大統領,/社長. Kansas 司法長官 Derek Schmidt also said he's still considering the race but might not decide until 早期に next year.

Wagle, Marshall, and Cobb have all said they wouldn't run against Pompeo. LaTurner said he would すぐに support Pompeo if Pompeo ran, 追加するing that with the とじ込み/提出するing 最終期限 in June, "権利 up to the last minute, he can decide to run."

Two 民主党員s, Barry Grissom, a former 連邦の 検察官,検事, and former Rep. Nancy Boyda, of northeast Kansas, have 開始する,打ち上げるd (選挙などの)運動をするs.

The GOP has won every U.S. 上院 race in Kansas since 1932, and 登録(する)d 共和国の/共和党のs より数が多い 民主党員s の中で the 明言する/公表する's 1.8 million 投票者s by more than 3-to-2. But the 2020 投票(する) will come two years after the GOP lost the 知事's office and a Kansas City-area congressional seat and had to work hard to 持つ/拘留する an eastern Kansas seat.

Ray Shinn, a real 広い地所 appraiser in 郡 GOP chairman in Nemaha 郡 in northeast Kansas - where Trump received more than 80 パーセント of the 投票(する) in 2016 - believes the higher 人出/投票者数 in presid ential race and a 殺到する in 投票(する)ing for Trump would give Kobach a better showing in a 上院 race. Kobach makes a 類似の argument.

"I don't see the 民主党員s winning the 上院 race," Shinn said.

Dalton Glasscock, the Sedgwick 郡 GOP chairman, doesn't either, but he said some fellow 共和国の/共和党のs in the Wichita area question Kobach's electability.

He said if Pompeo is the 指名された人, "We won't have to 焦点(を合わせる) on that race."
