Slingsby steers Aussies to $1 million SailGP victory

A 事柄 of 2? feet meant the difference between sailing off with $1 million in SailGP's 就任の 選手権 regatta or getting nothing.

Team Japan's Nathan Outteridge 賭事d and lost, 許すing 同国人 Tom Slingsby to steer Team Australia to victory Sunday in Marseille, フラン, in a 対決 between two of the world's best 船長/主将s 船内に 急速な/放蕩な, 失敗させる/負かすing F50 catamarans.

Slingsby overcame an error at the start and passed Outteridge in a tight 作戦行動 approaching the penultimate 示す to 勝利,勝つ one of the biggest prizes in sailing history.

"明白に it felt unbelievable," Slingsby said afterward. "It was just such a crazy day. We didn't know if there was going to be a race, we didn't know when it was going to happen, the circumstances. We're fortunate it went our way."

After a 延期する to let the 勝利,勝つd settle in and to 始める,決める the course, the race took just いっそう少なく than 10 minutes.

"I 港/避難所't 人物/姿/数字d out what I'm going to do with the $1 million," said Slingsby, an Olympic gold メダル受領者 who helped Oracle Team USA 勝利,勝つ the America's Cup in 2013. "I never want to jinx myself. I didn't want to 計画(する) to buy a new car and then never get the car if it didn't go my way. I've got something to think about in the next few days. The money will be divided throughout the team. Everyone will have a couple of good 決定/判定勝ち(する)s to make on what they want to spend their money on."

Slingsby steered his catamaran into the starting box a few seconds 早期に, 製図/抽選 a 刑罰,罰則 and 軍隊ing him to start just behind his friend and 競争相手 Outteridge, an Olympic gold and silver メダル受領者, and an America's Cup 退役軍人.

Outteridge tried to pinch off his 同国人 approaching the fourth gate, but Slingsby and his 乗組員 of four sailed just (疑いを)晴らす and 一連の会議、交渉/完成するd の上に the final 脚 ahead of Team Japan, which lost 速度(を上げる).

Race 分析 決定するd that the final duel (機の)カム 負かす/撃墜する to a mere 78 センチメートルs, or 2? feet. If the Australians had been five-hundredths of a second slower, Japan could have 軍隊d them to 背負い込む a 刑罰,罰則. It was a risky move by Japan in an 試みる/企てる to 軍隊 Australia off its course that backfired and 許すd Slingsby to take the lead.

"We thought we were on a 急速な/放蕩な layline, which is a better place to be," Slingsby said. "You've got a few more 選択s. When he went into his gybe, I knew he was a few seconds late. If he had went a few seconds earlier he would have been in a stronger position. I knew that opened the door わずかに and we had an 適切な時期. He was a little bit late in his luff and by that 行う/開催する/段階 we had our 屈服するs ahead.

"I knew we just had to keep (疑いを)晴らす when he luffed, which we did. As we bore away I knew we were in the (疑いを)晴らす and we just had to 持つ/拘留する の上に the lead. We finally made the 追いつく."

The Aussies won by 14 seconds and began a wild 祝賀, 含むing drinki ng シャンペン酒 out of the トロフィー.

"We made one error and that's what happens," Outteridge said. "You can't 勝利,勝つ everything and for every 勝利者 there is a loser. We knew someone was going to walk away unhappy. It's a shame it's us. But that's sport and we will just get ready for next season."

Slingsby and his experienced 乗組員 支配するd SailGP's first season. He (警官の)巡回区域,受持ち区域 Outteridge in the match-race 決勝戦 at the first two regattas, in Sydney and San Francisco. Outteridge 支配するd the New York stop, 含むing winning the match-race final against Slingsby. The last regatta, in Cowes, England, was 縮めるd to one day because of bad 天候, with the Australians winning all three (n)艦隊/(a)素早い races.

New Zealander Phil Robertson 船長/主将d 中国 to third place 全体にわたる, breaking a tie with Dylan Fletcher's British 乗組員. フラン was fifth and the 部隊d 明言する/公表するs sixth.

SailGP was created by New Zealander Russell Coutts, a five-time America's Cup 勝利者, and ソフトウェア 大君 Larry Ellison, whose Oracle Team USA won the America's Cup in 2010 and 2013 before losing it to 首長国s Team New Zealand in 2017.
