More 厳しく obese kids should get 外科, MD group says

Even some 厳しく obese preteens should be considered for 負わせる loss 外科, によれば new 推薦s.

The 指導/手引 問題/発行するd Sunday by the American 学院 of Pediatrics is based on a review of 医療の 証拠, 含むing several 熟考する/考慮するs showing that 外科 in teens can result in 示すd 負わせる loss 継続している at least several years, with few 複雑化s. In many 事例/患者s, 関係のある health problems 含むing 糖尿病 and high 血 圧力 消えるd after 外科.

While most of those 熟考する/考慮するs 伴う/関わるd teens, one 含むd children younger than 12 and 設立する no ill 影響s on growth, the 政策 says.

"安全な and 効果的な is the message here," said Dr. Sarah Armstrong, a Duke University pediatrics professor and the 政策's lead author.

Armstrong said children who have not gone through puberty may not be 円熟した enough to understand the life-changing 関わりあい/含蓄s of 外科 but that age alone shouldn't 支配する it out. She doesn't do 外科 but 作品 at a 中心 that 申し込む/申し出s it; the youngest 患者 was 14.

It's not a quick 直す/買収する,八百長をする, she said. "It's a lifelong 決定/判定勝ち(する) with 関わりあい/含蓄s every 選び出す/独身 day for the 残り/休憩(する) of your life."

This combination of undated photos provided by the family in October 2019 shows Faith Newsome before and after gastric bypass surgery. At 5 feet, 8 inches and 273 pounds, her BMI was almost 42 and she had high blood pressure and prediabetes when she had the procedure at age 16. After about a year, she'd shed 100 pounds and those health problems disappeared. She slimmed down enough to become active in sports, shop for prom dresses and gain a better self-image. But to avoid malnutrition she takes vitamins

Nearly 5 million U.S. children and teens are 厳しく obese, a 近づく 二塁打ing over 20 years. Many have already developed 関係のある health problems 含むing 糖尿病, high 血 圧力, sleep apnea and 肝臓 病気. But most kids don't get obesity 外科, おもに because most public and 私的な health 保険 doesn't cover it or they live far from 外科 中心s, Armstrong said. Costs can total at least $20,000.

抵抗 from pediatricians is another 障害. Many prefer "watchful waiting," or think 外科 is risky or will alter kids' growth. Some don't recommend 外科 because they think "負わせる is a personal 責任/義務 rather than a 医療の problem," the new 政策 明言する/公表するs.

Dr. Rebecca Carter, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of 薬/医学, said the new 推薦s give pediatricians better 指導/手引 about which 患者s should be referred and 評価するd.

最近の data show that pediatric obesity 外科 率s have 3倍になるd in almost 20 years but still 普通の/平均(する) より小数の than 2,000 操作/手術s each year.

The 学院's 推薦 say children and teens are 一般に 適格の for 外科 if their 団体/死体 集まり 索引 is 40 or higher, or at least 35 if they have 関係のある major health problems. These 基準 may 変化させる by gender and age, Armstrong said. They are 類似の to 基準 for 外科医s from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric 外科. A BMI of 30 and above is considered obese.

Now 21 and a 上級の at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Newsome is quick to answer whether she has 悔いるs.

"Never," she said. "Teens should be able to discuss every 選択 with their doctors, and 外科 should be one of those 選択s."
