OSWIECIM, Poland (AP) - On Jan. 27, 1945, the Soviet Red Army 解放するd the Auschwitz death (軍の)野営地,陣営 in German-占領するd Poland. The Germans had already fled 西方の, leaving behind the 団体/死体s of 囚人s who had been 発射 and thousands of sick and 餓死するing 生存者s.
The Soviet 軍隊/機動隊s also 設立する gas 議会s and crematoria that the Germans had blown up before 逃げるing in an 試みる/企てる to hide 証拠 of their 集まり 殺人,大当りs.
But the 集団殺戮 was too 大規模な to hide. Today, the 場所/位置 of Auschwitz-Birkenau 耐えるs as the 主要な symbol of the terror of the 大破壊/大虐殺. Its iconic status is such that every year it 登録(する)s a 記録,記録的な/記録する number of 訪問者s - 2.3 million last year alone.
On Monday - 75 years after its 解放 - hundreds of 生存者s from across the world will travel to Auschwitz for 公式の/役人 周年記念日 記念s. In 前進する of that, Associated 圧力(をかける) photographer Markus Schreiber visited the 場所/位置. Using a panoramic film camera, he 文書d the remains of the (軍の)野営地,陣営 in a 一連の haunting 黒人/ボイコット and white photos.
Auschwitz today is many things at once: an emblem of evil, a 場所/位置 of historical remembrance and a 広大な 共同墓地. It is a place where Jews make 巡礼の旅s to 支払う/賃金 尊敬の印 to ancestors whose ashes and bones remain part of the earth.
Auschwitz is in fact not one (軍の)野営地,陣営, but two: Auschwitz I, built in an abandoned ポーランドの(人) 軍の base, and Auschwitz II, or Birkenau, a much bigger コンビナート/複合体 that went up later about two miles (three kilomers) away to 促進する the Nazis' Final 解答.

The 鉄道 跡をつけるs from where hundreds of thousands of people were directed to the gas 議会s to be 殺人d, inside the former Nazi death (軍の)野営地,陣営 of Auschwitz Birkenau or Auschwitz II, in Oswiecim, Poland, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019. On January 27, 2020 _ 75 years after its 解放 _ hundreds of 生存者s from across the world will come 支援する to visit Auschwitz for the 公式の/役人 周年記念日 記念s. 早期に on, Auschwitz I operated as a (軍の)野営地,陣営 for ポーランドの(人) 囚人s, 含むing カトリック教徒 priests and members of the nation's 地下組織の 抵抗 again the German 占領/職業. Later in the war Birkenau was created for the 集まり 殺人,大当り of Jews and others who were 輸送(する)d there from across Europe.
囚人s arrived in cramped, windowless cattle trains. At the 悪名高い ramp at Auschwitz, the Nazis selected those they could use as 軍隊d 労働者s. The others - old people, many women and 特に children and babies, were ガス/無駄話d to death soon after their arrival.
It is Birkenau that shocks more profoundly, a flat, 広大な space still (犯罪の)一味d by the silver birch trees (Birken in German) that gave the place its 指名する. Crematoria 嘘(をつく) in がれき but still 損なわれていない are the rail 跡をつけるs and watchtowers and some of the 兵舎 where 刑務所,拘置所 ers slept in 冷淡な, cramped 条件s.
Schreiber's photos show the 悪名高い main gate with the 冷笑的な Nazi スローガン "Arbeit Macht Frei" - a German phrase meaning "work will 始める,決める you 解放する/自由な."
Today, 訪問者s can also see the スーツケースs, eyeglasses and other items they brought on their 旅行s. 特に haunting are the prosthetic 四肢s: Many of the Jews who were 殺人d had fought for their 母国s, 含むing Germany, in World War I.
At some parts of Auschwitz-Birkenau only dozens of brick chimneys remain on a 広大な field where once the 兵舎 for 抑留者s stood.
More than 1.1 million people were 殺人d by the Nazis and their henchmen in Auschwitz. Most who were killed were Jews, but the 犠牲者s also 含むd 政治家s, Roma, Soviet 囚人s of war, and others. In all, about 6 million European Jews died during the 大破壊/大虐殺. When the Soviets 解放するd the (軍の)野営地,陣営, they 設立する about 7,000 生存者s.
