BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - The 法律 school at the University of California, Berkeley has stripped itself of a 19th century namesake who espoused 人種差別主義者 見解(をとる)s that led to the 1882 Chinese 除外 行為/法令/行動する.

John Boalt's 指名する was 除去するd from a school building Thursday after a three-year 過程. University 公式の/役人s say this is the first time UC Berkeley has 除去するd a 施設's 指名する 予定 to the character or 活動/戦闘s of its namesake.

The 指名する 除去 comes as 会・原則s around the country re-査定する/(税金などを)課す the people 栄誉(を受ける)d with their monuments, streets and buildings. Last year, San Francisco 除去するd a statue long みなすd 人種差別主義者 by Native Americans.

"It´s incredibly important to 直面する 人種差別主義者 symbols, like John Boalt´s 指名する on a building, because these symbols 行為/法令/行動する to 増強する the history of white 最高位 in our 会・原則s," said Paul 罰金, a university professor and co-議長,司会を務める of the Building 指名する Review 委員会.

Oakland 弁護士/代理人/検事 John Henry Boalt was never a student or teacher at the 法律 school, but after he died in 1901, his 未亡人 Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt put up money to 建設する a Boalt 記念の Hall of 法律.

Students and alumni have long referred to themselves as Boalties and the 法律 school was casually referred to as Boalt Hall.

It wasn't until 2017 that 弁護士/代理人/検事 and UC Berkeley 法律 lecturer Charles Reichmann 設立する Boalt´s 人種差別主義者 writings and publicized them.

Boalt had moved to California from Nevada in the 1870s, at a time when Chinese 移民/移住 was rising to 会合,会う labor 需要・要求するs. And as 大統領,/社長 of the 影響力のある boys-only Bohemian Club, he 配達するd an 演説(する)/住所 in 1877 arguing t hat the Chinese could never assimilate and so should be 除去するd.
